We went to see Five Star Residences of North Woods in Kokomo. I think that's where my dad will end up going, mostly because that's what he's going to be able to afford, and it's a really good place. They're really friendly, and they've been really helpful in answering questions. The person who gave us the tour went above and beyond trying to help us understand everything. She has given us a lot of information. Her name is Katrina, and she's done a great job. We were there, and she just kind of went over what the place provides, the cost of everything, the levels of care, and what we could expect while my dad is there. What we've seen is really great. There wasn't any odor; everything was great.

North Woods Commons has individual garden homes. What I liked about it was the independent living residents could live independently but they still provide meals. The food is excellent, and they have a lot of activities going on. They had five different card games that I like to play, Bible study, weekly Church services, exercise programs, and a walking club. It is a very active community and they allow dogs. The staff is very client-oriented and very friendly. They have pendants to send a nurse to your casita in case of emergency.

My mother right now is independent, and they are working to help them stay independent for as long as possible. The staff seems really helpful and very nice. The room at Northwood Commons is a much bigger space than the other facility; that is why she chose this one. The staff was very helpful, they were friendly, and they were very good to introduce my mother to the different clients that they have there and talked about getting her involved in some of the activities. They were very interested in what she wanted to do and were willing to add it. The menu is just phenomenal. It’s like dining every night and every lunch time because you can choose what you want off of the menu. And then, if you don’t want what is served, you can special order whatever you want. She liked it. It wasn’t a stuffy atmosphere as a couple of other places. A couple of them were a little more forma0,l and this was less formal.

The visit to Northwood was fine. We talked to the administrator, the person that’s in-charge of showing us the facility and showed us a room and we talked shortly about what our options were but we found out very quickly that he did not qualify. But the rooms have their own bathroom and kitchenette. They seemed to have a lot of activities for the people living there but we didn’t really get to stay very long.. I saw the room where they had movies and they had church group. There is a hospital 5 miles away. I was disappointed that they weren’t able to help us but that’s not their fault.

I visited North Woods Commons. The rooms were very nice. What I liked about them is they had everything a la carte. You only pay for what you need to pay for. It was an older structure. They didn’t have a lot of activities. The staff was friendly. There’s the grocery store Kroger nearby. There are restaurants. There are pharmacies out there, but they’re not close to the mall or movie theaters. They would have to travel a little way to go to those things, but the hospital is close. The dining area was a little confined. They have assigned seating, which is treating the people like children. You want to sit with your friend, but you have to go and sit with someone else. I thought that was a little childish.
Provider Response
Thank you so much for your feedback. We were happy to hear that there were several aspects of our community that you enjoyed, but disappointed that you felt that our dining experience was not the right fit for you. Although the seating in our dining room is assigned, we let our residents choose where they would like to sit in order to avoid confusion in the dining room. We would like to invite you back for a complimentary meal where you can get the chance to meet and hopefully befriend some of our residents!

We were invited to lunch at North Woods Commons and we had it in the private dining room, which was right next to the open dining room. It was very nice. The food was very good. I was impressed with the menu because it was complete. The rooms and the windows in the rooms were not very big. Their activities rooms were not big either, but they seemed to have places for adequate activities. They had their own full-time nursing staff. What I liked best about them was that they were on a very lovey area. Their outside landscaping was very pretty and it made it very pleasant. I would recommend them to others.

I would give Northwoods Commons 5 stars , one for every year my father has lived there. He can be as busy as he wants or quiet in his room, they have outings and programs for every level of energy. He does need the nursing program and it has been beyond satisfactory. His room is clean and since we have had them do his laundry they have never lost any of his clothing. We have eaten with him several times and used the club room for family parties, their food is flavorful and the servers are a joy.

My mother lives at NWC. Her only complaint in the dining room staff. The billing for medical services is always inaccurate. I have to call every month.
