Carver is the site of King Richard’s Faire, the largest and longest-running Renaissance fair in New England. Seniors, who make up nearly 20% of Carver’s 12,000 residents, are welcome at the event, along with a host of other outdoor activities in this city in the southern suburbs of Boston. Like much of the rest of the area, Carver enjoys generally mild summers with average highs in the low 80s, as well as a very low crime rate that makes the town exceptionally safe for independent seniors who like to spend time out in the community. Seniors in Carver pay up to 16% less for healthcare expenses than the national average, and some of the world’s most advanced senior medicine is available at the nearby Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.

Homemaker services in Carver cost seniors an average of $5,434 a month, according to the 2019 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. The same survey found seniors pay $5,482 a month for home health aide services. Nationally, seniors pay significantly less. Homemaker services across the nation average $4,290 a month, while seniors generally pay $4,385 for a home health aide.

Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Carver, so data for the closest city, Boston, was used.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Carver area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. It provides companionship for my mother. We only used Right at Home for one hour and 15 minutes a week so we don’t use them very much. They are very consistent which is good.

Carver Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Carver:

Low Income Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)

Address: 100 Cambridge St., Suite 300, Boston, MA 02114
Phone: (617) 573-1100

Seniors in Carver can get their homes ready for the winter at no cost with help from the Low Income Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP). WAP provides free home inspections for seniors in Carver, as well as help paying for the installation of new or upgraded insulation, windows and doors. The program also gives senior homeowners in Carver helpful tips for improving their homes’ current energy efficiency with new appliances and strategic shade trees on the property. This program has income and asset limitations for seniors who apply.

Home Modification Loan Program (HMLP)

Address: 600 Washington St., Boston, MA 02111
Phone: (617) 204-3600

Homeowners in Carver who are seniors aged 60 and over may be eligible for a no-interest home improvement loan through the Home Modification Loan Program (HMLP). Seniors who own a home, but who earn less than the program’s income threshold, may be able to borrow the funds they need to bring a house up to code, or to improve safety and accessibility, with a 0% interest loan from one of the HMLP’s approved lenders. Income and asset limits apply.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Address: 100 Cambridge St., Suite 300, Boston, MA 02114
Phone: (617) 573-1100

Carver seniors may be able to reduce the monthly cost of heating and cooling their homes by up to 30% through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), sometimes called the Fuel Assistance Program in Massachusetts. Seniors in Carver who meet the program’s income maximums can sign up for LIHEAP online or by mail. In addition to the monthly discount, many LIHEAP recipients also get assistance upgrading their energy-inefficient old appliances, weatherizing their homes or preventing disconnected utility service with one-time emergency bill payments that may be requested on short notice with a letter of disconnect and proof of residency in Plymouth County.

Family Caregiver Support Program

Address: One Ashburton Place, Floor 5, Boston, MA 02108
Phone: (617) 727-7750

The Family Caregiver Support Program helps seniors in Carver live independently by paying the cost of an in-home caregiver. The program also supports caregivers with education resources, support groups and respite care. Seniors aged 55 and over who are raising an underage family member can also apply to the program for help finding education resources, signing up for benefits the family may be eligible for and meeting personal care needs for the children.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
