"My aunt is using Right at Home, Burbank California right now. I'm very happy with it. We called them, told them how many hours a day and when, and they sent somebody else that could fit in that circumstance. So I think it's been great. Then you can either pay the agency directly or if you have insurance, they can bill the insurance. So the families can choose what to do with that. I'm very happy with it all the way around, and now we have two nice ladies. They help her with personal services, like getting her ready, taking a shower, taking her for a walk, and light housekeeping. They'll do whatever we ask them to, just light stuff, and not anything heavy. I think they do a really good job and I would use them again."

"I've been using Home Instead - Pasadena, CA for over two years now. I was very fortunate that I got their best caregiver in their office because he has been really helpful with my husband. I am the full-time caregiver, but I have a Home Instead caregiver, three times a week, six hours each day, so that's 18 hours a week. He helps me because I am only 4 feet 8 inches and my husband is 6 feet tall. It is very difficult for me to handle him. At the same time, he's still cognizant enough to follow directions, but we need to tell him what to do, like in bathing and dressing. It helps me to have the caregiver when I have to go out for instance because my husband also is a fall risk and he has fallen many times and so it's better to have a bigger person and this person is large and is very gentle. My husband calls him the jolly gentle giant and he's been very helpful. He comes from a caregiving family and so maybe that helps but he kind of knows how things are going. A lot of times if I don't think about doing something, he does, and he really helps me keep my husband safe because of his ways and manners. He's very, very helpful. Someone that I know at my church had used my caregiver for a shorter period of time. He's in high demand. I would like to use him a couple more days if I could, but he is taken up on the other days. People that use him really like him because he knows what he's doing and he's very pleasant. He knows how to talk to people and how to be a good caregiver. It's a real skill and he says he does really enjoy doing his job and it shows in how he treats his clients. Some people have criticized the office the way they do things, but you have to learn the system and it didn't take me long. In the beginning, I didn't know who to contact if I had to change an appointment or something like that, but you learn who to talk to and everyone has been very helpful and always very pleasant. I've been with them two years and I really don't have difficulty because I've learned who to contact and they've helped me with some paperwork. There is a person that's above my caregiver who's in charge of him. There's always somebody that I'm in contact with. If we're going to do something else on a certain day, I know to call ahead of time. I haven't had any problem, so I can't complain. If you're having trouble, you need to tell them."

"We are using TheKey - Central LA for my grandmother. It's just once a week that they come for about 5 hours. So far, they have helped my grandmother wash her clothes, give her company, and tidy around the house for her. The only issue I'm having is that I haven't received the bill, and it's already the fourth week. I spoke with a gentleman who was the one who did the interview with us, and they're working on it. He's really quick, very straightforward, and keeps me in the loop of what's happening. They are very friendly people. It felt very legit."

"Our regular independent caregiver went on a 3 week holiday. Deservedly so , but then we were without help. Our 93 year Mom with Alzheimer’s had just suffered a stroke then bronchitis and just started to scissor her legs not helping us with walking. Caring for her had become a 2 person job. So we are so grateful that we interviewed John. He came with his caregivers to bond with us and he rescued us. Every caregiver he sent during these trying holidays were super sweet and on time. We loved working with them all. John, continue your conscience service. You were the right choice for our caregiving needs. Much success to you and we will continue to work with you on weekends."

"My parents are using Right at Home. We have placement of caregivers in their house every day. They were very quick to respond when I reached out to inquire about their services. They called me back within 15 minutes. They had somebody meeting with my family the next day. They worked with my family to coordinate the appropriate care that was going to be satisfactory to all parties, including my parents and my sister and myself, so that everyone is satisfied and no one is feeling over pressured or burdened. They went above and beyond in helping my parents secure the care and the individuals in their house that they wanted. I'm just highly impressed with them. Whenever there's an issue, they're very quick to respond to all the family members, and make sure everybody knows what's going on. There weren't a whole lot of in-home care agencies, and most of the in-home care agencies require a minimum amount of hours, and it's usually six to eight, and my parents did not want that amount of time. Right at Home was able to find workers that were willing to work for four hours instead of the six or eight, and so it fit better into my parents' schedule and their schedule, and that's why we went with them. I haven't met the caregiver, but my sister said that she is exemplary and is an angel with skin."

Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
Glendale has several agencies and programs that support seniors’ independence and privacy at home. Through the following resources, older adults can access home-delivered meals, affordable personal care services and money-saving programs.

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
