I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My vulnerable, dependent loved one is suffering every day. Crying almost daily. Food served cold. Late or forgotten meds. Inattentive care. Personal items disappear. This review is for the permanent nursing home residents not the short term rehab.

I am/was a resident of this facility

The staff were generally friendly and kind - but my impression was that they were terribly overworked and stressed, probably because they were understaffed. But, generally, I got what I needed because (1) I was ambulatory. and able to walk to the desk when I needed something, (2) my son was in the neighborhood and was involved with staff decisions on my behalf, (3) he provided me with his food-ordering service so I could order healthier food (for example, what food service gives a diabetic patient two starches and a dessert in one meal?) and (4) he brought me a bottle of Tylenol so I didn't always have to wait for the nurses to bring my meds (again, going back to how understaffed they were). The building has an old-fashioned feel, which I liked. The rooms were quite tight - so, okay, not the worst thing, since I wasn't on a vacation, but recovering from surgery. The shower room was strange, full of huge, imposing-looking. equipment, which I didn't need and not really a comfortable shower situation. The physical therapists I saw were really great, worked hard with me to get me ready to go home, including taking me outside to walk. (There is a pleasant park just a block and a half away..) They seemed to work hard with everyone, and there were some very disabled people there who needed a lot of help. They always seemed gentle and kind to my eyes. As for activities, not much that interested me. For example, no good films, nothing that inspired conversation or interaction. There were a lot of dazed-looking patients seemingly endlessly watching TV, or set in the hallways in their wheelchairs, just waiting. . . . for what? They did have some extra services, which I appreciated, in particular, an acupuncturist who visited me twice. I would have seen her more, but I wasn't made aware until the last week that it was available. She was incredible!

I visited this facility

First, the nursing and other staff were kind and caring. I even liked the food. I was pretty helpless for a while and received good attention. The rehab was ok, but there was a lot of sitting around. Most of the residents I saw were in various stages of dementia, which was depressing. There was only one person I met with whom I could converse. One warning: I had the distinct impression that they wanted to keep me longer than necessary. I had a lot of trouble getting a necessary x-ray that finally allowed me to go home. I would not go back there if I had a choice. Also, at one point they seemed to have run out of gloves.

After Cobble Hill decided that my friend no longer needed rehab, they transferred her to a chronic floor where she was almost the only patient who had her wits about her and could communicate. She was desperate to go home, but Cobble Hill was generally not helpful in meeting that reasonable goal. As a private pay patient they not only charged her more than the rate paid by NYS, they charged her extra for almost any service, dressings, for example! At the very least, she was neglected....almost bordering on abuse. She just recently managed to escape home. I am telling anyone I can .... DO NOT EVER PUT ME IN COBBLE HILL.

This place is horrendous. They have no idea how to take care of their elderly patients. My relative was transferred here to rehab and gain his strength back after being in the hospital. His health declined to the point where he was not able to communicate or eat. They insisted he was fine and that they were still providing rehabilitation to home- walking and gaining strength back. The family removed him from the facility. 4 days later he passed away. I would not recommend this place to anyone. They have no desire to rehab they are just taking whatever payments they can get from mediare and insurance.

This place is terrible I would not recommend this place to anyone. I must say the staff is changing so maybe in the future it may be better but as of now it remain terrible. The food terrible the care terrible the staff not friendly not easy to speak to everyone looks speaks and acts miserable and if you are concern with this part of care run away! My father was there 2 times because they are the only ones that would take his insurance. He is a amputee of both legs many times he would be in his room for hours and know one came in to see how he was doing only to clean him and help dress him which was 2 time a day and give him meds, if my father did not have family that cared about him, it would be worse because neither would the staff. I really don’t like anything about this place. Even there front security doesn’t pay attention I walked passed and upstairs with them sitting with there heads down or occupied with less important things I am not ever going to speak nice about this place

This place is awful, do not send your loved one to this nurse home or for rehabilitation. They claim the highest standards of care but they don't tend to your loved one properly. The dont come when you request assistance to use the restroom or bedpan. When you request pain medication they also take a long time to get it. They provide minimal care. My mother is there to rehabilitate after surgery but she is worst than when she arrived. Some staff are rude and unprofessional. I took my mother out of this facility before a negative outcone occured.

I advise who ever is to bring a family member or someone not to. they are horrible.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My mother was at Cobble Hill for almost 7 years. She was on the Alzheimers Dementia unit 5B. Her care was outstanding. The food was good and if you didn't care for something they would get you something else to eat. The place was clean, the housekeeping staff were always working diligently to keep the place clean. Throughout those years I had the chance to meet with all different people, Nurses, Social Workers, Dieticians, Accounting staff, Housekeepers, Doctors, CNA's and Administrative staff. Both mine and my mother's needs were respected and met. My mother's last years were filled with a quality of life that I could never have given her. She was well taken care of and loved by the wonderful angels on 5B. I was there everyday for my mother and also for the people that took care of her. I realized that because of my Angels, I had peace of mind, security and the knowledge that mom was in good hands. I also realized if there was any way I could help them or any of the residents on the floor I would try my best to do whatever they needed me to. I have recommended Cobble Hill to numerous people and will continue to. I will also continue to help them, because they have become family and they have shown me that you don't turn your back on family. Two thumbs up for Cobble Hill, keep it up. Quality of life is everything. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Cobble Hill Health Center was not bad, but I think it was not as good as where my mother is now. They were kind to her. They were just not very attentive. She stayed there for a couple of months. She had a good room. The food seemed good to me. I was comfortable when she was there.

I am a friend or relative of resident

My dad was a resident for about 5 months after a back operation. When he ran out of the allotted time for physical therapy that Medicare would allow, the staff refused to let me hire a PT to come to his room and refused to give him more time for PT (even when I offered to pay). Dad was left in a bed all day and night and could not walk on his own, had food brought to him that he did not like, and he started losing weight. It was only through our persistence and with the help of a home care agency that we were able to get Dad out of there. Now a year later, Dad is able to walk, goes to a PT clinic 3x a week, and has an aide at his home. It is way cheaper to get an aide at home than staying at this horrible place ($22,000 a month if you pay out of pocket). The staff were apathetic, the social worker less than helpful, and there is an atmosphere of running this place like a business. The social services director kept asking us how much money Dad had. It was a terrible experience, and I strongly urge family members to take an active role in parent care. I was lucky to be there for several days at a time, so I could see what the day-to-day was like.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

My uncle was admitted into the Cobble Hill nursing home on December 27, 2011 and the transition from the hospital to the nursing home was successful. He has been admitted for a six week regimen of antibotic infusion. Therefore he is able to do what is necessary for his own daily needs. Unfortunately, my uncle has a rooomate who is, and I believe the phrase is non-ambulatory, he is unable to walk or care for himself. I am unaware of the gentlemans conditions but my uncle complains about the level of care his roommate recieves. Just yesterday my uncle stated "This gentleman layed in his own waste for over three hours and if I needs to go into a nursing home for care that this is not the facility he would want to reside at". When visiting the facility its cleaniliness is fair, as it was the holidays and many of the staff are on vacation. Food appears to be fair, my uncle is unhappy as condiments are limited. Overall Cobble Hill Nursing Home is a place I would consider if I needed to place a family member for long term care. Location is great.

My loved one stayed here

They left my mother to dehydrate and had not given her proper medication. If you have a loved one , you may want to consider another facility in the city. Rude personel is enough to scared us away for good. Thank God we got her out of there!
