"I visited The Lodge at Marlton, an independent living community. The person I met was very kind, polite, and patient. I called them saying I was running late and she said it was fine and they would be waiting for me. I was specifically interested in a 2-bedroom and 2-bath apartment, and she took me to the ones available to see. I noticed that there was a wheelchair sitting in the room and the shelves on the closet were lowered to accommodate the person who had lived there who was in a wheelchair. The room was clean and had a hardwood floor. She said this one is more experimental and that not all the rooms have hardwood floors and most of them have carpets. She showed me the amenities, too. They had an exercise room and a large sitting area for the residents to come and chat. It's an established place, built in 2009. Within walking distance, very close to it, were all kinds of shops and a little strip mall area. They have a major grocery store, too, and if you walk a little bit further, there is a McDonald's. It was quite convenient. If you don't have transportation then it would still be okay because you have so many things right there within walking distance. They didn't have a swimming pool or a jacuzzi. They do have a mailing room where your packages are brought in, which a lot of people are now doing like the Amazon thing so it's very convenient. There's no one walking around patrolling but they have a security camera. You also have 24-hour maintenance available. It's a community for 62 and over. They do not provide any kind of assistance so you have to be independent. That's not to say you couldn't have someone come in to assist your loved one if need be, but they don't provide that service and that's something people need to know. The carpet in the hallway needs to be replaced. There was no mention of food, so they probably don't provide any kind of food. You can rent a washer and dryer for $37 a month, or you can bring your own in. They pay for the water but you have to pay for electricity and everything else there uses electricity. You have to walk your trash down, too. Each floor has a trash room where you have a chute and just dump your bags down. You have to take your recyclables down, I think, to the first floor. Overall, they need to spruce up the place a little bit. It did look aged and could use some upgrades."

"I visited the independent living community of Visionary Square in Washington. I like that they had a shopping center right there for everything you wanted. They have grocery stores and some carry-outs. It's also near the subway station. My bank is right there, too. I can look out my window and see it along with the grocery store and the carry-out place, so it has things close by that would have been perfect for me. I can go out and walk right to each one of them with no problem, but I also have a car, and I don't want anything to happen to my car in the middle of the night because things happen in DC. I went inside, and it was small, but it was nice. It was also clean, so it was okay. I could have lived there. The only thing that turned me off was the parking. They provide parking spaces, but the few spots get filled up. I get off work at 1 in the morning, so coming home that late, everybody's already home. That means I'm not going to get a good parking space, so it was not good for me. The people were a little rude at the rental office. They were doing something else, and I kind of caught them off guard because I got there early. The person there told the maintenance guy to take me up and give me a tour of the apartment. The person who gave the tour was really polite and was very helpful. He stopped doing what he was doing because he was asked to take me up there for the tour. The apartment was small, but it was livable, and I could have managed with it. There was also no trash lying around. They just need to improve the parking. I'm looking for a building where I can park in a garage. Unfortunately, they don't offer that."

"My mother moved to Cogir of West End Alexandria's memory care. It's a very beautiful community. The attendance of the nurses is very helpful, and the support staff is very supportive. The director is very welcoming and very friendly. The buck stops with him. He takes action immediately if you need something. I haven't had a complaint, but in my experience of trying to get what my mother needed, I can see that he's very receptive and quick to implement what it was that she needed. The staff he gave me to deal with was also very receptive and very professional. I'm very pleased with them. My mother's room is good. I've seen the food and the menu, and they look very healthy. They have activity after activity. Every hour, they're changing and doing something with the people. They take field trips, art sessions, and music sessions. They do let the residents watch TV, but it's not a situation where they're sitting in front of the TV all day. When they watch TV, it's usually a movie in the evening. They don't have the time to watch TV during the day because they're moving them around to different activities."

"The tour at Resilient Care Assisted Living was fine. It's in a nice neighborhood, the neighborhood was quiet. They had a stairlift that would take the residents up and down the stairs. I think all the rooms were shared. And I told them that wouldn't work for my husband. He would need his own room. The biggest thing for me was there were no men there. I said, "Where are all the men? Do you not take men? " And she said, " Yeah, yeah. We take man, we just don't have any." So I wouldn't want him to be the only man there. The place itself was nice. The rooms were decent. One person assisted me, a woman, and she was showing me around. She showed me an example of their menu, which was fine. She did a good job showing me around. She said they had board games. They might go for a walk in the neighborhood, but they let their relatives take them out if they want to go out."

"Harmony at Enterprise was beautiful, and the apartments that they had were very nice. We were very much interested in a pool, which they did not have, so that was one of the downsides of that. But they said that they do have a van that goes to a swimming pool in Glendale, I believe. They had a beauty salon and a gym. They had housekeeping once a week, and then they would provide one meal a day. The staff who gave the tour was very good and she answered all the questions that we had. She was kind of bubbly and she was interested in what we were looking for. She seemed upfront about everything."

"I liked the brightness, the spaciousness, and the situation of the rooms at Harmony at Waldorf. I was very impressed with all of it. The lady that showed us around was the sales consultant and she was excellent. The facilities seemed very nice. They have a movie theater, a happy hour place, and activities planned for them (to which they would be adding more to that)."

"Facility is incredible. Under new ownership and management. Building has been completely renovated and has new central air (other facility we visited was window unit) and rooms are mostly huge 1 bedroom units! Was less expensive that small studio units at property down the road. Chef cooked us a spectacular lunch during our tour. Walking distance to everything. Top notch gem and best value in town. "

"I found the Paragon Assisted Living Potomac House Communities for my father. It's a group home. He moved in and he loves it -- the best place he's ever lived. This was perfect for him. The staff is great, my father feels very special there, it's very small, only eight residents, so it's very individualized. It's like they really care. He has the same, consistent people all the time. They have a chef who comes in every day and prepares the food. It's a brand-new facility, it's not even a year old. It's well-maintained. They clean the room every day. They have nice, big, open hallways. They have minimal activities, and they could probably do better for people who have the ability to do stuff. They're a great alternative to a bigger facility."

"My mother has very limited vision, so she needed a small environment. She has a very spacious 1-bedroom at Chesterbrook Residences. She moved from a small home, so I was concerned about her ability to adjust to a smaller environment. The apartments are wonderful and she's very comfortable. Given her limited vision, it's really very appropriate for her. I was able to paint the color of our choosing and moved in all the furniture that she wanted. The food is fabulous. My mother raves about the food, especially the soup. It's a stable staff, there's not a lot of turnover, and they're very friendly and very caring. They have trips to the Kennedy Center, to restaurants, the local food market, and shopping trips. There's also movie nights, game nights, exercise classes, and they have people coming in playing the piano or a professional dancer who comes in once a month and dances with the residents. My mom is much happier. "

"I like the fact that Angel Living looked friendly. It was like a household, like a family kind of situation. Everybody was in their little areas. The least part is, I wanted a little bit more space for my brother to get around because he's going to be in a wheelchair. They had space, but it was kind of too narrow for him to get around. The staff seemed to be very nice. I only spoke with the one who gave me the tour. The rest of them were engaged, doing whatever they had to do. The cleanliness was great. Everybody was calmly looking at the television and sitting around, so the atmosphere was OK."
