Dad moved into the Heritage Oaks of Englewood. He’s getting really good hands-on care for the level of care that he needs. The place is very comfortable for him, nice-sized rooms, nice-sized bath area also, and it’s relatively new, it’s only about four years old. It’s very nice. The staff is very hands-on and they communicate well with me to let me know how he’s doing, typically once a week, and I really like them a lot. They have bingo at least three times a week, they also have a gym/rehab center now that they just opened for the residents, they have a cafeteria which is open at two different seatings three times a day, so that’s really good. They can choose what seating they want.

Brookdale Rotonda assisted living seemed a little bit more laid back for me. It was homey and very nice and they were quite complete with everything they had. It was just the feeling that I got there, it was more reserved and it was too quiet. Everybody was just sitting around and I didn’t get to see too many activities of people participating there. My current place is just a little bit livelier to me. Brookdale was a little institutionalized, it was just a little too quiet. The residents were just sitting around, just talking to each other very quietly in the different places where you could sit outside. In my current place, they’re sort of livelier and it makes you feel good. I’m going to be 89 years old in another week and I need that happiness.
Also, the minute I walked into Brookdale, out came this lady and she’s got two dogs and they’re barking. I thought, "Oh, my God, if I had a room next to barking dogs. It would be a no". The staff were very nice and were very good though. They showed me everything.

My parents are in Aston Gardens right now. The management treats them very poorly. Like Mom and Dad got their breakfast and they asked for prune juice. They are allowed to pick up six drinks for several days, and the people said, "No, you can’t have six, you can only have four." These people who go there are paying big bucks, like close to $5,000 a month and they’re told that they can’t have two extra glasses of prune juice? When they first moved in there was furniture in the lobby that had been so worn it was threadbare. There were weeds around the pool. My 92-year-old father was so disgusted with it that he finally weeded around the pool himself. If you talked to the management about it they would actually say to people, "If you don’t like it here, you can go somewhere else," instead of fixing the problems. The management instead of fixing things would say, "Oh, of course." They take it personally and they don’t accommodate the people there. They joke to themselves saying, "Oh we’re the children, we’re treated like children," but for people who are paying this kind of money they don’t accommodate them. They go above and beyond to help the independent living people. Here, it’s like a battle to get anything done. The umbrellas at the pool are supposed to be put up every morning, but they’re not. These are seniors so they complain that the umbrellas aren’t up. The solution to that was they took the umbrellas away. These are old people who need the umbrellas to sit under because it’s hot out. But then when management came to check everything, the umbrellas were out and opened.
The food, before COVID, was a five, but now it’s a thee. Their apartment would be a five; it was lovely. The amenities, the pool and all that, would be a five. The dining room staff is a five and management is a two. The activities director is wonderful, she is a five. The value for money is a three, but housekeeping is minimal.

We spent extensive time and energy researching different ASL communities for our Mom. We chose Tuscan Gardens primarily for the safety, access to walking/exercise & food. My Mom has been a resident for two months and we are thrilled with all of the above as well as the staff, nursing accommodations, and the great environment set up for the residents to spend time together. Our Mom’s health has improved considerably since her move to Tuscan Garden – partially due to the inhouse Physical Therapy and the consistent care.
The room is spacious enough for her as a single resident. All of the staff greet and care for my mom in a caring manner.
Oh, I almost forgot the quality of the food is excellent. They offer an ‘standard menu’ that is available daily and then two daily features for the residents to choose from. The food is fresh and a good variety is offered. My mom does say that the service is slow sometimes, but I think that is to be expecting during this time of lean employees.

Placing a family member in assisted living and/or memory care is difficult. Our family feels we made the very besdecision possible when we chose Banyan. Their concept of mixing assisted living and memory care residents for all meals and activities is an unusual one and one of the many reasons we chose them. My sister suffers from Parkinson’s and though she has delusions, they are sporadic, so that 80% of the time she is "compos mantis" as the doctors call it. At Banyan, she gets great assisted living care, but when she needs it, also great memory care.
The buildings and grounds are gorgeous, more nearly like a botaqnical garden than a gated facility. (You can hardly see the tall fence because it is covered and concealed by plants and trees. Every room opens directly onto one of the lush gardens so there are no long, drab halls as found in most assisted living places.
We have found the staff to be helpful, responsive to sister’s needs, and cheerfully dedicatee to the care of their residents.
Of course there are problems from time to time, but most often they are caused by the diseased condition of my sister rather than by anything staff could control.
Every Sunday, there is an outdoor barbeque with a choice of entrees, a singer to entertain and Florida sunshine. This is just one example of the many activities offered (every day) for residents who are able to participate: bingo, gin rummy, trivial pursuits, organ concerts etc. All good..
There is no perfect solution to this family problem except that there be no problem. But given the circumstances we know we made the best decision possible when we chose a Banyan Residence in Venice.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Englewood
In Englewood and the rest of Florida, assisted living and other long-term care communities are governed by the Agency for Health Care Administration. This agency screens care home staff and protects residents from fraud and abuse.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Englewood
- Health care is easily accessible here; Englewood has 272 physicians per 100,000 people compared to the national average of 210 per 100,000 people.
- Englewood has warm weather year-round, with no snow in the winter and more sunny days than the national median, at 257 compared to 205.
- Florida is very tax-friendly toward seniors and is one of the few states that charges no personal income tax.
