As the most-populous city in Alabama, Birmingham is home to just under 210,000 people, and about 15% of the city’s residents are seniors aged 65 and older. There are a number of nationally-ranked health care centers in Birmingham, including the UAB Hospital which has a dedicated Heart and Vascular Center. According to Genworth Financial’s 2020 Cost of Care Survey, the average cost of nursing home care in Birmingham is $6,388 for a semiprivate room, which is quite affordable in comparison to the nationwide average rate of $7,756.
Nursing homes, also known as skilled nursing facilities, provide long-term care to those with complex medical needs. Around-the-clock staffing, daily therapeutic recreational programming and hands-on help with activities of daily living are just some of the services provided, and that’s why nursing homes cost much more than other types of senior care, such as home care or assisted living.
This guide provides an overview of nursing home care in Birmingham, including nursing home rates here and in nearby cities. There’s also a list of free and low-cost community resources for seniors and their family members.

Galleria Woods is great. When people look for a retirement community, they need to look beyond their current needs to what they may need in the future. Galleria Woods has all the levels of care, from Independent Living thru Skilled Nursing. They have large apartments, a swimming pool, card rooms, conceriege services, four dining areas, unbelievable activities to plays, museums, parks and concerts and will even drive you to the doctor! They have chefs and even have their own pastry chef. The staff is very nice, always smiling and very professional. One way to tell a good community is to ask the people who live there. They are very happy and will all tell you they wish they had moved there sooner!

My mom is at the skilled nursing area of St. Martin’s In the Pines. I like that it is a cottage type setting with only ten residents per floor. All the meals are cooked there, and they’ve got a large gathering room with reclining chairs, a fireplace, a huge kitchen, a dining room, and screened-in porch. It’s like living in a home instead of being in a traditional nursing home.
Thus far, the staff has been very caring. Their ratio is five patients to one care provider, plus they have an RN 24 hours a day, and so far, the care has been good.
They’ve only been open to visitors for ten days now because of COVID, which is how most of the places are, and as far as cost, their price is in line with everybody else.

My mother-in-law has been at this facility for 12 days for physical therapy. They have done absolutely NOTHING! I have lost count of how many times she called us crying because of how they were doing her! Calls to the nurse go unanswered! It took forever to get a bedpan several times, sometimes it was too late. Many times she was left on the bedpan for a lengthy amount of time. She has wounds that need cleaned and dressed. They don’t take care of them correctly. She’s had 3 baths since she got here. Most of the nurses are rude! Forget trying to talk to someone “higher up”. They’re just as rude! She was there for physical therapy but never got it! First they told her that they had to order her a bigger wheelchair. It came on a Monday and they told her they would take her to the gym the next day. That never happened! They did use a hoist to move her to the wheelchair then left her there for HOURS and would come when she used the call button. Basically, all they did was feed her and give her meds (that they dropped the ball on). She is SO disappointed because she WANTED the therapy! This was her last chance to become mobile and more independent but because of Aspire she won’t be able to! She lost all motivation and trust of these types of facilities because of her experience here!

My mom has been in East Glen several times for rehab. My mother-in-law has been there several times too for rehab so I am very familiar with the facility. It’s a very nice facility, very clean and updated. With COVID stuff, it is kinda hard to tell, with all the activities they are getting to do, compared to what they used to be able to do. But I know they constantly have some kind of activity forum in keeping them busy and that was one of my concerns. The fact of her going from rehab to the skilled nursing side and not being able to have outside visitors, how they’re gonna be able to keep them from feeling lonely. They said they keep them very busy with activities so I’m trusting in that.
As far as visiting in the rehab part, I have wheeled her around to that end of the complex. It’s not a separate building, it’s a small facility anyway. When she’s been in the rehab part, I would always encourage her to participate so I would be there when they were having bingo and that sort of thing even when my mother-in-law was in there. From what I saw, they were happy. I think that alone, if they are happy, then that’s all that matters to me. That means they are being treated right and not depressed.
The food was always very good to me every time that I’ve been there. The seasonings gotta be different because people have medical situations as far as salt and that type of seasoning. I think that was probably one of my mother’s complaints cause it’s not season enough. It’s always been kept very clean. Sometimes you can walk in to a nursing home or hospice, you automatically have that different smell. I never really experienced that when I walked in to that facility. It’s closer to home so that’s a major drive for me.

My Mom has passed away due to Delirium and trauma from this place. Do not send your loved one here if they have dementia, Alzheimer’s or has to wear adult diapers. We didn’t realize how bad Mom had gotten until we had her back home. Her bottom was completely raw, even going up her lower back from no diaper changes. She had bruises on legs and hips. One of our family members went Everyday to check on her and didn’t realize the diaper situation & bruises, since Mom really couldn’t communicate. My mother had -had hip surgery and was sent here for PT for 3 weeks (Medicare covered) they said she was doing ok with PT (so they could get her Medicare $) so we thought oh great she’ll be able to walk again. Well a few days before she was discharged they said she wouldn’t cooperate, always agitated, and there was nothing they could do for her(again-they received her Medicare $ for the 21 days and they were done with my Mom!) They hadn’t helped her at all, except to traumatized her! So they are in no way equipped to handle dementia patients! Staff is rude also!Do not send your love one here.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Birmingham, Alabama
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
