"My family has experienced a traumatic injury. I was attempting to do it all by myself and finally reached the point of being overwhelmed. I contacted Right at Home and the Owner of he company was at my house that day! All the little and big things I could not find the time to do are now taken care of. Now I have the assurance that I can leave my home and know that I have an experienced, licensed professional taking care of my family. Always on time, honest, professional, trustworthy, hard working, articulate and caring. I was pleasently surprised to have Right at Home's Director of Quality Assurance drop by for a visit to make sure I was getting what I needed and in such a manner that was safe and of the highest standard. I feel now that Right at Home is an extension of my family. I trust them. I need them. They are here for me. "

"I have a person from Right at Home that comes to the home and assists me with things I need to get done every day. She takes me to the doctor, picks up prescriptions, helps me with groceries, and cooks lunch for me if I need it. She also does my wash, and she changes my bed once a week. She is excellent. I've arranged for them to bill straight to my insurance company ,and it seems to be working out very well. I am very satisfied with them."

"I used Homewell for my mom who lived in FL and I'm in California. They kept me updated with an online portal for the schedule and they always called to update. I was nervous because of a previous experience with another agency but the Homewell was great and stayed with my mom for a long time until she passed. They even sent us flowers when she did, I am grateful for their help."

"I've been using SYNERGY HomeCare of Bradenton for six to eight weeks now. It's working pretty well, but I've had to put them on hold this past week and a half. The only drawback for me is, I need to be there to supervise them because I don't always get the same person. They only come once a week, and it's not a consistent thing, but everybody they've sent has been just great and following directions and doing what I ask. In the beginning, they were a great help in just getting me reorganized and on top of things so that I could manage a lot better for myself. We started with three times a week, and I'm down to just once a week, which is enough to just keep the household running. They're here for three hours. I just have someone to kind of come in and keep things going, make sure the laundry's done, keep my refrigerator organized, and I have them do pre-prep work for me so that I can just go to the refrigerator and pull things out. The agency is great. Whatever I need, they're fine, as long as I give them the agreed-upon notice. If I need to cancel or change something, they've been right on top of it. There's never been a problem. You have to be fair to them because I can't cancel like that morning. As long as I do what's fair, they've been right on top of it, very responsive, never complained, and never acted like it was an inconvenience. It's been easy, and it's a good group to work with. Everyone that they've sent me has been wonderful, cheerful, and eager to do whatever they're asked. They were the most flexible on hours."

"We had SYNERGY HomeCare of Venice for my father. The agency and the caregivers were great. The owner was fantastic, and he really came through to help us out. Their CNAs were wonderful. They would help mom to bathe my father and change him, help her roll him every position, they would change the bedding, and they offered to help her with anything she needed in terms of light cleaning. They provided a lot of comfort for her and companionship. They were so helpful and reassuring her that she was caring for him well. It was overall great care for my father and also big help for my mother's peace of mind. They were very caring and compassionate."

"My sister and I trusted dad when he said he didn’t need help. That was till I received a phone call that my dad had fallen. I talked to a few different companies and felt good about Griswold. We used home care for almost 9 months and Griswold was a lifesaver. We needed care immediately and Griswold had a caregiver at my dad’s home the next morning. I am forever grateful to the Griswold team. "

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Venice:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior Friendship Centers of Venice | (941) 584-0075 | 2350 Scenic Drive, Venice, FL 34293 | The Venice campus of the Senior Friendship Centers offers several services relevant to seniors. Case managers can arrange forms of help such as housekeeping for older adults, while the Friendship at Home volunteer program sends visitors to keep isolated seniors company. Home-delivered meals and caregiver support are also available, as are one-time legal consultations and assistance with federal benefits programs. |
| Venice Area Mobile Meals, Inc. | (941) 488-1889 | 920 Tamiami Trail South, Venice, FL 34285 | VAMMI is a nonprofit organization that may be of assistance to homebound seniors. The organization’s volunteers deliver lunches six times per week, excluding Sundays but including holidays. Individuals whose physical or mental disabilities prevent them from preparing meals on their own are eligible. Each meal is roughly 800 calories, and diabetes-friendly dessert options are available. Meals are $5 apiece. |
| Sarasota Office of Housing and Community Development | (941) 951-3640 | 111 South Orange Avenue, Sarasota, FL 34236 | The OHCD helps Sarasota County residents, including those in Venice, afford home upgrades and necessary fixes. It runs several programs, including two loan offerings that are based on the homeowner’s equity in the home. A third loan program is designed for when the homeowner’s equity is low, and it offers a maximum of $20,000 for repairs to critical home components, such as the electrical system and roof. There are also programs meant to ease utility payments and to make a home more accessible. |
| Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida | (239) 652-6900 | 2830 Winkler Avenue, Suite 112, Fort Myers, FL 33916 | The AAASWFL is a multifaceted source of aid for older adults. Examples of its services include the Elder Helpline, which can point seniors toward helpful information and resources, and SHINE, which makes counselors available to answer questions about Medicare and related topics. Another program of note is Home and Community-Based Care, designed to make it more feasible for seniors to remain in their homes. |
| Catholic Charities Financial Aid | (941) 355-4680 | 1219 16th Street West, Bradenton, FL 34205 | The Catholic Charities organization operates a financial assistance program that can help older adults and families with critical expenses. Specifically, Sarasota County residents are eligible for one-time economic aid, which is meant to go toward rent or mortgage payments, utility bills, prescription medicine and additional important expenses. The program’s goal is to help individuals avoid poverty and maintain self-sufficiency. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
