Minneapolis is one of the Twin Cities of Minnesota and it is situated on the Mississippi River across from its neighbor, Saint Paul. The city is the ideal place to retire for those who love exploring the outdoors, watching live sporting events and shopping in the Mall of America. Seniors need to enjoy the cold to be able to retire in Minneapolis as the winters tend to be long and snowy while summers are warm and rainy. The population of Minneapolis is 429,606, and 9.5% of residents are over the age of 65.
Minneapolis offers a number of quality home care programs to its senior community. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2019, the average cost of homemaker services is $5,815 per month and the average cost of home health aide services is $6,244. Both of these services cost more in Minneapolis than the national average, which is $4,290 for homemaker services and $4,385 for home health aide services.
At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Minneapolis area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

We have Home Instead – Andover, MN help for my mom. A home health aide comes in four hours a day, three times a week. We’ve been using them since June or July of last year. They were one of the ones when we started calling around that did a home health aide without having the extra-occupational therapist and physical therapists. We could just do the home health aide part of it. The caregiver is very professional, very capable, and respectful. It’s an automatic billing twice a month, so it’s been working fine for us. They help in daily bathing, minor exercises, doing craft activities with her, and during the summer, taking her outside, sort of daily companionship.

He also helped me with a few domestic chores – gets a gold star for laundry folding! To a person, the other staff were not only competent, but caring and responsive as well. The mechanics of coordinating invoicing and reimbursement with our insurance company also went very smoothly. For seven months, Home Instead was a mainstay!

On 02/01/22 I was informed by my ward’s social worker that she had started service with Always Best Care (ABC). It took a while, but ABC finally scheduled and intake appointment for 02/25/22. Unfortunately, Brooke didn’t show up for the appointment and didn’t answer her phone. Later that day she finally called me back and said that she lives over 80 miles away in New Ulm MN and didn’t feel like driving in since my ward hadn’t answered the phone. She was rather nasty about it. Note: I was listed as the contact point because my ward has dementia and only uses the phone on a very limited basis. The appointment was rescheduled for 03/08/22. On 03/18/22 Rachel from ABC called to ask me how their services were going the last few months. She was clueless to the fact that services had no yet started. Service was finally started on 04/05/22. There were numerous cancellations and some of the work done had to be redone. On 04/27/22 Brooke called for a 45 day review. I had to remind her that the services only started 22 days ago. On 05/10/22 and 05/11/22 Emily, the service provider, didn’t show up and didn’t answer her phone. On 05/11/22 Stacy at ABC said that Emily would no longer be coming due to “personal reasons”. She also said that they had informed the social worker. When I talked to the social worker, she said that she had not been contacted by ABC and didn’t know anything about the situation. There was no attempt by ABC to tell us what was going on or to replace Emily until 06/01/22 when Brian from ABC called. At that point I simply told him that ABC was no longer welcome. Yesterday on 06/26/22 Rachel from ABC called again to ask me how their services were going. She had absolutely no clue as to what was going on and that ABC had stopped all services as of 05/05/22. In frustration she said that the internal ABC communications was nearly nonexistent. In my opinion Always Best Care is a poorly run one star company.

Right at Home provides in-home caregiving services for thousands of families across the nation. We offer companionship and help with everyday tasks that have become challenging for an aging person. This may include things like meal preparation, laundry, housekeeping, hygiene and grooming. We also offer services for those with special care situations caused by numerous medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Call us to learn more about the specific services we provide.
Custom Care Plan
From the moment you call, we begin considering the specific needs of your loved one. We ask questions during the initial call or meeting to form a basic needs assessment. After discussing your particular situation, we will prepare an initial Custom Care Plan and then work with you to fine tune that Care Plan based on your loved one’s specific needs. Once the plan is agreed upon, your local Right at Home team matches the right caregiver to implement the plan.
Caregiver Training and Care Supervision
Every Right at Home caregiver goes through an extensive interview process, including background checks. Once hired, caregivers are trained through Right at Home University to ensure that they’re able to deliver the care set out in your loved one’s Custom Care Plan. Before providing care, they’re bonded and insured.

We have had Joyful Companions (JC) help with our Dad for 3 years, and have had two different Companions involved with Dad. They visited him at home before he moved into an assisted living, and one stayed with him for the full year that he was there. Now he is at home with 24 hour care with another agency, and the Companion who saw him at home before his move, is still seeing him once a week, again at his home. She gives the full-time caregiver a break by being with Dad for 3 hours at a time. It is great for Dad to have a friend who is has known him throughout the changes that he has been through in the last three years. She has been whatever support he has needed by a companion and has stuck with him through all the changes he has experienced. The social worker and office staff at JC are lovely and they care about Dad, too. We are grateful that JC exists, and that it’s affordable. I feel relaxed knowing that his Companion is there for him every week.

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Minneapolis:

Metro Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization that delivers hot meals to homebound seniors throughout the Minneapolis area. Meals are delivered by volunteers around midday each day from Monday to Friday. Weekly meal packs and weekend meals are also available for those that require them. All meals are packaged in microwaveable containers to make heating the meal as easy as possible. The drivers will report to staff members if a senior does not answer the door or if something seems amiss and the relevant authorities or family members will be contacted. There is a small charge for each meal, but financial aid is available to those who cannot afford to pay.

The Minnesota Weatherization Assistance Program is a federal and state-funded program that provides free home energy upgrades to low-income households in the city of Minneapolis. Priority is given to senior citizens and households with children under the age of 12. The services provided help the residents to save energy and make the home a safe and healthy place to be. A home energy assessment is carried out on eligible properties to determine if energy efficiency improvements will reduce the household energy bills. Potential upgrade services include wall and attic insulation, water heater and furnace repairs and replacements and air leakage reduction.

Senior Community Services is a nonprofit organization that assists seniors in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul area. A team of volunteers and staff members provides a range of services to help seniors to be able to independently live in their own homes for a longer period of time. Some of the chores carried out by the program include light housekeeping, minor repairs to homes, lawn mowing, snow removal, painting, fall raking and home safety additions. Chores are either performed on a one-off basis or they can be on a regular schedule to ensure the seniors get the assistance they need. Fees are charged on a sliding scale depending on the senior’s income and ability to pay.
