"I toured The Grand Victorian of Sycamore. It was a very welcoming place, very bright, very clean, and had a lot of options. We had a very extensive visit and met a lot of the staff. We learned a lot of things. They were very helpful. The food wasn't the most delicious, but depends on your taste and what's offered that day. It was nicely done. It was a beautiful facility. It was extremely nice."

"While staff and residents were kind and capable, facilities and amenities were stretched thin. At one point it was found that my great aunt had fallen out of bed in the night and stayed there until morning. While I understand that such accidents happen and that she had not in fact woken up or raised any kind of alarm, I would feel more comfortable had they impemented some kind of routine patrol to check on residents. Further, though it may be cliche to comment, the food was usually unpalatable and bland. Oftentimes my mother and I would bring my great aunt meals instead of the fare that was offered in the home, simply because she disliked it so much. In other facilities I have heard that seasonings are not provided to residents due to an intolerance in some persons there. It would seem to me that allowing residents to season their own food as long as it does not endanger them would be a much preferable alternative to such a ban. Altogether I think that the facility suffered from a lack of funds and maintenance, but overall did the best that it could with what was possible. "

"I like that the apartments at Oak Park Place were spacious. I like the part that they had an underground garage being in Wisconsin where we're at right now, so that's good for the winter months and security as well. I like the fact that they come in and do cleaning twice a month. So that was something. And I believe they said, with your rent, you got one meal, breakfast or something, so that was a lot to take in in one day. And the place overall looked nice and clean. It looks like it's in a nice area in Janesville. The staff seemed courteous and knowledgeable. The amenities were kind of mediocre though."

"My mom was at the Heathers Senior Homes a couple of times For respite care. She was given excellent care from a very caring staff. The food is excellent there. It’s all homemade fresh daily. I will continue to use the Heather senior homes for future respite care for my mother."

"Anam was a beautiful place for my mom to live. She developed dementia at too young of an age, so transitioning to memory care was hard on everyone. The staff made it easier for all of us, including my mom. Their approach to individualized care and creating a real community, honors each resident. From celebrating holidays, birthdays, garden parties to simple gatherings on the secure outdoor patios, my mom found daily joy. Above all, the staff ensured my mom had a healthy quality of life and never felt isolated or alone. We are grateful every day for her care and love seeing how the Anam community lifts up their residents and their families."

"We have placed my mom into Heritage Woods of Rockford assisted living. We chose them because it was close to our homes and she would be able to stay there if she needed a lot more care. We've had really good luck with everybody that works with her there. There have been no issues and all the people have been very nice and communicate with her. She liked it overall when she got there. They're having a little issue right now with the food because they're currently looking for a cook and for people to work. Unfortunately, in this economy right now, it's not an easy task so they're doing the best they can. They have a library and a lot of outdoor spaces. The facility itself is nice. They have a lot of spaces where they can sit and visit on each floor. They do bingo a lot, they have ice cream social days, and they have a minister coming in from different churches. They go take the residents on their bus to local restaurants and local attractions. Right now, I think they'll go to the Apple Orchard in the fall. So, things like those keep them quite busy if they want to be busy. They played badminton, they did a lot of crafts and painting, and exercise classes too."

"I toured PA Peterson at the Citadel. I was surprised. I didn't even realize they had independent or assisted living. I mean, it's too small. I can't even get my bed into their bedroom. They needed to be redone because I did see an apartment, it wasn't for me, but the people were very nice, and the residents that I did see there seemed to be happy and content, which is always a good sign. They do have a different parking lot for independent living. It was hard to find a parking place. They had very few and they were kind of scattered. They did have a special parking lot, which I thought was nice because it's a lot easier to come and go, and a different entrance. The kitchen is a tiny little cubbyhole. The refrigerator and stove are there. The only thing you would have to supply is a microwave. There was very little counter space. So what little there was, the microwave would take up. It's one little tiny little corner because the main meal is provided. So, the only thing you would fix would be breakfast and supper. They have quite a menu. It's nice and it is a full meal. The staff was very courteous and she knew the residents. So I know she had a good rapport with them. The cleanliness, that's hard to judge because everywhere, they've been remodeling and redoing everything. It was kind of dirty on that but it was a construction site thing."

"Grand Regency of Rockford is within our price range. It is clean and my aunt seems to love the place. Any needs that I brought to them were addressed as soon as possible. She seems to like the food, too. It is a good place and they take care of everything."

"Luther Center is just like an apartment complex. I chose this facility because it was cheaper than the others. Everything is good. It has access to downtown and everything, the stop is right out front. It's not far to places you need to go to especially if you don't have a car. The rooms are really big and quiet. There are no problems and I give them a rating of five stars. "

"We toured Heritage Woods of Belvidere. It was an extremely nice place. I would recommend it. It's just a lovely place. I only met one staff member and she was the marketing director. She took us to one apartment only because they were filled up, so that tells you a lot. My husband and I were interested in it because it was big enough for two, and it was lovely. It was on the top floor of the building, a corner unit. It had windows on two sides. There was a bedroom, a bath, a diner, a little kitchen, and a big living area. It was all nicely furnished. The hallways were very wide. The decorations were tasteful, very subdued, but very nice. They had elevators to go down to the dining area. We saw the dining area. We also saw a private dining area. In fact, we had a conference there. It was all very nice, as I expected, because I heard very good things about it. It's a state-funded building, so they take in anybody and everybody regardless of your income. It's a Medicaid building, but what they do is they take all of your assets - your home, your cars, your bank account, everything, and then they promise you a place to stay for the rest of your life. If you want to go in on a private pay basis, that's available too. The main floor was mainly dining. But off of the dining room, they had a small area with books. They had a beauty parlor, a physical therapy room, a small concession where you can buy shampoo and snacks, and they also had private mailboxes. They had a nice greeter at the front desk. It's built out in the countryside. I can't imagine anybody not wanting to stay there."

"Wesley Willows Assisted Living was a very large place. The rooms were very well taken care of, very clean, and very nice. "

"TLC Living Community was like coming off of a fancy magazine. There wasn't a speck of dirt or dust. It was well maintained. I was very impressed with how modern it is. It was just immaculate as far as cleanliness and that type of stuff. They lack a few things that some of the other ones offer, but it was the most modern and immaculate place I've ever been in."

"Two of my grandparents have been at Highview in the Woodlands. One for respite care and one for assisted living with an Alzheimer's diagnosis. Both grandparents received care we were all pleased with. It's a small community which makes it very intimate and in return the nurses aren't being tied down and they have time to get to know the residents. I really liked their approach for the Alzheimer Care and the activities they provided."
