What to Consider About Assisted Living in Hilton

Hilton, New York, which has been called the “Little Village with a Big Heart," is located 14 miles away from the sprawling city of Rochester. The city is home to nearly 6,000 people, roughly 11 percent of whom are over the age of 65. There is one assisted living facility within the village, but seniors who are willing to venture out farther will find another 16 in Rochester. In Hilton, as in all of New York, assisted living facilities are regulated by the Department of Health

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Hilton

  • New York residents living in Hilton get to keep all of their pension and Social Security benefits. The state does not tax this income so seniors keep the full check.
  • One benefit of living in the small town of Hilton is the low cost of living. The cost of housing is much lower than the national average and state average. This benefits seniors because facilities can keep fees low. Health costs are also lower than state and national averages, which is another boon for seniors with health problems.
  • Since Hilton is located in far Western New York near the Canadian border, it does experience cold weather. The town sees an average of 78 inches of snow a year. This can hinder travel in case of an emergency. High temperatures reach an average of 81 degrees and lows reach temperatures of 19 degrees. Extreme temperatures can be dangerous for seniors.
  • Hilton has excellent air quality. On a scale of one as the worse and 100 as the best, the National Air Toxics Assessment gives Hilton an air quality rating of 83. This means the air is less likely to cause or trigger breathing issues and has a low cancer risk.
  • The Town of Parma Senior Center, which also serves all Hilton residents, offers plenty of activities for seniors. There are also free meals and trips. Seniors can get a ride to and from the center for a small fee.
  • The Hilton area has no facilities from which to choose in the event of a medical emergency or illness. The nearest major hospital is Unity Hospital located eight miles from Hilton in Rochester. Rochester also has a few other hospitals, including Rochester General, Highland Hospital and Strong Memorial Hospital.
