Severna Park is a census-designated place in Anne Arundel County, bordered on two sides by the Severn and Magothy rivers. According to the 2020 census, 15.9% of its almost 40,000 residents are aged 65 and older. The area’s appeal lies in its affordable health care costs, low crime rates, comfortable climate and low-cost transportation. There’s also an impressive number of parks, some offering opportunities to picnic and take gentle strolls, while others, such as Lake Waterford Park, are more natural – attracting lovers of fishing and hiking.
Assisted living in Severna Park typically costs around $5,000, which is average for Maryland, and $700 per month more than what the typical American pays. For the fee, seniors retain their autonomy while deferring some daily chores, such as housekeeping, cooking and medication management, to trained staff. Assisted living communities encourage participation in shared activities but seniors are free to come and go as they wish, providing them with a mostly independent lifestyle with the addition of help when they need it.
This guide considers the pros and cons of living in Severna Park and reveals typical assisted living costs in the region. It also lists some senior-friendly resources.

Spring Arbor of Severna Park is brand new, and it’s well taken care of. They have everything you could want for their patients available to them. They had a large Valentine’s Day party, and they had everything that you could need, live music, and a nice meal. It’s just very nice. They work hard to make their patients happy.
They have nursing staff available 24 hours a day, and they have physicians that come in daily. All of the staff, all of the people that the patients need, come to the house. They don’t have to take the patient out of the house unless they need to go to the hospital. All the rooms have a refrigerator, a sink, and a microwave.
The staff who showed me around was great. She was very knowledgeable, she likes the place and she showed it off very well. She answered all our questions and more.

They’re not as new as the other place, but they’ve kept it up very nicely. They have nice walking paths on the campus there. The rooms were comfortable and pretty decent square footage, except for the closet space. They have an exercise room, and there’s a library. They have the usual things you see in all these places. The place was in good shape. It was well maintained. The floor surfaces were nice. It was a nice enough facility.

We liked Brightview Severna Park. It was an awesome facility. I think we were most impressed with how they train the staff and the staff was invested in the organization, to the point to where we think that they would have given our mother awesome care. They had a higher retention rate of their staffing as well. They had a lot of crafts, activities, the salon, happy hour, and things where the residents can engage together. Another thing we liked about it is that somebody from the assisted living care side would kind of sponsor somebody from one of the other levels (like their middle level). I liked how they interact to help the new residents kind of adjust to being there. They’re very sweet.
We were impressed with them. The only reason that we didn’t go with them initially was that they didn’t have the type of room available that we wanted. They also didn’t have Bridges or intermediate levels. We were very impressed with them though.
The rooms were awesome. We liked the rooms because it seemed more like an apartment. They had the living space, the bedroom, and then the bathroom. All the residents’ rooms have showers, but they also had another room where if you had a resident that preferred to get a bath, they could have a walk-in bath there as well. That was another thing that we liked about it. The dining room was nice and more like an upscale restaurant. We saw some of the residents eating. I didn’t taste it, but it smelled good. They had the movie theater.

My dad spent almost the last year of his life at the Severna Park house. Margaret, Roger, and the entire staff are wonderful, friendly, and caring – they treat each resident as if he/she were their own parent. Each resident has their own room with a private bathroom, but they are encouraged to spend time in the common living area or outside on the deck, as a community, or really as a family. Community meals are like family meals. Even during the pandemic, they have strived to keep things as normal as possible, and have continued to have their daily activities – movie night, pizza day, bingo, crafts, puzzles – as well as church/prayer services. It is not a fancy modern place like some others, but is more like a quaint family home, which my dad felt very comfortable in. The staff-to-resident ratio is much higher than most other places, and ensures that all residents are receiving individualized care.
I know that God led us to their doorstep when our dad needed more care last year, and we are truly blessed that he was able to live out his life in a true household of angles. I pray that God continues to bless Margaret and her staff each and every day.

I toured Brookdale Woodward Estates. I thought it was excellent. It was friendly. It was comprehensive. I got to see many of the residents just going through their day, as well as the facilities and the grounds. So I was happy with all of those things. I felt that they had given me a good impression of what day-to-day life would be like for my mother. They showed me the menus and explained to me how the menus worked. There’s a monthly menu that was published and I was told how the residents choose their meals for the following day, etc., and also about flexibility. I saw the library. I saw several different sorts of recreational rooms, some with television, some without, some quiet spaces, and some spaces for social activities and crafts, like an art studio. So I saw quite a few different things. The staff made the tour, I was impressed. Everyone spoke to me, even people who were taking laundry down the elevator. Very friendly, very warm, and the people who were giving this tour were comprehensive. They discussed a lot of the personal idiosyncrasies that my mother had, as well as showing me how they would address those particular things. The air seems very fresh and clean inside. Everything was clean, and I was very impressed with it.

My mother lived in an assisted living facility prior to moving to Annapolitan Assisted Living, and while we are thankful that her prior facility kept her safe and cared for, her former assisted living experience was no comparison to the wonderful experience she has had at the Annapolitan. My mom has lived here for almost three years and I am always impressed by how professional the staff is, and how kind they are to my mother. Additionally, the activities director always has terrific parties for the residents and the residents’ family and friends, and they take residents on outings to restaurants, parks, and even Bowie Baysox baseball games. During the COVID pandemic, the facility manager was absolutely terrific in balancing the health needs of residents with their emotional need to see family and friends, and implemented common sense precautions to protect residents. The entire staff is top-notch, friendly and caring. If you are looking for a place for yourself or your loved one, the Annapolitan is a terrific choice!

She is their first official resident and she LOVES it there. She cried all the way to the facility that first day … and now she considers it home … which is a huge relief to me. They are very attentive and patient to all her needs and have been very patient with me as well as I navigate the details of having a loved one in a facility.
My mother is bedridden and can’t really walk now. They have made several successful attempts to get her up and in her wheelchair for strolls around the block and to just get her outside on nicer days. I am beyond grateful to them for their care and concern.

The Office of Health Care Quality, a division of the Maryland Department of Health, is responsible for regulating, monitoring and licensing assisted living facilities throughout the state. It also certifies facilities eligible to accept residents who benefit from Medicaid support and Medicare plans.

This strongly suggests that seniors pay less, on average, for their health care treatments in Severna Park.
- Severna Park has one of the better climates in this part of the country, providing its residents with four distinct seasons and temperatures that won’t expose them to nature’s extremities. January is the coldest month — typically 27 degrees, while July is usually a comfortable 88 degrees. Snowfall is half the national average at 14 inches annually and rainfall is around six inches more than normal. Although, it can be argued that the pleasingly green landscape is well worth a little extra rain.
- Although all crime is unwelcome, Severna Park’s crime statistics will be envied by many cities in the state and the country. Property crime is about half the average and violent crime is even less common, with the chances of becoming a victim in Severna Park at 1 in 702. The state average is 1 in 220.
- Several medical facilities serve the residents of Severna Park, such as Millenium Health SVC. The nearest hospital, UM Baltimore Washington Medical Center, is only 15 minutes away in Glen Burnie. U.S. News & World Report ranks it #10 in Maryland. There are also a significant number of therapists, psychiatrists, dentists and counselors who accept patients with Medicare.
- Anne Arundell County provides two types of paratransit services for seniors. The Complementary Paratransit service operates like the fixed route service and covers the same areas. It can transport seniors to locations within three-quarters of a mile of a fixed route stop. The General Paratransit service is for disabled riders with disabilities that stop them from using other forms of transport.
