Temple Hills is a suburb of Washington, DC, and has a population of a little over 8,000 people, about 13% of whom are seniors. It’s among the more cost-friendly places to live near the nation’s capital, and some types of retirement income are exempt from taxation at the state level, which may benefit those with budgetary considerations.
Temple Hills is also home to numerous assisted living facilities. These residential facilities accommodate those who need an extra hand with non-medical daily living activities such as grooming and bathing. Along with personal care, these facilities provide a range of convenient services such as meals and snacks served daily, recreational activities, housekeeping and laundry, all of which promote a maintenance-free lifestyle. The 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey reports that seniors in Temple Hills pay an average of $5,948 per month for this type of care.
This guide provides more information on assisted living costs in Temple Hills and how residential care compares to other senior care options. The guide also breaks down some of the benefits and drawbacks of living in Temple Hills and highlights some of the state-mandated rules that assisted living facilities must follow.

I liked Henson Creek Assisted Living. They just built new units, which are private units for the assisted living area. I was shown the multiple housing units, but I was more interested in the single units, so there could still be a little privacy, and a small amount of independence for my father. They had activities and I was able to see when they have the nurse come in to do the medication, to see the area where they do that, in the sunroom and the TV area where they kind of congregate, and where they eat their meals. So I was kind of pleased with that. She said that in the new rooms they’re going to provide the furniture, which would be a bed, a reclining chair, a dresser, and a television. And then each of the independent rooms would have their own bathrooms, and that was another thing that I know that my father would appreciate is having that space that he would not have to share in that being a common area.
Diane was very pleasant, very helpful. She was able to answer my questions and actually give me information that I probably wasn’t thinking of, my questions that I didn’t know to ask. And she was able to let me know about the dietitian and the food plan. She was able to tell me about how they have an elevator for those in the older units, which are the ones that I did get to tour. They have like two levels and they have like an older elevator. But then she showed me how all of these residents get transported. They always have somebody with them when they’re in the common area where everybody is. So I was happy about that part. I think that’s about it. Her demeanor was very caring and nurturing, so I felt very comfortable with how she related to some of the patients as well as the staff. It was a pleasant experience. I was very happy once I had gone because it was the first one. But she made it a pleasant experience, and comfortable.

I have no complaints about the staff. They immediately call me if something is wrong with my mother-in-law and let me know what she needs. They have a bus, and they take the people out. For Mother’s Day or something like that, they invite the family. My mother-in-law didn’t give me any complaints about the food.
She has a roommate, but there’s plenty of space in there. The house is immaculate. The bathrooms are clean.

Sunrise of Arlington is a very small facility, so my dad can navigate the whole thing very easily. The staff is fantastic. They are very friendly. They’re very professional. They knew us and they knew my dad instantly. We were very, very pleased with the staff. The apartment is one room. It has a mini fridge and a bathroom with a shower, but it does not have what I would call a kitchenette. We ate there one time, they made us a bacon cheeseburger and fries, and it was tasty. With my dad, some of the food he has liked, but other things he hasn’t liked as much. But they certainly have a nice range of different types of food. If you don’t like what the main course is that day, you can order other items or ask for something different, and they’re willing to work with you on that.
For activities, they have a weekly field trip, and then they have other activities within the facility. One time I was there, a violinist and a flutist came in and they were playing music. I’ve seen them playing bingo. We’re out of town right now, but my son went and visited him, and they were setting up to have a barbecue outside with chairs. They have a pretty landscaped area outside. When it comes to value for money, it’s worth it. It’s just one building and it’s small. This was perfect for my dad and his ability to get around on his own. He doesn’t need assistance this way. Any time I call, the concierge at the front desk knows exactly where my dad is. So, we’re very happy with it. If they’re looking for a small facility that has more intimate care, it’s perfect.

I liked Sunrise at Bluemont Park. They had more outdoor areas than the others, but I didn’t feel that my parents are going to be using that because they were both incapable of moving themselves around. The layout was nice, the facility was nice, and the people were nice. They have separate buildings and it’s more of like garden style apartment layout rather than just one single building that’s five or six stories high. There’s only a bunch of two-story or three-story little buildings spread out. They seemed to have a nice food selection. The staff was were very helpful, and they followed up with me. They were great. It’s got access to the parks and trails. For somebody that’s in an assisted living situation that can move around by themselves, it would be wonderful.

They’re very expensive, but they don’t tell you that upfront. They discuss everything else, and then they get to the money. I would just like to be informed of the price before I sit there for an hour. The place was very clean; when I was there, no one was cleaning the floors or anything, but everyone was just really nice.
The rooms were decent sized, but they’re pretty small for what you pay. You don’t really have a view of anything. The rooms are very small compared to how much they charge you. They have a gym, a small courtyard, and a library.

The staff at Russell Residence was very friendly. We spoke with the owner. She was very passionate about running a good home there. There was a lot of effort that was put in to ensure that it was comfortable for the residents. I think they had probably more room available for private rooms versus doubling up. There were renovations that they had started. The residents seemed to be pleased with the rooms that they were in, especially the private ones.
What I didn’t like was it was on two levels with stairs. They had one of those chair lifts in place, but I still didn’t like that. It kind of gave me an impression that sometimes folks weren’t able to totally interact with each other because of those that may have difficulty climbing stairs or whatever. It’s not against the owner. It’s just the way the house was designed. The owner was very pleasant. She followed up, and she was very accommodating and informative. I didn’t have much interaction with the staff, other than just passing them.
