While a lot of hospitals have done away with skilled care units on site, Rush Oak Park has maintained theirs. This is a unit licensed as skilled nuring beds, just like a nursing home, but within the hospital. This offers a nice alternative typically for elderly people who need sub-acute level rehab and therapy that allows them to potentially avoid having to go to a nursing home to receive it. Therapy services here are less intense than one is required to participate in when in the acute level rehab program, which is also available at the hospital. Rush Oak Park Hospital is on the western edge of Oak Park, readily accessible by public transit and close to the expressway. The skilled care unit is on the fifth floor and residents do not typically venture off the unit during their stay. The unit offers a large dining room and has a nicely appointed therapy area, but no real common areas for visiting. The rooms are typical hospital rooms which are set up for two beds, but are often only utilized for one person per room, which is nice for the patients. The food is average hospital fare, and sometimes patients complain that it offers too little variety. The staff is overall fantastic, and tend to have less turnover than one would find in many nursing home rehab units. Care rendered is kind, compassionate and appropriate. For people hoping to get home after rehab, they are fortunate if they are able to take advantage of this program.
