With about 6,400 baby boomers who turn 65 each year, Des Moines is emerging as a great retirement destination in the Midwest. Featuring multiple senior centers in Des Moines and its suburbs, a strong bus system and a highly walkable downtown area, Iowa’s state capital provides a strong community feel for its seniors. A low cost of living, several golf courses, a casino and an emerging restaurant scene have earned Des Moines accolades as one of the nation’s best places to live, and many older adults agree with that assessment, as Des Moines is home to more than 25,000 seniors.
To help seniors discover the most senior-friendly locations around the country, Caring.com conducted a new study, “The Best and Worst Places for Senior Living.” The Caring Senior Living Report analyzes and ranks 300 cities and 50 states on the quality of senior living in that area. The cities were graded using 46 metrics across five categories: Health Care, Senior Living & Housing, Affordability, Quality of life, and Transportation.
