"My father will be going into The Villas by Astoria Park. I didn't try their food, but one of the reasons why I didn't think it was necessary is because my father got the deluxe studio, which has a kitchenette, and he pretty much insists on making his own food. It was bright, airy, cheery, clean, and up-to-date. It was a nice feeling walking in. I met Tricia, who is the program director. I thought she was well-informed about senior needs. She spoke about all that she has studied in terms of longevity and what's good for a healthy, active senior life, which is something that I appreciated given my father, even at 101, is quite active."

"Sakura Gardens of Los Angeles was very clean and the staff was very helpful. It's gated so it's very safe. I saw the dining hall and then a one-bedroom. It was nice. We are looking for a bilingual or more of a Japanese-speaking facility, and this person helped me and showed me around. She was fully bilingual. So, that would have been good for my friend. It was a good experience."

"A couple of weeks ago, I visited Hollenbeck Palms in Los Angeles and I like that very much. They have a chapel which is unique. The location is not ideal as the surrounding area is not exactly high class but I still really like it. It's the best out of every place that I have visited so far. The people were very friendly. I was able to meet a number of residents and I was impressed by how friendly they were. I only met one staff member and she was very helpful. I would rate her very highly. I probably need to say though that all I can afford at Hollenback is a studio apartment because if you're going to get a 1-bedroom, there's a substantial buy-in of over $200,000. That is a bit of a difficulty for me. I was also impressed by the food. I had lunch there with some nice people. The food was the best of all that I have had and I had lunch at several places I visited. They had the one thing the others did not have and that's the chapel. That appeals very much to me."

"I toured Pasadena Highlands. Janine, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and informative. She gave us a complete tour. She was open to all our questions. She was new, so there were a few questions that we had that she wasn't sure of. However, she got the information back to us within a day or two. The property is a high rise. The outdoor space was incredible. The garden and the walking path were very peaceful and welcoming. That was nice, even though it was on a major street. Unfortunately, the time that we went there, it was right after the fires and the high winds that we had. Even though a lot of the shrubberies and the trees were thinned out a bit because of the wind, they still helped block the noise from the major street, so that was nice. As for cleanliness, I didn't see anything that stood out. It didn't smell like they were trying to cover up bad smells or anything like that. However, the building was not conducive to my parents being so large. It is also old. I don't know how long it's been there, but I think it's been there a while. There was another assisted living community that burned down, and so they accepted a lot of the residents from that community. We didn't get to see an apartment because they were all booked. The office where we met Janine was a converted apartment that they use now for an office, and I think the size of it was adequate for one person, but not two."

"It is a wonderful facility. It seems very nice and clean. The staff was very informative on the tour. It seems like a good place for senior living if that's what's needed for someone. It was great. I don't have anything negative to say about it. I was just touring looking for the best place for my aunt, but it was a contender. The rooms were nice and spacious. You would have to bring your own furniture, but that wasn't a problem. I thought the rooms were a good space, and they had the option of sharing a room with someone or having your own room, which was nice. And the fact that you could bring your pets was also a plus."

"The Piedmont is a reasonably sized community of about 190 apartments and there are about 250 to 280 people. It's a mixed group with diverse demographics here, which is nice. The people are friendly. We mostly get along pretty well together. They have lots of activities for seniors to do. A few I get engaged with and a few that I don't, but they have a fair amount of activity going on. It's a pretty reasonably happy place. The staff is pretty darn good. The manager and the assistant in the office are friendly and easy to talk to and get along with. They have a maintenance staff and cleaning staff that do a pretty decent job. They have an art class, physical fitness training twice a week, and several yoga classes. They have people coming in to present programs such as programs on diabetes or mental health care and stuff like that, or safety in the older age like trips, slips, and falls. They also have groups come in to do small concerts from time to time. We have one scheduled at the end of this month. We had one last month. The last month was a high school group, and they did a wonderful job. This month, there's going to be a guy coming in with a guitar and he's a professional guitarist. We have members here who put on their own little groups. They have card games, bingo, Mahjong, and Scrabble games going on. They're looking into possibly doing some other educational-type activities. So, there is a fairly diverse amount of things that go on. Participation rates are a little smaller than I had hoped, but there's a decent amount of people who participate in them. The facilities are a little more than 20 years old and they have some signs of wear, but every time a resident leaves, they paint the empty apartment and get it ready for the next resident. They come in and they change all the carpets in here. They make it nice for somebody moving in. I love my apartment. It's great. I go to some of the meetings and classes and stuff that they have and I participate in the exercise almost daily, and the art class for two hours once every two weeks. Sometimes I wish that was a little bit more frequently, but then again, I've got other activities that I do. I'm quite happy to be here and the more I find out about some of the others that I have on my list, this one seems to be creeping up. It's a good value for the money."

"Beverly Hills Carmel Retirement Hotel is a five star facility. Staying in this facility is like staying in a hotel. The staff members are cheerful, welcoming and full of energy. The facility is well decorated and clean. Loved ones are well taken care off. This facility is five out of five and I would hifgly recommend. "

"Everything about Belmont Village Senior Living Westwood was excellent. It was a bit on the expensive side. The building and grounds were fine. The people we saw seemed to be active, well, and alert. Somebody who's in charge of prospective customers took us around, and introduced us to people, and showed off several accommodations. We looked at several, and what we were interested in was very expensive. The person who took us around was very good, very pleasant, very informative."

"The Gardens at Park Balboa is very nice, I liked it. The problem is my husband requires insulin shots in the morning and afternoon and they don't have a nurse. I like the fact that it's close to my mother's place, so it's easy for me to go to visit my husband if I decide to take him there. It looks like a very friendly environment, and I like the fact that they have activities for their people. I only interact with the host, his name is Jonathan, and a couple of people there. He was friendly and gave us all the information we needed, and I like the fact that they have a bilingual staff, my husband is speaking Spanish, so is very confused with the languages. But good to know they have a Spanish-speaking staff too. I saw a garden that was nice to have for walking. They have a lunchroom, and they have a small living room as well. And they had music and there was dancing. That was nice."

"I had a great tour of Palm Court. The person who showed us the facilities was super empathetic and kind. She did a great job establishing rapport, getting to know us, learning a little bit more about what my grandma was looking for, and then positioning the best options for her. She was generally knowledgeable about that phase of life and what would be important and what to look for as far as touring properties. She was thorough and super helpful. The place was pretty clean. Parking was challenging. However, the staff explained that they were doing some renovation projects, and additional construction workers and things on site were taking up all of their spaces. It wasn't a typical thing, and it was just a circumstance at that time because of the project. As for appliances, they would allow you to bring in a microwave, but that's it. You can't have any open burners. However, they provide three meals a day, and the kitchen is open from 6 in the morning until 10 at night."

"We were really happy with Terraza Court. I went to this facility, and I highly recommend it. It's nice. Even I would want that for myself, that's how much we love that facility. And I love the attention that was provided to us. I forgot the lady's name, but she attended to us on that day. They allowed us an opportunity to check the entire memory care floor. We were able to tour the dining area and the outdoors where they would walk the patients. It was very clean. No smell that the other facility had, so I know how clean it was, and the care being provided to the patients is really up to par. Even the restrooms for the vacant rooms that they had available were very clean, well-updated, and maintained. Even my mom was happy with Terraza Court."

"Westmont Culver City is very nice and it's brand new. My mother has a one-bedroom, one-bath, and it's nice. I highly recommend it. The staff is great. They have a gym, chair aerobics for everybody, a movie theater, a restaurant, a courtyard, front and back entrances, private elevators, you have to use the key to get in, and front desk staff. She doesn't like the food that much."
