We liked DeSoto Palms Assisted Living Community. It had everything. The apartments were nice. The people seemed to be very friendly. They have a lot of activities to do and people coming in and entertainment, that kind of thing. They were very thorough and very nice. We're gonna go back and look at it again. It just seemed to be well thought out. They had a salon and it was very nice. The upkeep was excellent. It couldn't be better. It's near the mall, so there are a lot of restaurants and stores.

I visited this facility

When I visited DeSoto Palms Assisted Living Community, I did notice there were not very many people around inside. I don't know if it's because of the time that I went over there, it was about 3:30 PM. I did not see more than a couple of people inside, they said it holds 85, but they only had 65 there. It was painted a beautiful peach, with different shades of peach, and white on the outside. It was three stories high, and the inside was immaculate, beautifully painted. When you come in, you see a beautiful fireplace and bookshelves for their library. They have a snack counter where you can get drinks and snacks. It was on three floors rather than just one huge floor, I felt that was better. The patients don't have to walk so far. It's only just the width of the building that's narrow, and the length of the building in front, that's the size of it. It holds 85 people. The colors were just so warm and inviting. Different walls were painted different colors in the apartments. There were pale green, some lime green trim, and peaches. The rooms were big. The apartment I looked at was over 600 square feet. They have a beautiful big bedroom with a big closet, a good-sized living room, and a kitchenette area. Plus, it had two small closets in the hallway and a beautiful bathroom. One thing I noticed that I didn't see in any of the other places, in the bathroom, the shower head is in the middle of the wall where most of them are at one end, and the seat that you sit on is at the other end. This one was in the center, the seat came out from the end, and it was cushioned. It came from the wall and wound around to the front of the shower. It just seemed to me like it would be so much easier for the patient rather than to have the seat at one end and the shower at the other end. So, I thought that was very nice. The living room was big enough for your couch, TV, and computer. You could put a small table and a couple of chairs. They have nice kitchen cupboards. They said it was designed by a group of doctors, the staff said that's who owns it. The staff who assisted me, Cindy, was very nice. She said they had washers and dryers with the main price that you pay. They have housekeeping, plus, they do your towels and bedding, and you do your own laundry unless you can't or don't want to, and that's $50 a month. I went down and looked at the washers and dryers, you don't have to pay to use them. They're part of what you paid for your apartment, and the soap comes with it. The soap is already in a machine. You just push a button, and it's added to the washing machine. So, all you have to do is push the button and drop your clothes in. You have all the room numbers and they have them on every floor, and you pick out your room number off this board, it's magnetic, and you put it on the washer, that tells everyone whose clothes are in that washer. I thought that was a very nice thing. Instead of one big dining room, they have small ones on each floor. So, you don't all have to eat it in a huge room, which makes it nice if some people don't like big crowds. It makes it closer for them rather than having to come downstairs if they're way upstairs. They have doctors that come in and all, and they have nurses that will come in. My brother's a diabetic, so they would come in and give him his shots and check his diabetes every day. Just down around the corner, about half a block from the university, she said, there's a fire department, in case you need an ambulance. I noticed next door there were doctor's offices and an urgent care center. So, everything is very close by. They had a bus, plus they had a van that would take them to doctor appointments and things. They'd take them to the grocery store and different places. It's only about a mile from I-75, and it's right there by all four corners where all the shopping malls are. Everything was very convenient. It was very clean, they had high ceilings and wide aisles. It's very bright and cheery.

DeSoto Palms Assisted Living Community was beautiful. It's a great place. We were very impressed. We took pictures and spoke to the administrator. Everybody was great. The facility itself was nice. The rooms were nice. It's just not affordable. The facility was clean and well maintained. The administrator was over the top. She was great. It's a wonderful place.

We went to DeSoto Palms Assisted Living Community. The sales director was very personable, she sat my father down and asked him a lot of questions just to get to know him first, and what he thought he would like or wouldn't like about moving to assisted living. She took us on a tour of three or four types of units that they offer, dining rooms, activity rooms, movie rooms, and introduced them to concierge staff and some of the other staff. So it was a good tour, she spent a lot of time with them. The rooms were very nice, very clean, and had good lighting. The dining areas are very nice. They're homier. The unique thing about this facility is that they have three floors, but they keep the floors almost like separate little communities. They don't have one giant dining room for the entire place. They have a separate meeting and lounge areas on each floor. So all of the three floors are kind of like their own little community. So for some people that aren't going to be comfortable dealing with larger numbers, this is a more comfortable style for people like that. They have activity rooms, they have card games, and they have happy hours. They have music, entertainment, crafts. Yeah, lots of activities, they go shopping, go to lunch, that kind of thing.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We took my mother to DeSoto Palms Assisted Living Community. It had a comfortable feeling and is homey. She has only been there for four days. The staff are very responsive, very friendly, and very helpful. The food is delicious. Right now, activities are minimal because of Covid. The place is very clean, and it is very close to my home.

I currently have family at this facility and I can understand the limitations associated with life under the coronavirus. However today is Thanksgiving Day and my parents had turkey and mashed potatoes with no vegetables and it was served on paper plates with plastic cutlery. Given the lockdowns that this population has had to endure over the past year, it is not too much to ask to provide a warm, familial holiday special environment for your residents. Desert was a choice of 2 types of pie that came in a box with a plastic fork. This is completely unacceptable and given the costs for this facility the quality of services including culinary should be much greater. Your facility has lost double digit numbers of residents in the past year and will continue to do so unless you improve your service.

DeSoto Palms was the one we liked the least. It's a thumbs down. It was the worst community we saw. Every other place that we went was bright, sunny and airy, but we couldn't wait to get out of there. It was horrible. They didn't have a dining room, and it was more like a hospital. We had set up an appointment there, but when we walked in, nobody knew we were coming. I would never put anybody there. We looked at every place to see if the people seemed happy, but with this one, it was very down.

Everything at DeSoto Palms is great The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, and the administration is extremely helpful. We have numerous activities here in the building, they take us on excursions at least once week, and they have entertainment come in for cocktail hour on Fridays. The only thing that is lacking is a swimming pool. We have a dining room, a laundry, and sitting areas on each floor.

I moved into Desoto Palms because of the location and size. We can sit outside in the sun, and a lot of people play bingo. They serve three meals a day and have a library, a game room, activities room, living room, a beauty salon, and laundry. The staff is quick to respond, always pleasant, and smiling. They anticipate your needs and will provide transportation for your doctors' appointments. However, they have very rigid meal time.

I visited DeSoto Palms. It was nice, seemed OK, and had a lot of nice apartments. It was kind of closed-up and quiet. We only saw one room. The staff was OK. It was just an OK place. I don't think I'd be comfortable there. It seemed cold. The price was ridiculous. For respite care, a place to put her when we have to go away, you have to do seven days at $185 a day, and if you don't stay 7 days, you still have to pay the full amount. If I only needed to put her there for two days, I'd have to pay for seven days. That's almost $1,200, so that kind of ruins my vacation. They're very nice, but it was quiet. It was fine. The lady who walked us around was very nice and friendly.

I thought DeSoto was lovely and it would be my first choice. The grounds are very well-kept, the interior is very attractive, and actually they’re redoing all of it. The staff was very helpful, and you didn’t feel she was trying to sell you something. It is independent living but you can have service which is what we will do. The dining is very lovely, they have a real chef, and the menu looked interesting. Some of units have kitchens of different sizes, some are full, some kitchenettes. The floor plans are varied and you would find what you are looking for there.

I am a friend or relative of resident

This facility is relatively new and is well appointed with nice rooms and common areas. Unfortunately I found the management to be somewhat unprofessional and not extremely experienced regarding their approach to providing true assistance. My elderly father stayed there for a week trial stay earlier in the year and we were marketed several times to have him come back. We moved him in several months later when we were able to convince him that he should not be living by himself. Despite the fact that the staff had plenty of opportunity to observe him during his trial stay and that they had an evaluation form from his doctor indicating that he had early dementia, no extra effort was made on their part to get him oriented and into a routine in a new, unfamiliar setting. While he would become temporarily disoriented, when I visited him, he would be able to figure out where he was and self-correct (for example, head down the correct corridor towards his room). Rather than take some remedial actions to help him settle in, they quickly labeled him as someone that was inappropriate for their facility and told us he could no longer stay there after only a few weeks.

DeSoto Palms had nice rooms, but the only one they get on Medicaid is a shared room with a shared bathroom. My mother wanted her own bathroom. Their dining room was like hotel-restaurant dining. They had the same basic activities, i.e., card playing, bingo, trips, and going out to eat.

DeSoto Palms was lovely. It was like a hotel. The rooms and the lobby were beautiful. Their dining area was like eating in a 5-star hotel. I really liked that. However, my brother decided that he needed more care than what they could offer because they had nurses there, but they were like 7 to 7. They would put you in bed, but there's nobody there at night until the morning expect for the resident manager, who was always there, and my brother might need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. So, it was not an appropriate facility for him, even though I liked it.

While in the area, we made a stop at the DeSoto Palms Assisted Living Community. Even though we didn't have an appointment, the staff was friendly and accommodating. We had been looking at options for my friend's mother. The main grounds had nice seating areas to relax by. We liked the way the main area was decorated with fresh flowers. We got to see the diverse staff and residents - which seemed to include people at various levels of ambulation. The staff pointed out that residents are regularly invited to participate in everything there is to offer - from outings to indoor games, films and reading groups. Staff seemed to be willing to accommodate any resident need. The nicely appointed rooms were all fresh and seemed newly decorated. The spacious community rooms were well kept and homey. There was a variety of types of food available - for example, meal choices ranged from a complete meal to snacks or lighter fare, for those who wanted it. Every dietary concern seemed to be well addressed. The snacks also looked very good, from fresh vegetables to fruit and hard boiled eggs. Every effort is made to ensure that all residents are taken care of nutritionally. The facility encourages family members to visit regularly and participate in some of the annual activities, such as barbeques and holiday parties. Staff appeared to make every effort to ensure that the residents were both safe and comfortable in this living environment.
