Tucson, Arizona, is a charming city with a population of 548,073, and about 14.3% of residents are over the age of 65. The city has no tax on Social Security benefits, and it’s home to a number of medical facilities and drug stores, making this an attractive place for seniors to retire. Seniors in Tucson have access to Northwest Medical Center-Tucson, which is ranked as high-performing in five procedures by US News. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020, the cost of nursing home care is less in Tucson than the average American city, at a median cost of $6,565 for a semiprivate room.
Nursing home care is best-suited to seniors who require constant medical supervision and a high level of care. This type of care is often more expensive than other senior care options due to the large number of staff required to provide this level of care. Family members may want to look at other care options, such as assisted living or home health care if around-the-clock medical care isn’t required.
This guide covers the costs of different care levels in Tucson and some of the senior resources available.

This review is for both Skilled Nursing and Independent Living… first… when I moved my parents in (Independent Living), the manager and her first replacement were fine people… the food at the start was excellent… friendly staff… but WAY too expensive… then an unqualified loudmouth named Fred took over as Manager and things went downhill fast… ZERO help if you need it (dad fell down gently a few times, just needed help to get on his feet…) Fred refused to allow staff to come up and assist, he said call 911!! Food quality sank badly. Rooms are old and needed maintenance/repair often.
Mom got sick and spent time in Skilled nursing… care was adequate, no more… disappointed… I hope Fred is gone… the facility might be better now. Still WAY too expensive for Independent living!

Administration went beyond in assisting the family with the dynamics of a family member and assured us the safety of our mother, the nurses went beyond there job description to make it all happen. Thank you to Ms. Heather (Administrator), Rhiannon (Nurse Manager), Melissa, Abid (Charge Nurses). We know we will leave out many names who cared for our mother but want you to know you were awesome. The food was delicious and very presentable. It takes a team to be the best and that is what Devon Gables is.

If I could rate this rehab facility a zero, I would. My father came home with Covid after they refused to test him. He ended up right back in the hospital where he spent the next 3 months! He could not perform any of the functions on his P/T report. His home nurse said he should have been sent to the hospital. My phone calls were not returned. Visitors were not allowed and it seemed like they took advantage of that to neglect the patients. After they called to report Covid was present in the facility, no one called back with answers to my questions. We received a $2000 bill from a doctor that we never heard of. T.E.R.R.I.B.L.E.

When my Dad first was placed in Villa Maria, they called me when there was any incident..
and the care seemed to be good. a smaller nursing home.. so i figured his care would be good..
It really depends on the caregiver…as it would anywhere..
both my Dad and his roommate do not have their call buttons a good half of the time.. they are usually on the floor or clipped to a curtain or someplace out of reach.. I have mentioned this many times to them.. without remedy often.
They allowed my Dads catheter line to drag on the ground to where he was stepping on it and rolling his wheel chari on it.. which could cause him severe injury and hospitalization..
I was extremely upset bout this issue cuz I have mentioned it many many times to them.they seem impermeable. and they cant hear me.. no matter how many times i have said it..
This is not the most favorable facility.. The food is horrible a good deal of the time..
I asked them to get my Dad a hair cut.. it took two weeks for this to happen and wasnt easy..

I would have given this facility no stars if I had the opportunity. Staff did not communicate. My father was in to have a wound treated and the wound only got worse and the staff was horrible. My father was neglected, starved and not provided proper rehab. There was no communication from the staff unless I called and demanded it. My father’s pain was not managed and his wounds worsened under their care. However, the worst to me is that when I finally gathered my fathers belongings, every note and letter that was written to him by friends and family was unopened and unread. This shows the lack of compassion of this staff and facility as patients are alone and in need of some comfort. DO NOT place your loved ones in this facility. Covid has given this place excuses to neglect patients and as a result my father ended up in hospice and passing away.

Most of the patients who get admitted to our hospital from Avalon (which is quite a few) are in very bad health condition. Many of them seem to have been ignored by the facility. Have seen patients who have had sepsis, bacterial infections, pressure ulcers, dehydration etc. Its truly sad to see something like this as it feels inhumane.
I am not sure how this facility escapes any kind of inspection and passes the basic regulations.

My elderly loved one was admitted to Pueblo Springs for rehab to strengthen his legs after an illness kept him in bed for nearly a month. Prior to the illness he could walk using his walker.
This place neglected him so badly and we didn’t even realize it. Due to covid we were only able to visit for an hour at a time in the lobby. But when we got him home, he was completely bed ridden, had impacted bowels which were causing him much pain and discomfort, dehydration and severe "diaper rash" on his groin and private area. It was very painful and distressing to him and all of us. Plus, no one ever returns phone calls.
He is now in hospice.
Pueble Springs is an awful place. Don’t send your loved one there.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Tucson, AZ
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
