Sarasota is a waterside city that is quite attractive for seniors. In fact, U.S. News ranks it as America’s top place to retire. Sarasota is the county seat of Sarasota County, which features numerous parks and beaches. Seniors can enjoy those along with the Sarasota Farmers Market and the Sarasota Film Festival. Museums abound as well, including the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature and Selby Gardens. Galleries and performance venues add appeal for art- and music-loving seniors.

Sarasota’s population is 58,285. Seniors age 65 and older make up 27.4% of that number. Those seniors have access to the highly rated Sarasota Memorial hospital and its health care system.

According to the 2019 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, in Sarasota, in-home care costs $4,576 per month and home health aide costs $4,671 per month, on average. Those cost slightly more than the national averages of $4,290 and $4,385, respectively.

Note: Home care cost data was not available for Sarasota, so data for the North Port Area — which encompasses Sarasota, North Port and Bradenton — was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Sarasota area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Sarasota:

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
