Dotted with historic buildings and steeped in culture, Albuquerque is an ideal location for sunshine-loving seniors who prefer suburban life. Adults over the age of 60 make up 22.6% of the population, so there are plenty of thriving senior living communities to choose from. The UNM School of Medicine is home to the UNM Senior Health Center, which is dedicated to supporting individuals over age 70 who are frail or require memory care. It also runs the UNM Center on Aging, which aims to strengthen senior health care services across the entire state.
The function of nursing care is to provide a level of support suitable for people who are no longer able to get the care they need in their own home without help. A semiprivate room in a nursing home costs $8,330 on average, which is high compared to the national median of $7,756. Individuals who don’t require skilled nursing care around the clock might find assisted living or home health care more affordable and appropriate for their needs.
Read on to explore senior care costs in more detail and find out about some local resources for older adults in Albuquerque.

I was at La Vida Llena as an invited guest. The facility is new and very beautiful. The location is also very good. It just opened this year. It would definitely be my choice, but it’s expensive. I would highly recommend this place if you had the money. We looked at the apartments and they were nice. We had a light lunch there with a salad and a dessert and it was okay. We were nicely treated by the staff. They were knowledgeable and all our questions were answered. They have different things going on like movies, games, and if I remember correctly they go to different places.

My wife was at Skies Nursing Home, which was a horrible experience. She came home, but they never set up the home assistance or home health things for us. After five days of getting no services, she had to go back to the hospital.
The facility was sort of junky. 50% of the reason my wife is still in a nursing home is due to the treatment she got at Skies. They just didn’t do their job. The staff members were rude and not dependable. They didn’t seem to take the responsibility of caregiving seriously and it was as if they were just concerned about a paycheck.
My wife never really complained about the food. I never saw anything other than the front lobby, but it didn’t have the class or the appeal that the other facility has. It looked like some kind of nursing home that was built about 30 to 40 years ago.

I stayed in a rehab center called Advanced Health Care of Albuquerque, and it was wonderful. They’re just for rehab even though they have 40 rooms. It was outstanding. The room was spacious. It had a large armoire, it had a good-sized TV for being in the room so much, and it had a little efficiency sort of kitchen with a counter, a sink, a mini-fridge and a microwave like you would find in some hotels or motels, and I like that a lot. They had a gym, they had a doctor, they had two nurses, and they had quite a few what they call certified nurse assistants, where if you would call them for help with anything, they would be there in a short time.
They have excellent food, three meals a day. They would wheel you in if you needed to be in a wheelchair with oxygen if you needed that, and/or they would deliver the meal to your room for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They had a main meal that was changed every day, but you could also have a choice of other things that were always on the menu. Like if you want a hamburger and French fries, they had other things on the menu besides whatever the special meal of the day was. I went there on Medicare and insurance, but I understand that when that runs out, it’s $6000 a month. But the one I looked at yesterday, a three-bedroom-two-bath house with a couple of items of gym equipment and a living room, they wanted $5000, no private bath, so I would say, compared to that, it’s got a much better value.

The staff is very friendly, wonderful, and very accommodating. The nurses and the staff have been here for a while, and they’re wonderful. We have some traveling nurses, and I got to know a few of them. They’re very understaffed at times, so there’s a need for nursing and CNAs out here badly. The ones that are here work really hard and sometimes long hours.
The food is amazing. Most of it’s homecooked, and it’s very good. We chose it because it was centrally located for my family. It was in a good area.

I asked attendants to ask my father once an hour if he needed to urinate. He is deaf and can’t understand buzzing nurse’s station. No one asked him so he basically held his urine for hours. When I visited several times I tried buzzing the nurses station dnd got no response. Nurses were glued to their phones at their stations; even when I went up to them I was ignored.
I wouldn’t put my worst enemy in this place.

Wonderful facility, very clean, nicely updated on both the interior and exterior! Tiffany helped place my family member, arranged a private, very updated and modern room and did an excellent job. At times my family member can be somewhat demanding and want immediate attention but the nursing staff were patient and made sure all of our needs were met. My only suggestion would be to increase the security factor at the front door. Again, my greatest compliments to Tiffany and the staff at St. Theresa’s!

I don’t think they’re not as attentive to their patients or their cleanliness as the other place was. The food was OK. They need to improve on emptying the trash and their cleanliness. It smelled like urine really bad in there when you walk into the doors, the hallways, and the rooms. They need better circulation. They need to be dumping their trash more often, changing their patients more often, and stuff like that. The smell was pretty bad. I went to visit a lady that was my mom’s roommate and I noticed that the place got better. There were some good caring nurses there.

If there is one word I could use to describe my “care” at this facility it would be “neglectful.” From basic nursing care, nurses aide’s duties to dietary, my experience was one of frustration due to lack of communication and real worry due to tardiness of needed services. I cannot comment on the physical and occupational therapy (as I only needed wound care and IV treatment), and some of the staff were friendly. Overall the facility is both understaffed and staffed with marginally qualified people. During my week-plus at this facility, I was never given the opportunity to shower, meals were routinely marginal and miniature, my wound care was often neglected and my nurses aide’s essentially did nothing to help me except take vital signs once daily. My medications were given correctly and on time. If you can help it, I would avoid being transferred to this facility as it just isn’t a good experience from a patient perspective.

My mother had all her faculties so when she didn’t know who I was and was slurring her words, I became alarmed. I told the nurse she was not some old person who had lost her memory and that it was very out of character for her. I had to feed her because she couldn’t even feed herself. It took me hanging out for long periods of time to get to talk with the Dr. on call. Once I explained my mother was not normally this way, he adjusted her pain medications. Come to find out her liver was not processing pain medicine like most and it lingered in her system longer then usual. Once her pain medicine was adjusted, she was my same old mother again!

The food is absolutely terrible. Some nurses were very kind and nice, others were not. The rehab was suppose to happen twice daily and most times it did not. Would never allow my mother to go to this facility again.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Albuquerque, New Mexico
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
