As a family member living out of state, I can confidently share that the Hawthorne Center for Rehab is clean and aesthetically pleasing, with plenty of hard working staff who connect with their patients. My mom called Hawthorne her home for 3 1/2 years and I knew she was receiving the best care.

Mom was at Hawthorne Center for Rehabilitation of Sarasota. It looks deceivingly nice. There is a little seating area with some chairs and it's straight out the windows. There's some water and some outside chairs with umbrellas so that people can go outside and sit at the tables. It looks pleasant. They have two types of staff. One is the staff that takes care of my mom. With them, I felt like all they would do was provide pills, and it took a long time for them to answer a call light. Once the call light was answered, it was answered by an assistant, and then after the assistant answered the light, it would go to the nurse and it would take a good half an hour to an hour to get pain medication for my mom (sometimes even longer). If you have to go to the bathroom, it takes a long time for them to come to help you. It's a hit or miss because it's not usually the same staff every day, but you may get a really good assistant one day. If you have to ask every time to get water, you always have to ask for what you need. They'll never say, "Oh, can I do this?" or "Can I help you with this?" or "Do you need anything?" It's very tough to get them into your room. They don't seem like they want to stay. It's like they just come in very briefly. The nurse doesn't even tell you exactly what you have. "It's just a pain pill." I feel that the staff didn't have a good indication of what they were providing for Mom. For rehab, I expected a little bit more. I felt like Mom was just in her room all by herself, and she had to call out and wait for somebody to come and help her. I found it very disappointing. I felt like they could have been a little bit more attentive. As a family member, I would come into the hallway and see some of the staff on their phone, and they're just sitting there. The assistants wear different colors and the call lights would be on and they'd be sitting there. I'm still mobile and I can walk around, but these other poor souls are in the rooms waiting for help. When it comes to that, I feel there are some improvements. I don't know if it's just the staff morale is low there, but I know the nurses seem very, very busy. They've got a lot to pass out with their medications and whatnot, but I feel it could have been better. I would not recommend that place to anybody else. They will hand out a piece of paper at the beginning of the day, and it'll give you an idea of what will happen on that day. It'll say Ring toss or Bingo or different activities. They would even say that they would have magazines available at all times. My mom inquired about the magazines and they never fell through with it. You get that piece of paper, but they never came around and said "Hey, would you like to do the ring toss? We're having this at this certain time." You get that one little piece of paper in the morning, and that was it. The only time I see people congregate would be during meal times when they had to get some of their people up to the table to sit together to eat the meals. There was only time I could see a get-together. The food is poor. Mom refused to eat it. She said it was so horrible. It's very salty. I had to bring her some food. Mom likes the physical therapy people. They were caring and good, but the problem with them was that they didn't communicate when they would come and see her to coordinate with the nurses for pain medicine. Usually if you're going to exercise, you want pain meds ahead of time and then they would coordinate with my mom to go. So, they could improve on that as well. I would give the PT people a four rating and I would give the nursing staff and everybody else a two. My mom had some bugs there. Somebody had to come in to take care of those bugs while she was there. What would help them would be rotating the staff. If they would come in and check in every couple of hours and just ask "Do you need anything?" "Do you need water?", but you don't see the nurses unless you're begging for them. So, it would be nice to have that system. That would be awesome. It would also be nice that the nursing staff would be able to tell them exactly what they're giving them in their medication instead of just giving them pills and saying "Here, take your medicine."

BEWARE!! The facility should not be licensed. Don't let the updated lobby fool you. The nurses are cold, unskilled and uncaring. Administration including Director of Nursing and Administrator are untrained in Healthcare, rude and lacking general courtesies and manners. Physical and Occupational staff are aids, not licensed therapists and looked bored, offering no encouragement to patients. Call bells are not answered as staff is on internet or watching TV. The A/C does not work on the second floor. Had to move mom out after three days. DON said I could not use the wheelchair in her room to get her downstairs and to my car. She had a broken hip. I had to call police. I cry everytime I think of that day and the terrors and torture we all went through. I forgot to say they required a family member there 24/7 since they did not understand how to care for dementia patients yet salesperson stated when talking with Sarasota Memorial when they looked for the best place for mom to recover, that they offered Memory Care and could take patients with dementia.

My mother-in-law was in Hawthorne Center for Rehabilitation of Sarasota. They were very attentive to everybody's needs. I couldn't say that I dislike anything. They took very good care of her. The staff was very kind. They communicated very well. The food was very good. Good nutrition. It wasn't bland. It still had flavor. They were very clean because I think after COVID, they were always cleaning. It's a new facility. They have a courtyard out there. They have different rooms where they can do activities and have music and whatnot. There were two different rooms. She had one where she did share a room and it was divided. Then, she had her own room which was more spacious, she had her own amenities, and she didn't have to share. The dining area had multiple tables and you could have multiple people sitting in the area at the same time. It's kind of like a cafe style. The courtyard was very nice and open, with a fountain and everything, and had very nice landscaping.

We liked that the Hawthorne Center for Rehabilitation of Sarasota was very clean and was more relaxed. It felt less like a hospital and more like a home. I also liked the activities that they have. They have people that come in and play music for them. They also play games with them and do some courtyard activities.
