I wanted my dad placed in a home that was very much like his home and Select Group Home is like a house with caregivers in it. The amount of caregivers to patients is low, with only a couple of patients per caregiver, so it's more of a hands-on quality. You know that they're right there all the time. My dad was most comfortable there because he felt like it was his house and he had a lot of people that he could talk to. The place is more social and less institutional. They only have 14 total residents and there are two different houses. One is for Azheimer's and one is for the other type of care. My dad is on the memory care part and he shares a room with another gentleman but I think there are also people in there with a private room. They have three meals a day. For activities they do coloring. They'll take all of the people out who want to color outside and they do coloring activities. They have planned activities every day for the residents but it's up to them whether they want to participate or not. They don't have to and they're not made to do them. They also have a yard that they could go out to. It's completely fenced so they can wander anywhere they want to, and they don't feel like they're a prisoner. The staff is always laughing, very patient, and very caring. That's what I loved about it. There's nothing that will change a negative attitude like the laughter of a caregiver. It changes the residents' focus if they're in a bad mood so I appreciate that they were able to do that, almost like taking care of a toddler. Sometimes you have to wait around or distract them instead of confronting them. My dad went in there with ankles the size of an elephant. No matter what I did, I could not get it to go down and he was on Lasix medication. When he went in there, within two weeks, he had no more swelling problems and he's off of Lasix now. It's amazing that somebody there was aware of what was happening to him and did something. It is such a blessing to me.

My mom has been in Select Group Home for a month now. The place is beautiful. The residents are well cared for. There's Veteran's Day. They have nurses every day. They have decent staff. It's surprisingly different from what it looks like on the outside. Some of the rooms are shared. It's a homey place, a very relaxed setting, and the folks are well-tended. The staff is big enough to take care of everybody in my opinion. They do bingo and cards with the people, they have a TV room, and they can all go out and watch movies. With regards to food, they cook anything they want.

I went to visit Select Group Home. The person that gave the tour seemed to be the owner and she's very friendly. It's very much a home environment, which I thought was nice. They have them all sit at a large table together and they serve them their meals. It's a very small setting. They had individual rooms just like a home, she has like two homes on the ground, and it was very tidy. She said they do bingo and some activities for the residents there. I would be fine to have my loved one there, it just depends on what kind of setting you want.

My parent was in the Select Group Homes. It's a very small facility, they barely have nine or ten patients. If someone is looking for a small family atmosphere, that's a good fit for them. They cook home-based meals, Jamaican kinds of meals. I don't have anything bad to say about them. He was in a shared room with twin beds, the rooms were not very big. They have a TV, and the good thing about them is they provide the furniture. You don't have to bring your own because it's already included. Their price is extremely reasonable. You can have a single room if you want to pay a little more, so they have both single and shared rooms. The staff members were fine, they were very nice.

What I like about Select Group Home is that it has an actual home setting. There were four bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and so on. It's a very small community with about nine residents at the most, so there's better personal and one-on-one care. There are always three nurses for 24 hours. The grounds are nice and they had a nice little screened-in porch. The location is also very easy to find. They do home cooked meals for three meals a day. The place is very clean and did not smell like they just cleaned it right before we came. I was impressed with that because most places would just be cleaned right before you come. It didn't smell like they bleached everything to make it appear clean. A lot of their patients are bedridden, but they don't just leave them in bed. They bring them out to sit and watch TV and play games or they throw a small birthday party when there's an occasion to. The price is a little high, but for what we get, we're satisfied.
