Cape May County features the Atlantic Ocean to its south and east and Delaware Bay to its west, offering beautiful sights and a temperate climate. The county is home to 95,000 people, and well over a quarter of the population is aged 65 or over — substantially more than the state and national average of around 17%. Crime is relatively uncommon here, and there are several high-performing hospitals, including Cape Regional Medical Center in the city of Cape May.
On average, Cape May County seniors pay $5,529 per month for nonmedical in-home care, which includes services such as help with personal grooming, medication reminders and light housekeeping. It doesn’t include skilled nursing services, but seniors can get this higher level of care by obtaining home health care services.
Below we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in Cape May County– complete with services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled resources to help seniors and their families to access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

The in-house Aides for my 95 year old mother with moderate dementia have been a big help over the last 3 years mostly from 11am to 7pm. However, in the last 3 months it was necessary to start 24hr in-house care due to her increased dementia and for safety, since she could not be left alone anymore.
They perform limited house chores keeping the bathrooms, kitchen, bedroom and rugs clean and safe. They insure my mother gets all her medications, helps her with dressing, showering, and keeping her clothes and bed clean. The Aides also cook for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

My mother availed the services of Griswold Home Care. The agency has worked with me very well. The caretaker that I have now is wonderful. I’ve gone through two that have lived in, and then others that have substituted only. I was away in Florida this past winter, and my regular caretaker had to go home in an emergency. When I called my mother-in-law and asked, "What did you eat for lunch?" She’d say, "I didn’t have lunch, but I just ate my breakfast" I’m looking at the clock; it’s 10 to one. I doubt that she had a shower. All those little things add up. I called Griswold, and told them, "Listen, I know you can’t do anything about this right now. I know we only have two more days till the regular girl comes back." I said, "but the girl that is there right now is a problem. I said, she’s sleeping. She’s in pajamas at twelve o’clock when my neighbor came."
The one we have now, we’ve had her for 18 months. She’s up at 5:30, and I can hear her if I wake up and am there; I can hear her putzing around and running in the kitchen. Mildred is an angel, and she’s the same age (70 years old). It’s just the younger ones; they only do what they have to do. It’s sad because these people depend on them. You’ve got to get her up before one o’clock in the afternoon, come on. Common sense says don’t let an older person lay like that.
I give my current caretaker a nice review, but I don’t want to give my review on other people that haven’t been in either. The one that I have now, she helps my mother-in-law because she is incontinent. She helps her onto the commode and off it, probably two and three times through the night if my mother-in-law calls her. We’ll hear her. We have bells on her walker. In the morning she comes in, and she takes the commode out of her room. She showers her always, at least twice a week. She fixes treats for her and always has a nice breakfast with fruit and cereal. Different things on different days. She’s good that way. She cooks a full meal for dinner every day. There’s not a lot of people around like this anymore, and she lives there 24/7.
Mildred only takes a break or goes somewhere when my husband and I are there. She’ll take like an hour or two for her personal needs to go get something at the store. We work with her, and she’s been wonderful to us. I have nothing but good things to say about that. Unfortunately, that is one out of five people that I’ve had. I feel terrible; I just hope that this works out as well.
Griswold had always been very helpful. I hate giving it as the overall for caretakers because it’s not true, but I have to say the current one that I have is wonderful. I would definitely recommend Griswold. They’re very accommodating, and they get back to you. They bring the caretaker to you. If they have to leave, they can take them to the bus station or wherever they have to go.

Medicaid referred me to Always Home Care for my dad, who is a stroke survivor in need of a home health aide. These people put me through a series of questions and had me go through the work of getting a doctor’s referral for the services and then the agency (Deborah is the contact) told me (after I made several follow-up calls a week later:: "The owner has to sign the paperwork for the aide to lift your father. And then we have to find an aide who’s willing to do that kind of work." Mind you, I had already told this woman that my father can assist and doesn’t need to be picked up, only guided. After several more phone calls to them I was assured that Deborah would call me back with an answer. She never did. But God is good because if this is any indication of the reliability of any aides hired, my dad was spared and I was saved. Thank you, Jesus.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in Cape May County, NJ
Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
- Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
- Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
- Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
- Reverse Mortgages: Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.
