I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

We loved Mary and Pete’s. My father was there for the last 2 months of his life. It had been a little trying at times coordinating his care since I live out of state and he declined pretty quickly from living independently most of his life. Pat at Mary and Pete’s met me for a FaceTime interview and tour. I was impressed with her heart for caring for people. The rooms were spacious, both the community areas and the bedrooms. There is a variety of rooms - single, double, private bath. The backyard is also set up for community and has the loveliest Mountain View. The house is clean and smells nice. The staff are among the most caring people I have met in my life. I was so pleased to have my dad spend this time of his life in such a supportive place.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Mary & Pete's Assisted Living was the worst place in the world. My mother was there. It's a nightmare. I had to have an ombudsman to get her out of there. We were applying for ALTECS, and she got refused, so they made us pay $800 for the past month that she was there. Their hours were 9:00 to noon and then 1:00 to 4:00, and then they were shut. Their hours were closed afternoon on Friday, so you could not visit, and then Saturday it's completely closed, and then back to 9:00 to noon and 1:00 to 4:00, so my dad would never be able to have dinner or lunch with Mom again. I complained about the hours, because if you work, you never get to visit your loved one. Never, never, never. They are $3,800 a month and you never even get to visit your loved one. Because I complained about the hours, the staff took me aside and said that I was on probation, and I had a month to decide whether I liked the place or not. My dad, who has moderate dementia, the staff took him to a private room and made him sign papers and he didn't know what he was signing. The staff knew his condition and even recommended that I sell my home, my cars, everything to put my dad in there, too. My dad signed the paper that said he had until the 12th to get out, that they would no longer care for my mother. I knew there'd be a problem there, so I had an ombudsman there to help me get out. Mary & Pete's Assisted Living refused to give my mother's medicine. They refused to release my mother unless I gave them more money. They refused because they said you have to pay to the 12th, and I go, "No, you said I have until the 12th to get out. Why do I have to pay to the 12th?" When my mom broke a vase I said, "Don't you have insurance?" "No, I'm not going to put it on my insurance claim, not for a vase. You give me 80 bucks." They didn't care about their people. While I was there trying to get my mom out, the other residents were begging me to get them out of there, too. And one was following my mother around, begging her to help him get out of there. The ombudsman said she was going to call the police because they wouldn't release my mother, so they hurried up and called the police to cover their tracks, which was OK because I was glad a policeman was there. And then they took my mother to a private room to search her to make sure that they had documentation and that there were no bruises or anything, which was OK. But they told my mother, "You walk out that door, don't you ever come back here." And my mother was scared and in tears. They refused to give my mother her teeth and her dentures and all her personal items. My dad is 89 and it was lunchtime. The owner was holding the door open, "You have to go. It's lunchtime." So I'm like, "Dad, we have to go." Dad stood up, had a blood pressure drop, and hit the floor. He was unconscious on the floor. I thought he died right in front of my mom. My mom was panicking. They wheeled her to her room. Someone called 911. My dad finally came to. I said, "Dad, don't move. You took a bad fall. You're bleeding." And my dad slowly got up because the owner was like, "You have to leave." And she said, "911 is on the way. You have to go outside and wait for the ambulance." They're all certified to give respiratory and cardiac CPR and all that, but not one of the staff or the owner came to my dad's aid. Not only that, when we were out there with the ambulance, my mom's roommate was there, and she had taken a fall also. And so here comes the owner, "This is a bad day for falls, I guess. I need you guys to come in." She was trying to take my 911 call to come in and help her and leave my dad. It was horrible. They need to be reported.
