Located on the eastern tip of Long Island about 80 miles from Manhattan, Suffolk County is home to some of the area’s most iconic destinations, including Fire Island National Seashore, Sag Harbor and the Hamptons. With nearly 1.5 million residents, Suffolk is one of the state’s most populous counties. The area’s home to 255,000 senior citizens, and this number has increased dramatically in the past decade. Suffolk County’s growing senior population means there’s increasing demand for health care, nursing homes and other supportive services.
Seniors who require continuous medical monitoring or skilled rehabilitation following a surgery or hospital admission are ideal candidates for nursing homes. Individuals who need periodic assistance with daily tasks or someone to help with medications on a regular basis might consider moving into an assisted living facility or hiring a home health care provider instead. These services cost considerably less than skilled nursing, which averages around $12,395 per month.
If you’re looking for information about Suffolk County nursing homes, this guide details local providers, average prices and possible alternatives. We’ve also included a list of government agencies and nonprofit partners that can help with long-term care planning.

My father was at this facility for 24 hours. In that time he was there for rehab for a hip replacement and was a fall risk. In less than 24 hours he slipped off the bed and fell to the floor. He called and called and no one came. He dragged himself to the phone and called 911. They had no idea till the cops came and told them they got a call from my father he needed help. There are no guards or sensors to alert them for patients that are fall risks. Not even rubber mats. The ambulance came and assess my father. They told me he seemed fine and didn’t need to go to the hospital. He ended up being sent after I left for aspiration. I got so many different stories from the staff . My sister and I finally got matching stories from Jessica. They were trying to cover their a$$. They accused me of refusing to let my father go to the hospital. Why in hell would I do that? It was the EMS that decided not to take him. I went in for the report on what happened and they told me I couldn’t have it because my dad was not a patient there as of present and kept lying about what happened and how I refused to let the ambulance take him. I told them a dozen times I did not. EMS made the call. Shady AF. I wouldn’t let them take care of a house plant. BEWARE

I was a short term patient recovering from spinal fusion surgery. I was placed on the long term Dementia/Alzheimer’s 3rd floor when I should have been placed on the short term floor (1st floor)
I shared a room with an individual that screamed at night and followed my every move during the day – they finally after the 3rd day transferred me to a private room ( i have no idea who is paying for the private room I did not authorize it.
It takes 1 hour or longer before the respond to the call bells – they do not distribute the medications in a timely fashion I requested medication from the night nurse at 6:27 one day and she finally came at 8:50 – they changed my medication without my permission or my primary doctors permission which resulted in a bloody nose -when I told them of the bloody nose they disregarded it and walked away they substituted 10mg Rosuvastatin with 20mg Atorvastatin.
They would not adhere to the surgeons instructions on caring for the wound or changing the dressing – the surgeon had to fax written instructions before they would change the dressing properly
The 3rd floor either had a stomach virus infection or food poisoning – I questioned this and was told the only floor infected was the 3rd floor – I was affected by this issue and told several nurses – they did nothing for it and administered nothing to relieve the intense diarrhea and nausea – I asked for Imodium and anti nausea medication – after a full day of diarrhea I became extremely weakened and upon trying to get to the bathroom the call bell had been pressed with no response, I passed out and fell hitting a nearby chair causing nose damage at the bridge and again a serious nose bleed – I had been calling out for at least 45 minutes before someone heard my cries for help and discovered me laying in a pool of blood on the floor
They were supposed to take X-rays as per the house doctors instructions but never did
The Physical Therapy people are the only group that offer any type of care at all
Overall – I give this facility the absolute worst rating possible – for a short term resident it was horrible for any long term patient needing the most basic of care – IT IS NOT GIVEN !
there is no care given here

My mother-in-law moved into Maria Regina Residence Inc. several months ago. It’s a nursing home and so far, it’s been excellent. The staff all seem to be very friendly and caring, both towards the patients and toward the families.
The food is good. When she wears clothing, it is immediately washed, dried, and returned to her closet or her drawers. In terms of amenities, the COVID crisis has caused them to have to cut back on things like trips and visits and things that they might otherwise do, which I understand is going to be opening back up. For instance, they don’t eat in the dining hall, they eat in their rooms. They don’t go on trips, they stay sequestered. As a result, they haven’t had anyone test positive for COVID either in the patient population or among the staff in quite a while. It means that things ought to be opening up pretty soon. The things that they might otherwise do like art classes, things like that. They’re not doing that because they’re not putting people together yet.
They have beautiful grounds, a beautiful atrium, very nice surroundings, and the facility itself is all private rooms so each resident has his or her own room.
Because of the COVID regulations, I can’t just pop on over there. We hope that soon we’ll be able to schedule a visit on their online visit scheduling thing. It’s not as freewheeling as it might have been before COVID or may hopefully become very soon again.
My mother-in-law likes the food. It’s a Catholic facility so on no-meat days, they serve fish, which she does not like. So she talked to the dietician and said, she hates fish, doesn’t like fish, and she’s not going to eat the fish and they arranged to serve the other things that she enjoys eating on days when they go meatless. She might get, instead of fish, a tuna salad or she might get mac and cheese or peanut butter and jelly. Something that she’s going to like as opposed to something that she can’t stand.
I’ve had no complaints. Everybody is very responsive. If I call and want to talk to somebody to get right back to me, any requests that I’ve made, they’ve been responsive. Considering that it’s very hard to get good staff and they’re running on probably short-staffed through the COVID crisis, they’re doing very well.
The facility is very clean, very well maintained and they’re on top of it every day.
It’s expensive, but I think good care is. How can you put a price on that? The care here is very good.

They had a lot of activities prior to COVID, like they bring people in to sing songs and stuff like that. They had to shut down visiting because someone was tested positive. However, they can have window visits, and no other place has had that, that I know of. So you can still see your loved one and cheer them up a bit. The facility is way opposite the hospital, so it’s in a really good location too.

My mother stayed at this facility for 3 months after her stroke. For the most part the staff here is excellent. But since it is a for profit operation and they are very understaffed, and overworked. They in no way gave my mother any personal attention and every staff contact was a "Cameo" in and out. She had an iPad so I could see this on our 2x daily FaceTime connections. Every week they would make little mistakes that would be annoying and turn into big mistakes. She arrived there from Stony Brook hospital with a PEG feeding tube and Foley catheter. After a week or 2 she was eating 3 "hot" (cold) meals a day at which time they should have arranged for the PEG to be removed, they never did. The Foley catheter was also kept in so they had a easy (lazy) way to deal with her urination. This ultimately became an issue for us because she now has to relearn how to control her urination. The PT that she received was a short daily check the box routine. When we brought her home after 3 months he had almost 0 mobility. After 4 or 5 days at home we got her to about 30-40%. It was not in their best (financial) interest to get her mobile. The last straw was the staff not responding to a few emails regarding her progress as well as the removal of the 2 medical devices she was connected to. With her 100 day Medicare paid stay coming to an end it was an easy decision to have her discharged. The $480 daily rate that Acadia charges can easily offset/reduced by her living with her daughter and an health care professional aid coming in 5 hours/day. Not to mention far better PT and personal care.

My aunt has been in Carillon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. I found both times that they were quite attentive. With COVID now, they made a different set of rules for everything, so you won’t get the kind of attention that you originally did. But I would recommend Carillion because the staff was great and the care was good. It was well-staffed and they were very kind. I thought that the staff was well-informed and transparent. The food was just alright, she didn’t like the food too much because it wasn’t her usual diet. It was very clean and accessible, it was easy to move around the hallways, and the rooms were big. They’re not overly-expensive but it’s not cheap either; what you ask for is just what you pay for.

Berkshire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is more suited to my father. He requires nursing home care, and the staff is doing a good job. They’re helping him with his needs. I don’t have any complaints. The nurse comes into his room because he has to be handfed. There were a couple of incidences where he had to have boots on his feet, and they weren’t there. Otherwise, they’re very careful and they’re very safe. They’re taking care of him, and they work very hard. It’s not as pretty as the other facilities, but it’s not bad. It’s more of a nursing home, and it’s very reasonable.

Otherwise, they’re very careful and they’re very safe. They’re taking care of him, and they work very hard. It’s not as pretty as the other facilities, but it’s not bad. It’s more of a nursing home, and it’s very reasonable.

My dad was at Medford Multicare Center. I would not recommend them. On the weekends, when we went, my father was locked in a wheelchair in a dirty diaper. I was trying to change him myself, and I couldn’t even find a staff member to help me. Overall, I don’t want to send my dad back there. I like the physical therapist there. The food is bad. The building itself was OK, and it was clean. My dad has Medicare and supplement Cigna. I’m not impressed with them all.

My dad is in Quantum Rehabilitation and Nursing. They seem very friendly and caring. When I push my dad around the nursing home, everybody knows his name and says hi. They read stories to the patients. They have a movie night, bingo, a big rehab facility downstairs, and an in-house bakery. The patients and their families could go down and get coffee or sugar-free for people with diabetes, and it’s all free. I saw the food, and it was very good. They give the meals and choice of a menu. They did a patio party outside for the staff. The facility was clean.

Number one on my list is the cleanliness and brightness of this facility. My Mom moved there December 2010, and shares a room with a lovely woman .
The wait time after Mom was put on the list, was about 5 months. We were welcome at any time to visit the Hamlet, and speak with the other residents, as we waited. Mom was royally welcomed by some of the ladies she met before she even moved in.
The floors are washed and swept frequently, the rooms and baths are cleaned daily. Beds are made, laundry is done, and delicious meals are served 3 times a day. Snacks and beverages are always available. There is a hair salon, and Resident Doctors and Nurses take care of medical issues. Medication is given out individually by the nurses.
There are many activities during the day, bus trips, a movie room, and volunteers come in once a week to do manicures for the gals. A certified dog viists every week for the folks to pet and gush over. He is sweet.
Musicians, Clergy, are there to speak to the residents and entertain them.
The staff is superb, very caring, well trained and polite to everyone.
Mom is there with Medicaid, thank goodness. However, many other folks have larger rooms and choose to pay their way. Fees start at 3 to 5 thousand a month. In house Banking is provided, for all. Social
workers, Psychologists, Podiatrist, and Physical Therapy is available to all.
The admimistration and front desk personnel are always polite and ready to help or answer any questions family may have. I give this facility a High Five. Excellent…

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Suffolk County, New York
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
