I toured Marian Manor. The staff member we met was very professional, very knowledgeable, and caring. The facility is so nice. It's a really beautiful place. It was competitive and comparable with the other places. The rooms are very spacious, very comfortable, very nice, and clean. They didn't smell like a nursing home or assisted living place. It smells like a hotel, like a nice, nice hotel. The lady who gave us the tour was very nice, gracious, and really knew her stuff. She was good.

My mother-in-law used to be a resident of Marian Manor. She had a one-bedroom there with a private bath. I liked that it is affiliated with the Catholic Church, and I liked the people that were there. I definitely liked the location and I liked that the staff there were very familiar with my mother-in-law. She had the same person who was always taking care of her, and she had a nighttime person who always took care of her. Practically, all the staff there knew her by sight, and if she was to go out of her room, they would greet her. I believe everybody knows all of their residents there. It is a very caring and loving kind of place. They definitely exude the love and compassion there. What she liked to do was to go the common television room and there were some other people that also went there that she felt comfortable with. They would just watch TV or they would sit in front of the TV and take a nap, but they were just with somebody that they were comfortable with. She used to enjoy going down for breakfast and dinner and sitting with some regulars there, and just being in the company of someone that she felt comfortable with. She is very shy and does not warm up to strangers very quickly. The food there was very good; I was surprised at how good the food was there. They had probably like three different entrées that you could get for dinner, and there were always snacks. You could always get a hamburger or grilled cheese or something. They had two different entrées that you could usually choose from. There was an assortment of breakfast that you could pick: cereals, oatmeal, eggs. There were many different ways you could cook eggs. Cleanliness was like next to godliness there; it was extremely clean, very well kept, neat as a pin. It did not look used or worn, it looked very comfortable and inviting, almost brand new. There were nice things to look at. They had fresh flowers, a player piano in the lobby that sometimes they would turn on at different times of the day. It just played very calming piano music. I have not seen anything better than Marian Manor. They had plenty of activities, she just did not like to do them. They always had something there. They had a minivan of some type where all you had to do was sign up and they had outings for you. You could sign up and go to either the concert at the Sandler Hall downtown Virginia Beach or they would take you over to the museum or any event that was going on. They always had something going on. I would get a newsletter from them that told me what they were doing. They invited us to come up and have dinner with them, and it was a very nice dinner environment. It was like being in a very large restaurant. It was comfortable. There were lots of wheelchairs around and stuff, but it was really very nice. For their holidays, they would always invite the family to come up and have meals with the residents. I was amazed by the price points, but when you call around and shop it is a fair value.

Marian Manor is the very best quality facility around. They are the only facility that offers so many diverse activities including a college level painting course. The staff at Marian Manor are always very helpful and contribute to a happy environment and their food is delicious!

My father is at Marian Manor. He's fine and enjoying himself. It's clean, and they're well taken care of. They do a wonderful job but maybe the food could be a little better. They have bingo and all kinds of activities. The dining area is clean.

Positive - office and nursing staff are caring and conscientious, plenty of various programs and activities to keep residents socially active, physically fit, and spiritually connected. The housekeeping and maintenance staff has also been conscientious, friendly and helpful, even beyond the call of duty at times. Negative - I have observed the downstairs rest room, off of the living room, to be dirty, even very dirty, on several occasions, sometimes on weekends when there may be less staff. Once there was feces on the floor and toilet, which had been there for a while because it was dried up. The biggest complaint right now, is the food. A new chef came on late in 2015, a huge change from the previous chef. The food had been delicious, healthy, and in a style that the residents enjoyed. The food now is not heart-healthy at all, much more starchy, very little meat or protein, overcooked vegetables, and in unusual or poorly executed styles. Maybe there has been a budget cut as well as the new chef. Some of the dining room staff are friendly and helpful, some are insensitive to the needs of elderly, even rude. Residents are assigned seats in the dining room, which may be more efficient for the staff, but it makes socialization more difficult. The grounds and gardens provide a pleasant, natural environment, and the students from the neighboring school sometimes come to share an activity with the residents. There is a daily exercise class, and daily evening prayer, both led by residents.

My dad was at Marian Manor for 14 months, so we know them very well. In my opinion, they need to start emptying the trash once and day and need to improve the quality and temperature of their food. We found out afterward that my father was being berated by the staff. I think they need people who are more experienced in elder care.

My mother is staying in Marian Manor. I came across it through various people. It is part of St. Gregory Catholic Church. My mother was very impressed. We had a meal, and she got to order a meal. She was impressed with the people because they were very nice. She has met some people, she's gotten involved, and she is very pleased. We have eaten there twice, and the meals were very good. The staff is very helpful to her. They talk to her all the time. They are very happy and very friendly. She is in a private room. She has a twin bed, an easy chair, TV, two dressers, a refrigerator, and plenty of closet space. She is very happy with it. She has been participating in bingo and cards. She also is getting some therapy, and she does a lot of walking.

Marian Manor was busy. I could tell the staff seemed happy to be there. The kitchen staff was friendly. When you walked in, it was like an expensive living room, and even though the rooms were small, it was still painted nicely. They had their own bathroom. The staff was friendly, and it was just warm. You go in, and then you had the rooms on the left, the office on the left. You come through, there was so much room, and it was nice like a restaurant. You could go outside if you wanted. They had gazebos set up and tables if you want to go outside. It was nice.

Marian Manor would have cost me over $5,000 a month and of that $5,000, I would have had to take $2,000 out of my assets every month to have enough money to pay for my rent. There was no room to show -- however I was in there several times to see patients who were in hospice, so I was able to see that they have a dining room. It looks probably about 15 years old. It was gorgeous when it was first opened, now it looks OK. I just felt like they were the most expensive. They do offer money once you run out of money if you’ve been there for four years, as it is run by the Catholic Church, and they provide you with enough money to live there. That was a plus, but then I felt as though I was trapped, that I had to go there, and that made me anxious and annoyed. I continued to figure out and talk to people, and that’s how I came to believe that I could live in independent living with very limited assistance. It’s assisted living and I think they have different steps or levels of care, so it depends on what you need. As your care needs go up, so does your rent, like anywhere. In assisted living, if you just need help buttoning your clothes, then you pay a lot less then if you need a bath and help getting dressed. Even though I am an insulin-dependent diabetic, they automatically put me in the first level of care, so everything is ala carte. I just felt that if I could put that off for as long as I could and save the money, that I’m saving to add to my assets. I’d be much better off down the road when I do have to have assisted living. The people that I came in contact with seemed to be very nice. The residents who hat talked to me said you’ve lot it here. They’re residents who have been there for a long time, so the waiting list is long.
