East Longmeadow is a peaceful town in Hampden County that’s only 10 minutes from downtown Springfield and 30 minutes from Hartford, Connecticut. Around 21.7% of its 16,430 residents are aged 65 and older, a figure well above the national average of 16.5%. The town’s below-average nursing home costs, $11,568 for a semiprivate room, may factor in why so many seniors choose to call it home. The abundance of high-quality medical facilities within easy reach may also be a cause. Baystate Medical Center, ranked #5 in Massachusetts, is only a 16-minute journey north, while nearby Hartford houses three of the top 10 hospitals in Connecticut.
Nursing home care is for seniors with needs best served 24/7 by registered and licensed nurses, physicians and therapists. Unlike hospitals, nursing homes feel homely while still providing high levels of medical support. More able-bodied seniors and those not in need of 24-hour attention may find that assisted living and home health care are better choices for their long-term health care needs.
The costs of different types of senior care in East Longmeadow and the surrounding area are covered by this guide in more detail. It also lists some senior-friendly resources.

A loved one was a resident of Chestnut Hill of East Longmeadow. They did a lot of group activities almost every day. They would have the activity person in a room, and they would play games, or they do art or music. They were just much more involved. A lot of the time the food would be cold. I think the breakfasts are better than the dinners. If I was there, they would offer me a meal as well.

If I could have rated this facility below a 1 I would have. My loved one had two falls while in the facility, one resulting in an ER visit, the other with a possible fx, no one called to report the first fall, terrible communication, staff unresponsive to patient needs, administrator took me to someone else office when I went to complain to him about the care, no follow up. Caution if you are putting your loved ones in this facility. The only good thing was the physical therapy team, they were great, the rest terrible and unclean. Run while you can.

It seems like they are short staffed. My mother was basically going nuts in there and she was miserable there. I would of liked her day filled up a little more like it has been in previous places. She always was happy in other places. I walked in one day and her phone was on the floor. Her TV remote volume did not work. Her Social worker never called me or talked to me. I really feel bad for people who go in these places and have no one. So sad.

We cannot say enough positive words about Mary’s Meadow. We recommend them so highly. My mother was there for a couple of weeks after being hospitalized post a bad fall and having a severe back injury as a result. Mary’s Meadow was recommended to her and our whole family is so grateful she had access to the care there. The staff genuinely care and are so kind, professional, knowledgable, and helpful. They go above and beyond in many ways, including giving my mom uplifting words of encouragement and helping her stay positive.
Also, all the meals are hand-made and nutritious. We were all relieved my mom got the nutritional support and oversight she did while there. She regained a lot of strength from the food, which was always delicious and delivered on time.
The whole place is clean and comfortable. There are doctors, nurses, and other caregiving professionals (e.g., physical therapists, nutritionists, etc.) on hand.
We remain very grateful to the whole team at Mary’s Meadow!

Going to see a family member in a facility is extremely difficult as it is so knowing they’re being taken care of is extremely important. When I first walked into the facility I felt a warm happy feeling. There was a receptionist greeting people as they entered and was there to help people if need be. There was hot coffee made and a cat roaming in the lobby. The lobby has couches which makes it feel like a living room at home. I think this was a great touch so if family members are up to it they can visit in an environment that is comfortable rather than seeing them in a bed looking ill. I asked about the cat and was told they keep the cat for the guests as a feeling of home and not a hospital like setting. When I met with the staff that was caring for my family member they were very sweet and gentle with him. They were patient and caring. Ive been to others that were very business like with no personalities, they were completely different. They seem to all know eachother which is nice. He ended up passing away and the people were extremely sympathetic and expressed how it was an honor to know and care for him. Very touching.

My mom is on a waiting list, and we’re looking at The Suffield House. It was good. The facilities seemed clean. We got to see the one single room set-up. We didn’t have a chance to see double rooms because they were occupied by residents. It was well-maintained and clean. They had an activities calendar posted for the residents, so they knew what was going on every day as far as activities. They had an onsite salon. They had activity rooms. They have outdoor areas. where the residents can go out outside in a courtyard.
The staff answered most of my questions. I dealt with him a number of times via phone calls, and he was frustrating. I talked to him a number of times about my mother. Every time we talked to him, he’d always ask if an application was submitted. At the time I talked to him, he could not tell us where my mom might be on the wait list. It was a little frustrating.

My husband is now living in Fresh River Healthcare. As soon as I went in, I was warmly welcomed by Robin, who is the director. My husband’s disease is Huntington’s as well as dementia, and I’m very happy with the care that he’s being given there. They do offer a lot of activities and you can get PT. They do a lot, but my husband doesn’t want to. Somw people really enjoy it. They go down for art and they do different things, but we just haven’t been in any of the programs as of yet.
I think the staff is wonderful. They’re very caring. They’re very knowledgeable about the disease that my husband has. People know about dementia. However, it was very hard to find a welcoming facility that understood Huntington’s. They understand Huntington’s disease like the personality and the different changes, and that’s what drew me to them. I think they’ve been great. They’re very generous, too. In fact, on Christmas, everyone got a present, and my husband got a beautiful plaid shirt. They’re very welcoming, and I like how they treat everyone. I’m there quite often. I go a lot, so I see a lot. The front desk is very welcoming. I’m very happy with it, but there’s always room for improvement.

They lost her denture, her clothes and discharged her and sent her home without her walker, resulting in 2 falls. We have found her in a wheelchair that belonged to another resident. The communication is terrible. If we could get calls through to her ward they frequently got disconnected. Messages left for individuals in various departments were not consistently returned. Do not recommend.

I was a patient at Blair in November 2016, it was an unexpected stay, I had no time to research, and I was there for hip therapy. I shared a room with one other young lady and we were sort of separated from long term care residents.. I received the best of care, I was so well taking care of. My daily aid was a joy, we laughed all the time., she got me out of bed and relearning to care for myself again. My morning therapy session was intense and my afternoon more useful in gaining strength and use of hip. I looked forward to daily dining with the other long term residents, most in wheel chairs and/or dealing with alzheimers, or other age related conditions. They are of course, a strong lot, dealing with serious conditions bravely. I loved the food, it was so well prepared , with a daily choice of meals, and always soup. The best. I would go there today to eat. The facility is old, dated, but well maintained and clean. The residents who could, were in the corridor traveling in their wheel chairs to participate in daily activities, or meeting in groups to chat. Those who were 100 years old, and there were several, sat where everyone passed by so they could talk with them if they wanted to or could. They dressed up daily. No hanging around in bed clothing unless you were bed bound.. I was impressed with the level of care they provided even when you knew the funds were tight.. I understood that. If in the future I come to need a place to spend my latter years, I think I would look for a private room and a pool, so I don’t think they could supply my wants at this time. But you never know what the future will bring. I hope they are not closed, they serve a need in our community, better to fix the medicaid requirement than to take something greatly needed away from the elderly. I hope the community comes together to fix this. You should visit to see how you can help. Try to grab a meal there. Volunteer

I’ve had meetings with the social worker before because I wasn’t happy with certain things, and then they corrected them. I think if you’re not there every day, your patient tends to get overlooked a little. So I stay on top of them. A lot of times I had to bring in meals because she won’t eat the food. I’m happy with the physical and occupational therapy there, and they do have exercise activities. But I think the menu could use some improvement. Sometimes on the weekends, I find them to be short staffed.

There were activities, and he painted a trivet. The care he got was very good; it’s the communication that was very bad. I loved the care, but I didn’t like the communication. The building itself was mediocre. It’s a shared bathroom for two rooms with two people in each room, but everything was clean.

Staff here is wonderful – very friendly on every occasion, even just when you encounter someone walking down the hall. Great nursing care and physical therapy. As a family member I was made to feel perfectly welcome and my input was encouraged. My husband was a short-term resident who said everyone was very nice and the food was good. The room was perfectly fine – comfortable and with everything needed. But he says the best part of it was the people. I agree!

I have a friend who has gone to Westfield Gardens to do a little rehab after a short hospital stint. I speak to her daily. She is diabetic. The food they give her is NOT geared to a proper diabetic menu. Her med’s are not given properly on a daily basis, some days better than others. Many on staff, not what anyone with a brain would call professional. Apparently, short staffed, telephones are not answered in a prompt, nor a professional manner. Rooms are not cleaned properly on a daily basis, dust is evident on sills and AC’s, dust….that can aggravate asthmatics! Some people go to a place like WG’s for a little rest and rehab without knowing what kind of a place it is and wish they had not.
From what I have learned, I would indeed send my worst enemy there….but certainly not a friend.

Note: Data for East Longmeadow was unavailable, so data for the nearest city, Springfield, was used instead.
The Cost of Other Types of Senior Care
Senior care fees reflect the provider’s costs and the frequency of care. Consequently, adult day care is the most affordable option, with fees averaging $1,452 per month. Home care costs $5,015, as does home health care, which provides limited medical support in addition to home care services. Assisted living accommodation and care mean seniors typically pay $5,750. Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in East Longmeadow, MA
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.

Greater Springfield Senior Services, Inc. is a multiresource agency funded by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs. Its primary purpose is to offer services that enable seniors to remain at home and within the community. These include supporting caregivers through education and practical means, such as the provision of respite care. The agency also manages the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, which advocates for seniors in nursing homes and other types of residential care facilities.
East Longmeadow's seniors are offered two nutritional choices: one for those who can attend the senior center and another for those who are housebound. For a $3 donation, senior center visitors aged 60+ are served freshly-prepared hot meals that include a dessert and drink. The donation for home-delivered meals is the same, and in both examples, there's no income eligibility requirement, and seniors unable to pay are never refused a meal.
The Tri-Town Trolley operates between East Longmeadow, Hampden and Longmeadow. For $1 per trip, it transports seniors in-town for any type of appointment, with the fare rising to $2 for out-of-town journeys. The service operates Mondays to Fridays, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The Council on Aging provides many resources for East Longmeadow's seniors. These range from practical in-home support, such as File of Life, a magnetized pouch with emergency numbers conveniently positioned on the senior's fridge, to health care proxy services, which enable seniors to plan for their own life support and make them known to key family members. The agency also specializes in services for the disabled, such as installing adaptive phone equipment in their homes free of charge and arranging an enhanced 911 service, which helps first responders understand and prepare for the disabled adult's unique circumstances.
