Canton is a community of over 70,000 people, 14% of whom are seniors 65 years of age or older, located in the I-77 strip of communities south of Akron. Canton has several award-winning medical facilities and hospitals that accept Medicare, such as Mercy Medical Center, near Westbrook Veterans Memorial Park. According to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey, a semiprivate room in a Canton nursing home costs $6,540 a month, which is $1,216 a month less than the $7,756 national median.
Nursing care homes provide 24-hour medical care for seniors and people recovering from medical procedures. Common elements of nursing home care include skilled nursing services, medication assistance and coordination with residents’ personal doctors to provide therapy and rehab services. This can be an expensive option for many seniors. People with less intensive medical needs might prefer another living option, such as assisted living or home health care.
This guide covers the costs of these care types in more detail. It also has information on resources to help support seniors in Canton.

I was transfered to this facility from another nearby one and was there 20 days in November and eight days in Dec. of 2022. I was in my room alone which worked out for me very nicely and my great husband was there to visit me each and every day.
The whole staff took care of my needs not only with twice a day therapy to make me get stronger with Helen and Mary Jane helping along with others but meds also delivered right on time as I needed them for pain I was in sometimes by charming Taylor or by Cindy or others as everyone came in the room with smiles on their faces and made you feel like you were the most important person there.
Meals were delivered three times a day with a variety of choices available delivered by
Samantha, Rebecca and Joy that I remember but many staff members were in and out to remember all the names.
I also would like to mention Dr. Franz who also checked on me and how I was doing and always had a good and happy attitude .
Whenever most all of the staff would come in the room and see my husband there with me, they would offer him coffee which was nice.
As a plus also, if he had any questions of my situation or status, they were able to tell him as knew what was going on with me.
Melissa was also a help to my husband in answering any questions. I would definitely recommend this facility for needed help for your loved ones.

She’s doing very well with continues physical therapy and has regained most of the control in her arm. The employees take great care of her. She always looks well groomed and taken care of whenever we visit and we visit at varying times of the day/week. And she actually looks forward to her physical therapy and other activities where she can interact with other residents. This facility is always clean. And the employees are friendly and caring. It’s nice to know that there are some facilities that treat your family members as they would there own. My friend’s family couldn’t be happier with the care that her grandmother is receiving and the improvements in her overall health since she became a resident.

My sister was a patient at this facility from May -June 2021. She went to this facility for rehab following a stay at the hospital. The event that she fell in the bathroom after asking for help, was actually a blessing. So, for two weeks, my sister complained of severe back pain to nurses, aides, nurse practitioners, and the rounding doctor. None of them listened to her. She even complained her legs were becoming numb. Still, no one listened. She asked for help in the bathroom because she could not feel her legs. An aide assisted her and yet told her she shouldn’t need any help. My sister fell in the bathroom, and as the aide stood over her telling her to get up, my sister could not. EMS arrived and transported my sister back to the hospital. The following day they had to perform emergency surgery on her back d/t an infection that was eating her backbones. NICE PLACE.

My 90 year old grandma was sent here for 7-10 days of therapy to build strength after a 3 day hospitol stay. We explained IN detail at intake her med allergies and sensitivities. She did great for 7 days and was ready to come home. Then the nursing staff gave her a med she was allergic to and one we specifically told them to never give her. Twice she was given the med in 2 days, causing 3 hospitol visits in 4 days. Aultman then put her on a med she had a SEVERE reaction to previously. We begged the doctor at Woodlawn to take her off. He refused. 3 days later she was nonresponsive for the 4th time and taken to the hospitol. After 3 days of being off the med she was completely recovered and back to normal. Had she not been removed from Woodlawn she wouldn’t have survived the incompetent doctor and nursing staff.

My spouse is in the Windsor–nursing home section. This is probably a tough business because it is likely hard to retain good help due to the kind of work and the pay. While there is some turnover which impacts things, I have found that the Windsor has many dedicated people that truly care and love their residents. Unfortunately, COVID has made things tough on everyone (staff, residents, relatives, etc.). I have found that Windsor is doing about as good as expected considering the situation. There are various room sizes to choose from. My interaction with the staff is normally quite good and, depending upon staffing and COVID, there are activities that the residents enjoy.

I’m starting by telling you how appalled I am with the care given to the patient to whom I’m speaking of: First of all horribly understaffed. My major complaint is how unprofessional this place is ran. I witnessed meds being given that were the wrong dosage also med given that should have been discontinued. Meds were also never given on time and I don’t mean by a small margin either. Nurses and dr. communication was at times not understood between the two therefore added confusion to an already difficult situation. Nurses working very long hours come in stressed and making errors. The response times to getting needs met is egregious!! I am still horrified by the time it takes to get pads changed, meds or any other need met. The call button is joke they come in turn it off then leave for another half hr. How is it ever ok to over look MEDS being distributed WRONG not once or twice but almost daily. If not for family being present more times than not Lord knows what would’ve happened. Another thing how is it right to make human beings wait 30 to 40 minutes in their mess( not a random occurrence). No person should get taken care of with this neglect. People need to step up and make a difference. This is all for now but I do have more to say at a later date.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Canton, OH
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
