The historical city of Mobile, Alabama, boasts warm weather almost year-round and a relatively low cost of living. Although the median age in the area is 38, people over the age of 65 still account for 16.6% of the population. There are plenty of health care facilities locally, and Alabama Medicaid offers a specialty PACE program in Baldwin and Mobile counties for seniors over the age of 55. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020, the cost of a semiprivate room in a local nursing home is $6,540, which is below the national average of $7,756.
A nursing home is often the best solution for older adults who require care and assistance around the clock. This type of facility includes monitoring and treatment from a registered nurse in addition to assistance with eating, bathing and getting dressed. If necessary, seniors also get regular access to occupational and physical therapy. Those who don’t require around-the-clock support could consider home health care or assisted living, both of which are more affordable than nursing care.
In this guide, we take an in-depth look at the cost of nursing care in Mobile and provide some handy free resources to help older adults living in the area.

When my elderly father was diagnosed with dementia and my mother could no longer care for him by herself, they were both accepted into the Little Sisters of the Poor. What a blessing! They took such very good care of my father and were standing near his bed praying for him as he took his last breath. My mother continues to live there and absolutely loves it. The nuns and the nursing staff have all been so amazing. I’ve visited numerous times and the facility has always been absolutely spotless. My mother raves about the food selections, although she is not picky at all and will eat anything. They always have activities planned for the residents and various holiday parties. For the more mobile residents, they have little day trips. I agree with the other reviewer, the rooms are very home-like with decorations and picture frames, etc. They have a library for those who enjoy reading. Anyway, I highly recommend this facility to anyone. It has been an absolute blessing to our family. Frankly, we couldn’t have down it without their assistance. Thank you Little Sisters of the Poor! You are the best!

Went on a tour before my mother was admitted and I thought this would be a great place for rehab. everything seemed nice and clean. I was completely wrong. The management and administrators are lazy. My mom’s room would be filthy. I would have to ask for trash bags to get the room cleaned. Whenever the staff came in to change her, they would leave a complete mess. The cafeteria staff should be fired. The food looked disgusting so we brought in food daily. The doctor was rude and even told me my mom’s diagnosis in the hallway while other people were around which I am pretty sure it’s against HIPAA. On the weekends you couldn’t get in or out because they don’t have anyone to open the doors. I spoke with Jeff (the director) about it and he flat out said he wasn’t going to hire someone. His attitude is horrible. A nurse told me to knock on the window by a side door. My mom’s care was awful. They are not organized. I would have to find people to help me. The lady over nursing is rude and she can care less about the patients and her staff. If you want to find management they sit in a conference room all day. You can hear patients screaming for help and they get it ignored. I pressed the call light and it took almost an hour for someone to come. I would end up changing my mom by myself. A CNA actually said she didn’t have time. They didn’t change sheets unless I requested. My mom’s bed was so filthy. They would throw the dirty towels and sheets in the bathroom. We had to request the room get clean. I wish I could give a negative number because one star is too nice. Do not let anyone go near this place. We called the home office which is located in Tuscaloosa and never received a call back. Now I am going to call the state board. This place needs to be closed until they can get a brand new management staff and another doctor. Patient care is not a priority. The staff that didn’t quit isn’t a priority. Let’s not forget the long term patient rooms looks like a jail cell.

It was very clean and very modern looking, but it was almost too institutional. It didn’t have a homey feeling about it. The lady that gave us a tour was very nice, very professional, friendly, and helpful. They didn’t have good parking. They had an outdoor space, but it wasn’t shady or pretty. It was just out there in the open.

My dad was in this home for 20 days. The first day they put him in a wheelchair, slumped over , not strapped to the chair at all in a common room. He told them he wanted to go to bed. They told my brother he had to sit there until 5:00, it was lunchtime then. My sister in law went and ask the lady her name , she was going to report her and the lady would not give her name. A few minutes later they came and put him in the bed. They didn’t even have on his chart he was a fall risk. The doctor had taken him off a medication and the evening staff gave him this medicine anyway. My sister told her he wasn’t supposed to get the medicine anymore and she said it was on his chart. The nurse the next morning went and got the medicine and put in in the garbage. He was supposed to be getting physical therapy because he had been sick for over a month and had no strength to stand by himself.
I don’t think they gave him pt everyday. The evening before he was released, he was happy, talking , glad to be going home the next day. When they released him. He was asleep. They said he didn’t sleep any the night before. My brother had to put him in the car, he stayed asleep the whole trip hone, slept all day and night.
I do not recommend this place at all. Unless your just want a clean facility for your loved one to lay up in bed and be ignored all day.

She complained of a sore throat for months, she was diagnosed with cancer months later. She required dental treatment before radiation abd chemo. We had to call the supervisir, meet with staff, look for a dentist familiar with cancer of the mouth, the bottom line was money, she did not receive dental treatment. Her oncologist said she had to start radiation immediately, the cancer had spread. The day of radiation, the doctor wouldnot give her radiation because she would have died during the procedure. The ambulance attendees refused to take her back to Sea Breeze, they took her to the ER, where she was kept on the critical care unit over 30 days. She was released three dYs ago with a treache. She is back in ER, her kidneys have shut down and the doctors are running tests to find out what happened in three days at Sea Breeze. We are preparing for the worst.

My mother in law went into Mercy Medical for rehabilitation following surgery in October 2010. Things seemed to be Okay there The nursing staff friendly, and helpful. We enjoyed her time upstairs in the rehab department. In December of 2010 we were told my mother in law could not rehab any further and needed long term care. She was transferred downstairs to their long term care facility. That is when the problems arose. She was left unattended many times in the restroom for up to 45 minutes. She fell down and had bruises on her legs and arms for being unattended. She was left lying on her back with No oxygen which she needed to survive. She started to beg for us to get her out of there because she claimed they were going to kill her. A few days later on the night of December 29, 2010 my mother in law was left laying down on her back again with no elevation, and no oxygen. She went into respiratory failure and had to be rushed to the hospital. Where she did actually die and had to be revived. She was in a medically induced coma for about two weeks. They asked if we wanted to let her go, or let her fight to stay alive. She was able to make a full recovery. She now has a tracheotomy tube, but is at her own home and able to drive again. She never had to return back to Mercy Medical and we will never use them again. We were also never able to get her $400 digital camera, brand new $300 glasses, and other miscellaneous items returned to us.

The nurses that I met while visiting this facility were nice while in my presence. I personally believe however that they contributed to my fathers death. Before my Father had been in this facility he was in another facility located in Daphne, AL for a month or two with no problems. Within two to three days of being moved to Eight Mile Nursing and Rehabilitation my fathers condition deteriorated extremely fast. He went from being awake and conscious to sleeping all day long and not being able to wake up even when any of my family would come to see him. I was very disturbed by this behavior since my father never slept this much before moving to this facility. After a few days my father was moved to the hospital and remained there for a few weeks until he was able to come home even though his condition was still not that of before he went to the nursing home. A few weeks later my father passed away. I believe that eight mile nursing and rehabilitation sedated him so they didn’t have to deal with him and because he was asleep all the time they neglected to try and keep him hydrated which worsened his condition and eventually contributed to his death.

There are plenty of areas in Alabama with a similar monthly price point as Mobile, including Montgomery, where it’s $10 cheaper, at $6,530. The cost of nursing home care in Huntsville is $6,950, which is slightly more expensive but still around $800 below the U.S. average. The most affordable option in Mobile is adult day health care, which is just $433 per month. Opting for an assisted living facility is the second most affordable option, with an average monthly cost of $3,318. Home care and home health care are slightly more expensive, at $3,432 and $3,813 respectively. Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Mobile, AL
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
