"The agency provides home health aides twice per week. They provide additional aide coverage if the primary caregiver is called aeay overnight. This happens a few times per year and the agency has always responded adequately. The aides have been very punctual. The agency always telephones if the aide is running late. This is rare, and the lateness is generally less than 15 minutes."

"I have to say Doris and James are very nice people and they understand what you are looking for. It sometimes takes a few aides but they get the right fit. Doris calls me whenever someone else might have to go to house or they might be running a little late because something might have happened in the aides family. They stay on top of things and I appreciate that. I feel mom is in good hands."

"I have an aide coming in through Lares Home Care for mom. I've only been using them for about two weeks now. The staff members are very helpful and patient during the intake process and getting it all set up with my mother. Everything seems so good so far. I don't have any complaints or anything. The caregiver is excellent. They help her with her activities of daily living and keeping her company and offered to help do little chores around the house. She's very patient, kind, and very supportive of me and my husband."

"My mom is using Qualicare Home Care Princeton 24/7. They help her with her bathing and getting up in the morning. They do some cooking, some light cleaning, and her laundry as well. We have two aides, and they try to send the same ones because my mom doesn't accept change well. There was one brand new girl who was just temporary. When I call to say that we need changes or something like that, they're very receptive and they try to do it as soon as possible. I set up her medications. They just remind her to take it. I set up the pills, and then they can pour them into a little dish so that she can take them."

"We hired Always Best Care two weeks ago for my mom. The woman comes in three days a week to assist my mother with doing the wash, keeping the house picked up, and just talking to her. She’s wonderful. We interviewed several people, and there was just something about the way they were organized in their presentation and their follow up. that impressed us. They were a level above the other ones that we spoke to. They really listen to you about your needs and work very hard to match the caregiver up with what you’re looking for. We were very impressed with them. "

"I hired Always Best Care for Mom Monday through Friday. They are expensive, but that's the going rate, unfortunately. They were very reactive; I called them, and the next day, they were at the house doing the assessment to see what was exactly needed. However, there were two occasions where I called them and did not get a response back within 12 hours. On one occasion, I called them on a Friday afternoon, and they called me back on Saturday at 10:00. But, they're not bad. The person they recommended was wonderful. I don't have complaints about that. "

In-Home Care Overview: Seniors Helping Seniors Eastern Union and Essex Counties of New Jersey At Seniors Helping Seniors®, we believe care is most meaningful when it’s built on connection. As a husband-and-wife team, we launched our agency to bring compassionate, in-home support to older adults in Union and Essex Counties—delivered by mature adults who truly understand the journey. Our story begins with our parents. For years, they’ve quietly served others—driving neighbors to appointments, preparing meals, offering companionship. Watching them, we saw the power of kindness in action. That’s what inspired us to turn our personal values into professional purpose. After decades in corporate leadership and caregiving roles, we (Matt and Erin Eckard) felt called to build something lasting in the community we now call home. Seniors Helping Seniors® stood out to us for its heart-centered approach: matching active senior caregivers with those who could use a helping hand and a friendly face. We know that choosing care for a loved one can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’re here—to offer not just services, but genuine support. Our caregivers are carefully matched for personality, interests, and experience, creating relationships that go far beyond a checklist. Whether it’s help with daily tasks, companionship, or specialized support, our team is committed to helping seniors live with dignity, independence, and joy—from the comfort of home. We’re proud to serve families across Eastern Union and Essex Counties, and we’d be honored to support yours.

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Middlesex County:
| Resource | Contact | Service |
|---|---|---|
| Middlesex County Senior Meal Program | (732) 745-3295 | The Middlesex County Meals Program serves as the regional Meals on Wheels service of the County Office of Aging and Disabled Services. This nutrition initiative, which is available to seniors aged 60 or older throughout the county, is funded by federal grant money and client donations. Meals aren’t denied to clients who can’t pay, but a recommended donation of $2.75 is requested. Assorted menu options that cater to different dietary needs are delivered to the doors of homebound members of the program. |
| New Jersey Shares | (866) 657-4273 | For New Jersey Seniors who don’t qualify for other utility assistance programs such as LIHEAP or USF, and who have an income lower than 400% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, NJ Shares offers temporary utility payment assistance for those who’ve fallen behind on paying their bills due to a financial crisis. The program is available all year and can be used to pay water, gas, telecommunications and electrical bills. |
| New Jersey Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) | (732) 828-4672 | New Jersey’s Weatherization Assistance Program offers weatherization and repair services to income-eligible residents of the state. The program is funded by state and federal money. Low-income seniors and households with low-income families or disabled members are given preference. The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs manages this program, but applicants enroll through local weatherization partners in their county. In Middlesex, this is through the PRAB community action agency. Seniors receiving Supplemental Security Income are automatically eligible, and the weatherization program works on owned or rented homes for weather extremes at no cost. |
| State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) | (732) 745-3295 | The State Health Insurance Program of New Jersey offers senior residents of the state free counseling on obtaining and managing their New Jersey Medicare and other health insurance benefits. The New Jersey Department of Human Services and the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services fund this initiative. The counselors of SHIP offer unbiased advice about government health insurance claims, long-term care insurance and Medicare or Medicaid coverage benefits. Seniors can contact the County Office of Aging and Disabled Services for a SHIP counselor. |
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
