"Mom is in Fleur Heights Center For Wellness and Rehab. The people there had been pleasant, and mom is getting the attention that she needs. Mom is sharing a room with another resident. They have bingo. They watch movies. They have a creative director, and mom is interested in art so she enjoys doing that. "

"I like that Pleasant Care Living Center is in a small community and it has a small town feel to it. The staff there seemed very, very friendly and very upfront with information. It smelled a little bit, but a lot of them do. They have memory care there, too. My husband felt like the private room was too small, but I told him that all private rooms are small. You're not going to find anything bigger. They didn't have a separate shower for the private room. You have to go down the hallway for a shower. But it is an old building, so it wouldn't have accommodated that."

"My father is living in Wesley Acres. What we liked about it was they have three levels of care in the assisted living area. They kind of base it on what your needs are. You have to pay for a commitment of two years. Once my dad runs out of money, they don't make them move someplace else. They have ways to keep him where he's at. I like the idea that he doesn't have to move again, unless he's moving into a nursing home setting or memory care; that is all offered right there. The unit that he is in doesn't have a dishwasher, but it has a full stove, a full refrigerator, and a microwave. They have different things all the time. They have a pool and a gym area. They have activities every week. This week for the ladies, they're doing a sip and paint. They have different things throughout the week. They give them a sheet in their rooms, and they also have it posted in elevators and different places. They have activities all throughout the day. They also offer in-home therapy. He had an order for therapy, so they're able to do that therapy right there onsite. On Friday, they had a tailgate party for the Iowa State game (which is a big thing here in Iowa). They were able to go down to this general area, have tailgate food, and just kind of hang out. I thought that was kind of cool. The maintenance guy actually took him down because he was working in his room. The value for the money is good."

"University Park is nice, but I want more independent care. They are nice and very good people. They are very experienced, and they work really well with the patients. They take the time out to deal with each patient, and I really enjoy them. We have really great food here. It is very well balanced, nutritious, and good. We have activities all the time. We have movies, crafts, and games like the Wii game. We have the nails done in the beauty shop. We have bible study and church. We have a lot of things going on. I will recommend this facility to others. "

"Parkridge Specialty Care is excellent. The staff is wonderful and caring. They have a lot of compassion for the residents. My dad's room is wonderful. It's a clean and good-sized room. We were allowed to bring stuff from home and decorate it. My dad said the food was very good and warm. It's affordable. They have church services, bingo, and a beautiful garden where you can go to. It's wonderful."

"A couple years ago, I visited a nursing home that my mother worked at. The exterior was very nice. There were nice gardens and benches that the residents could sit at on warm summer days. When I walked through the front doors, there was a nice sitting area with flowers arranged on numerous tables. The building was neat and decorated very beautifully. My mother took me on a tour of the living quarters. I was very disappointed after seeing the rooms that the elderly people slept in. They were very dull and crowded. There were two beds in one room and the beds were twin size. The rooms seemed outdated compared to the rather modern dining area and game rooms. The nursing home had different events throughout the week such as bingo, card games, and karaoke. I was able to attend lunch. I helped my mother bring some of the elderly people to the dining area. There were about ten tables. Each table sat about four people. The meals did not look very tasty to me. I chose not to eat. The staff was very friendly and they really seemed to care for the residents. Everyone had a smile on his or her face. I would say the positive definitely outweighed the negative. "

"The primary thing we liked about Pine Acres Rehabilitation And Care Center was that they have Medicaid beds immediately available. Secondly, just walking in and seeing the seniors that were there, they all looked happy and were enjoying an activity. There's a large open space for eating, playing bingo, watching TV, and doing that stuff as a community. The rooms were bigger than what I had seen in other places as far as Medicaid beds where they have to share a room, and the rooms were brighter and seemed more homey. I met with a social worker who gave me the tour and she was very helpful. She was able to show me a couple of rooms that would be very similar to what my mom would be in. The nursing staff that I saw all looked happy, engaged, and energetic. They had PT and OT in-house, a hairdresser who had a studio there and came in once a week to do haircuts for the residents, a dentist and a podiatrist that came in once a month to see residents who needed that, and transportation to and from appointments. They also had an activity room and a separate eating area for residents to have gatherings with their families. The only thing was I had to initiate most of the contact with the staff."

"My wife moved to Luther Park Community. It seemed to be the best fit for her. I liked the facility. The people were extremely friendly, so that's why we went there, and the fact that they take Medicaid. Her room is small but it's enough for her. It is nice and it has everything that she needs. It has a restroom and TV. It has big picture windows, so she could see the courtyard from her room. She does participate at times, but right now, she's kind of got her days at night, so she's awake a lot at night and then sleeps a lot during the day, but when she's awake, she does take part in the activities. I've been there several times and the food has always been good. I haven't eaten anything that I didn't like."

"My dad is a resident of Calvin Community for about two years now. He started on the skilled nursing floor and got better and then moved to assisted living. It is a Christian faith-based community which is fun because we are Jewish. My dad is the only Jewish resident, and they could not be nicer. They are wonderful, loving, and supportive. It has a coffee shop on the bottom floor that is staffed by a volunteer and when you go in there and have a cookie and a piece of cake you can't even pay for it; it is free. At Christmas time, it looks like Santa Claus is about to come in; it is magical and beautiful. They have activities all the time. It is a loving and wonderful place and good. He is in a very big single room which is nice. He participates in some of the activities and some of them he does not. The place has a courtyard, flowers, and a yard, too."

"The location of Prairie Vista Village is ideal for me because it's close to two of my sons and I like that the home has a patio, which I like having in my apartment. I like the idea that there are two meals a day included in the rent. The rent was affordable to me and there's a garage. The apartment that I will be in has two bedrooms with a full kitchen and laundry (a washer and dryer). The rooms are all quite spacious, larger than the rooms in the house that I'm living in now. There's lots of light in the rooms. The living room has large windows on two sides and the bedroom also has a large window and lots of closet space. The lady who gave the tour was very, very bright, and very intelligent, and she answered all of my questions exactly the way I wanted to satisfy my curiosity. She was very nice. They have an area where people can plant plants in the summertime if they get the urge to do some gardening. There is a small area for that and there's a walking path around the building."
