One half of Minnesota’s Twin Cities, Minneapolis is the largest city in the state with an estimated 429,606 residents, approximately 42,960 of whom are seniors over the age of 65. The city’s older adults benefit from having access to 61% more physicians per capita than the United State’s average and an impressive healthcare network which includes a Mayo Clinic orthopedic hospital and the University of Minnesota Medical Center. Abbott Northwestern Hospital, which is nationally ranked in two adult specialties, is also located in the city.
After hospitals, nursing facilities offer the most extensive slate of healthcare services in the city. In addition to personal care and meals, nursing homes provide 24-hour supervision and specialized services such as diabetes monitoring, intravenous therapy and wound care. In Minneapolis, seniors pay an average of $11,285 a month for nursing home care, which is more than the state and national medians. Considering the financial expense, seniors may find it prudent to see if home health care or assisted living will adequately meet their needs.
This guide covers the costs of nursing home care in Minneapolis and lists a few resources seniors can use to pay for care and reduce their living expenses.

My father is in Walker Methodist Health Center, and it looks clean. They’re woefully understaffed and I have nothing against any immigrants coming here, but a lot of times the language barrier is there, and that’s tough.
He’s in there for physical therapy, so they’ve been helping him with physical therapy, but he’s reluctant to do much of it, so it’s just not going well. Everybody I talked to there seemed good and they were all nice people. But, when I would call and stuff, I had a problem getting through because of the language barrier. And then I think I think everybody is short-staffed and we just need more people working there, and these people certainly need to be paid more money.
They seem to park everybody in a circle so one person can watch them in front of the TV because of the short staffing, and then sometimes somebody will come in and play the piano, which is very nice. I think all the residents appreciate that.
I think you pay a lot of money and unfortunately, it doesn’t go to the right places. It goes right to the top and unfortunately, the elderly suffers.

I was a patient at Jones Harrison last March, after having a second Spinal Fusion.
I had been there three years before, for the same reason and it was 5* in every area.
This time I had a completely different experience. Young nurses who wanted to be your buddies, only to talk trash about you with other staff members, which I could unfortunately hear. A nurse’s aide who deliberately kept me awake at night. I will never know why. I felt I had a target on my back and spent much of my 16 days there crying. The food was inedible-nurses agreed.
With that being said, the physical and occupational therapy was outstanding, and I would be remiss if I left out one or two nurses who were professional, followed through, and were beyond kind.
So, go there for terrific therapy, but be prepared to lose weight, sleep in your urine, and just put your self-esteem and self-worth on a shelf. Pick it up when you leave and don’t look back.
Oh, and the rooms are lovely. Just make sure you sign no papers while under the influence of narcotics. You will be sorry.

She has certain dietary needs, so I’ve talked to the dietitian, and that is what she’s getting now. Mostly, the food is very good. We like it for our mom. She gets her hair cut and washed there. The lady does it exactly as my mom wants it. She’s very prompt as my mom always wants it at 9:30. They have a chapel, which my mom wouldn’t use. She likes the hospice reverend. He’s very kind and very good to my mom. The place has absolutely no smell. She feels very comfortable there.

The caring staff made all the difference for my mother for the years she was there. The food was good and the room comfortable, quiet, and kept clean. The housekeepers, nurses, aides, social worker, activities persons, and maintenance man all knew how she was doing when I came to visit. An example of their extra care would be the activities persons going to her room to visit her because she was not up to attending group activities. Those that took care of her laundry always knew if she needed more shirts or socks. The nurses and aides knew how to position her to make her more comfortable. As her diet needs changed, the cook fixed food she could eat. So many nice things were done by so many for my mom. I am so thankful.

Mt. Oliver was extremely understaffed. Their staff did not know how to provide water or medication to my father when he was incoherent. He would ring for help and be left for hours without getting the attention he needed. They were generally friendly, but that is not enough.
His room was very dirty all the time. His air conditioner wasn’t working and no one ever noticed. I had to make several requests before it was fixed.
The food quality was poor.
When he died they gave me 24 hours to remove all of his belongings. How is a relative supposed to do that while they’re still processing a family members death.
Please don’t use this facility.

She told me about the place and explained that my wife may need more care than they can give. Melanie had an Amber call me from her establishment. Amber came right to the hospital to see my wife and I. Amber spent two hours with my wife and I talking about my wife’s wishes. She gave us ample information and we felt more confident in our decision to keep her home with some extra help. Amber helped coordinate hospice for my wife. Amber recognized my wife was failing and recommended hospice. I am happy I called Melanie and Amber. I would highly recommend anyone call this place when you need help. They sure know what they are talking about.

The floor she was on had a stench of urine. She shared a room with another resident that she didn’t get along with and somehow her dentures were lost.It was a horrible experience for my grandmother as well as the rest of my family. And it was almost impossible to re-place her in another facility because we had such strong complaints about previous. Not many other facilities wanted a family that was going to be so assertive about the way residents are cared for. Overall after visiting a few other homes I found that the first two floors are always the nicest and those are the ones that a family gets to tour.

I had the opportunity to visit this facility many times during the years my sister lived there. In the beginning it was like family. The staff was amazing and they cared deeply for my sister and the other residents. Then after Bryn Mawr was sold and taken over by the current owner I noticed a sharp decline in the cleanliness and quality of care, and many of the beloved caregivers had left.
During one of my first visits after the facility changed hands my sister had an accident in the hall, but no one cleaned it up. The next day when I returned the same dried urine was still there. And the next day, too. This is just one of many examples of the dreadful conditions I witnessed inside Bryn Mawr after that. It was never like this before. In the past my sister and everyone was cared for with dignity and love.
Amid lots of empty promises about all the great improvements they were going to make under the new ownership such as remodeling and upgrades, reorganization and new this and new that, nothing was done and the place just got worse every year. Not only had the aging building become more run-down, the stench got so bad it made my eyes water.
Because we did not want to move our sister after living there for years, I spoke up and tried to make a difference. I asked for regular cleaning and for some of the improvements that were promised and that would have made my sister’s situation there tenable. Many of the staff were receptive and did what they could. However the upper management was not receptive or amiable after that.
It was a sad day when Bryn Mawr was sold because the new owners did not provide the consistency of caring, and the stability our sister needed from her long-term care, and that our family appreciated for so many years.

Benedictine Innsbruck repeatedly demanded payment for my mother’s room fee while not assisting in billing her insurance company. And their recommendation for my mom’s discharge date seems to have been influenced by their self-interest.
My mother incurred a $665 private room fee ($35 per day) for her 19-day stay in transitional care late last year, which Medicare doesn’t cover. On discharge day, I informed the nursing home’s business office manager of United Healthcare’s intention to cover the entire cost, and asked her to bill them.
-She resisted my request repeatedly, insisting incorrectly that no insurer would pay the charge. As a result of her inaction, I was left to spend 13 cumulative hours working with United to process the claim, effectively doing Benedictine’s work.
-While refusing to cooperate, Benedictine demanded on eight separate occasions, spanning less than two months, that my mother pay the $665 fee.
-I escalated this matter three times, first to the nursing home’s administrator, then to the organization’s vp of operations and finally to its new president, the highest-ranking member of the organization. In almost a dozen combined e-mail responses (which I have kept to validate my claim), no one ever apologized for their employees’ actions, or EVEN addressed the substance of my concerns.
-Instead, the new president actually blamed me, claiming absurdly that I tried to "bully" him to "cave in to my pronouncements."
-The new president claimed that he considered the matter to be resolved, while stating in the same e-mail that he would review the matter. In the two months since, I have received no further communication from Benedictine about their "review."
In unrelated matter, when my mother and family met with clinic staff in weekly conference, they told her us she was doing well and could go home – exactly eight days later. They added that even if she improved significantly in the interim, they still advised the long-range discharge date.
The target date happened to be on a Friday when the clinic is fully staffed and on my mother’s nineteenth day at facility. Notably, Medicare covers 100% of costs (excluding room fees) for first twenty days. Given that information, it seems reasonable to conclude that Benedictine’s self-interest influenced its recommendation.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
