"We are using Lares Home Care for my mother. They help my mother with cooking, dressing, and showering. We have been using them for two months now. We chose them because they were very helpful. They immediately responded. They placed someone very, very quickly, and we were very happy with the people that they placed with us. The caregivers are excellent. They're very caring and very on top of things. Communication is excellent. Follow-up is excellent. I have nothing bad to say. Scheduling is fine as well. We have never had a problem when someone had to leave temporarily for a day off or something to get someone else to come out, they take care of everything. It is flawless. I would recommend them. Their caregivers are very nice, very pleasant to work with, very professional, dressed very nicely as well, and very clean and neat."

"Starburst is currently taking care of my grandmother. We are currently very pleased with the aide and office support. We have had live in care now for 6 months and 2 different girls have been assigned to her. Both have been really great. We were worried about losing our first aide, however the fill in aide was just as good. We are fortunate for this. I would recommend this agency. They are good."

"We signed my father up for care about a year ago, as his mobility is limited and he really requires help with cooking, shopping, doctors visits, etc. Although he was reluctant at first to have someone come to his home, he is extremely happy with the help he gets from Theresa several days a week. He has nothing but positive things to say about her and our family is very relieved we have someone as caring as she is with him. In addition to Theresa, I feel that the rest of the team at Right-at-home do a great job communicating with me, as their central point of contact."

"We have SYNERGY HomeCare of Toms River for my dad. They're giving a hands-on physical wash-up. They help with getting him dressed, moving him around the house, and getting him into bed at night. They help with food prep and cleaning the bathroom. Just whatever needs doing, they are doing, and it is wonderful. They accompany us to appointments and to church. We have three different caregivers, and they're all wonderful. They're very attentive and caring. I can't rave enough about them. I get Monday through Friday, 9 to 5. I have Saturday and Sunday, 9 to 5. I also have a 7-day 6 to 10 at night. The staffing is wonderful. You just call up, and you can always reach the one in charge. It is definitely worth the money. I can't recommend them highly enough. We wanted male caregivers, and a lot of places have females. However, my dad is 98 and a half, and he is old school. He wanted guys to take care of him, so they just provided me with three different guys, and they are wonderful."

"I feel like I've known Lydia a long time...did from day one. She is currently spending six hours a day/five days a week with my aunt who suffers with dementia. She is always attending to my aunt's needs...encourages her to drink her nutritional drink and water, wipes her face, massages her and takes her outside for fresh air. She also assists the gals in the home when changing or bathing my aunt. She also makes sure we know when things need to be purchased. We feel very lucky to have her"

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Monmouth County:
| Resource | Contact | Address | Service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meals on Wheels of Monmouth County | (732) 807-2708 | 1201 Springwood Ave, Asbury Park, NJ 07712 | The Monmouth County Meals on Wheels program offers noon meal service to homebound seniors throughout Monmouth County and is available to elders over age 60. The program also offers group lunches across several senior centers throughout the principal towns and cities inside Monmouth County. |
| Project Lifesaver | (732) 431-7450 | 3000 Kozloski Road, Freehold, NJ, 07728 | This initiative from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department and the Monmouth County Office on Aging offers seniors residing in the county a bracelet that comes with a small radio frequency device. County Sheriff’s officers can then use this to locate elderly individuals who become lost or disoriented. The device is available free of charge to senior residents and is especially recommended for those undergoing the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Sheriff’s deputies visit each participant’s home once every 60 days to recharge these devices and make sure they’re working properly. |
| Monmouth County Office on Aging | (732) 431-7450 | 3000 Kozloski Road, Freehold, NJ, 07728 | The Office on Aging of New Jersey offers a range of support services and programs for elderly residents of the state who are aged 60 or older. The program is open year-round and applies for water, gas, electricity and telecommunications bill payments. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
