"My brother in law spent over two months at this facility in hospice care. He received the most compassionate and timely care we could ever have expected. The staff was unfailingly patient and compassionate. We visited often and found the facility to be consistently clean and everything in good repair. My brother in law had only one incident in which he fell out of bed but thanks to safety precautions and watchful staff he did not sustain serious injuries. We were called immediately. I cannot speak to the food as he quickly became too ill to eat. When we couldn’t be there every day staff attempted to feed him and offer water. They kept us updated almost every day. We appreciated such wonderful end of life care for my brother in law. "

"Bryn Mawr Health Care is fine, but it's just too far for me to drive. I would like to get my sister closer to where I live, because I have to take her to the doctor to downtown Minneapolis and things like that. I'm 50 miles away from her. She's been in there since December and she's being treated very good. The staff seems to be knowledgeable, very caring to whatever she needs. It's very clean. They have a lot of things going on, they take them places, and they do a lot of things in the facility itself. So she has a lot to do, if she wants to do it. She's not forced and it's up to her. She's never really complained about anything. It's a fairly nice area, but it's just so far from me. "

"My friend is in a nursing home now. She is at Jones Harrison. They have courtyard visits. Right now I cannot see her, but I was for a while. She was in the rehab/physical therapy type thing because she had surgery. She may be moving into long-term care now. It's excellent. She has gotten excellent care. The staff have been wonderful to her. They have been very helpful when I call them. They have been very good. The staff seem to be fine. Everybody has been very responsive to my questions, but I haven't been inside to be able to interact with their staff. They gave me all their phone numbers right off the bat. They sent me an email with all of their names, phone numbers, etc., so that was very nice."

"My father has been at Golden Living Center since August of this year. He was placed here just kind of out of urgency. He was hospitalized and needed a place to go, and we found this facility. I haven't been impressed with it. The staff ratio is too low, and they are not very attentive. They're short staffed, and they're just constantly putting out fires rather than being proactive in the assistance that they provide each resident. I don't think that the care plans are individualized based on my experience. It is not clean, and it smelled like urine. They don't clean up their eating area even two or three hours after dinner service. My father's roommate is not capable of walking around or even go to the bathroom by himself, and it had been hours before he had been changed after soiling himself. The room sizes are small, dirty, old, looked worn down, and the paint is chipping off the walls. They don't follow up with his personal hygiene needs. I suggest that they implement a consistent plan for updating and informing family members on the progress of the residents. Progress reports would be great. They should improve on the cleanliness of the facility and upgrading the rooms. "

"The rooms were clean, and the food served is a well balanced meal for the residents. My mom was placed in the Treatment Care Unit at Sholom Homes. I am really impressed with the staff. The nurses, aides, and administration staff are very caring, compassionate with the residents. The administrations staff (Paula) work on placing my mom in hospice so quickly, and communicated all the info in a timely manner. I knew my mom was in good hands."

"My brother recently entered Northridge with some very challenging needs. The level of skill, care and attention received exceeds expectations. While the facility may be a bit dated, it is clean, comfortable and there is a fair bit of activity going on..... residents seem happy. The staff works as a cohesive team, the front desk is helpful, there are good safety protocols in place and, the food presentation and quality is surprisingly good. Our famiy is very pleased with our experience at Northridge."

"We got my mother placed in Catholic Eldercare on Main. I would recommend it. So far, it has been very nice. Everyone is very helpful and very friendly, and they seem to take a lot of care about what they're doing. They are very, very helpful all the way around for everyone. They have therapy and all the usual stuff. The place is well run as far as I can tell. I remember seeing places that my wife's parents were in and they were very nice, too, but not like this one. My mother is basically in nursing care. She is sharing a room with another woman. The staff are extremely helpful, very pleasant, and always as competent as possible in taking care of business. I haven't tried the food, but my mother seems to be eating properly and fine, and that's all I care about. They do a good job at keeping the place clean and on top of things. They have activities. My mother doesn't partake in them, but I've seen volunteers come in and do a little Nerf bowling with some of the patients. They have musical ones, and my mother happened to see one activity where they brought some llamas in. One thing is that they go to medical assistance when needed, so it's not all private pay and we don't have to move her again, so that's a consideration there. Financially, it's much better to go there. It is a nice place. "

"We looked at the Bryant Square Apartments, near the park of the same name in South Minneapolis, because of its convenient location. Most of my great grandmother's family lives near the area, so it would be easy to visit her. We have always loved visiting nearby Lake Calhoun and all have many fond memories there. The foyer of the main entrance to the office was nicely decorated and felt warm. The options they had included a small home, an apartment or a single room and all were very nicely decorated. The bathrooms were larger than most we've seen and easy to navigate with grab bars. Our great-grandmother really liked the temperature controls, as she tends to like to adjust that herself, often changing it during the day. We were told that she could have some of her cherished personal furniture there and it seems like there is adequate room for it. For example, we gave her a small occasional table that she would like to keep with her. The kitchenette was nicely equipped and it was easy to reach the cabinets. We also liked that some of the units are large enough to suit two people, as our great aunt may decide to either live with her at some point or visit frequently over night. The family appreciated the cable and Internet service hook-ups, which is convenient for those of us who need to check in at work. Some of our family run small businesses and this will make it easy to have a carefree, extended stay. Our great grandmother really likes to have her family around as much as possible. So this convenience will give us that opportunity. The caregivers all seemed very friendly and genuinely interested in helping their residents. This is also very important to us. Their social services department includes financial assistance, which is also very convenient. Our great grandmother's only issues are ambulatory ones "“ she uses a walker. The spaces are all easy to navigate and the outdoor facilities are really lovely. She loves to get outside each day and could easily do this here, weather permitting. For those times when it is hard to get out on her own, there are plenty of activities to occupy her sufficiently - both inside and at other places. The formal dining room offered us a choice of lunch which was as good as anything we've eaten in a nice, casual restaurant. Our great grandmother has very simple tastes, and it looks like she will be offered the foods that she likes best. We were able to eat in the semi-private casual dining room and found it to be more private than many we've seen. Our great-grandmother really enjoyed the fireplace and library. They also have an arts and crafts and music room. The facility also shows films weekly for residents and has a video library where they can choose their own films to watch. Overall, we really liked this facility and could see that the residents are happy and well cared for. "

"My father was in rehab of Golden LivingCenter-Chateau for a couple of months. The staff was extremely helpful. They made sure they engaged him as much as possible, even if he was uncooperative. They're very open with the family and keep us up to date. But, if there is anything negative to say, they only do peer conferences once a quarter and sometimes it's not often enough, there's some missing information. My father, in some instances, didn't care about the food, but it was OK. They do offer to allow food to be delivered to them. It's fairly large; they're cooking for a number of people. They could improve the communication with the family about the type of care they provide. But overall, we had a very positive experience. I would definitely recommend it. It served its purpose of what my father needed. "

"I have been very happy with the staff here. All staff seem to know all residents by name and almost always address them by name just in passing. And many of them will give me a quick update on something my dad has done or said, even if they are with the kitchen staff. It is always clean. And has a good atmosphere, with plenty of activitys for those who want to participate. "

"Benedictine Innsbruck repeatedly demanded payment for my mother's room fee while not assisting in billing her insurance company. And their recommendation for my mom's discharge date seems to have been influenced by their self-interest. My mother incurred a $665 private room fee ($35 per day) for her 19-day stay in transitional care late last year, which Medicare doesn't cover. On discharge day, I informed the nursing home's business office manager of United Healthcare's intention to cover the entire cost, and asked her to bill them. -She resisted my request repeatedly, insisting incorrectly that no insurer would pay the charge. As a result of her inaction, I was left to spend 13 cumulative hours working with United to process the claim, effectively doing Benedictine's work. -While refusing to cooperate, Benedictine demanded on eight separate occasions, spanning less than two months, that my mother pay the $665 fee. -I escalated this matter three times, first to the nursing home's administrator, then to the organization's vp of operations and finally to its new president, the highest-ranking member of the organization. In almost a dozen combined e-mail responses (which I have kept to validate my claim), no one ever apologized for their employees' actions, or EVEN addressed the substance of my concerns. -Instead, the new president actually blamed me, claiming absurdly that I tried to "bully" him to "cave in to my pronouncements." -The new president claimed that he considered the matter to be resolved, while stating in the same e-mail that he would review the matter. In the two months since, I have received no further communication from Benedictine about their "review." In unrelated matter, when my mother and family met with clinic staff in weekly conference, they told her us she was doing well and could go home - exactly eight days later. They added that even if she improved significantly in the interim, they still advised the long-range discharge date. The target date happened to be on a Friday when the clinic is fully staffed and on my mother's nineteenth day at facility. Notably, Medicare covers 100% of costs (excluding room fees) for first twenty days. Given that information, it seems reasonable to conclude that Benedictine's self-interest influenced its recommendation. "
