The Best Senior Living Communities in Springfield, VA

"My friend moved into Harmony at Spring Hill. It's very pretty and clean. The staff that I've dealt with have been very attentive and helpful. There seems to be a lot of activities, like bingo and movies, typically twice a day. They have a little theater room and they pop popcorn and the residents request the movies. They take them out, like yesterday she got to go to WalMart. They take them to WalMart once a month and to the grocery store once a week. She has a studio room. It's small, but a little more than I thought it would be. It's pretty spacious. So far, she says the food has been good. The best part about this place is that she gets to bring her dog."

"We were able to tour Braddock Glen's assisted living. They have a good amount of residents living there. It's not huge, and it's very clean. It has a lot of sitting areas for activities, too. They even offer Chinese food, which is a big plus to Asians. I was there after lunch, so I was not able to see their food, but I saw the menu posted. The staff is also very friendly and professional."

"I found the Paragon Assisted Living Potomac House Communities for my father. It's a group home. He moved in and he loves it -- the best place he's ever lived. This was perfect for him. The staff is great, my father feels very special there, it's very small, only eight residents, so it's very individualized. It's like they really care. He has the same, consistent people all the time. They have a chef who comes in every day and prepares the food. It's a brand-new facility, it's not even a year old. It's well-maintained. They clean the room every day. They have nice, big, open hallways. They have minimal activities, and they could probably do better for people who have the ability to do stuff. They're a great alternative to a bigger facility."

"I toured the assisted living of Spring Hills Mount Vernon. It was set up differently. They had the chef come out and talk to me. The chef had food and fed me, and it was good. The exercise people were there too with all kinds of things going on. They showed me what was happening there. I think they had beauty and a barbershop, too. It was just expensive. The person who gave the tour was very nice. My family was with me and they said it looked really nice. It was more updated and bigger than the other ones we've seen. I felt good about that place. I went to apply and get my funds and stuff going but I didn't have enough money because they kicked up the price. The pricing wasn't good. If these places would come down a little, they'd be more affordable for a lot more people. "

"My overall tour experience of Sunrise of Alexandria's memory care was positive. The facility was conveniently located, and the staff was very accommodating and friendly. My visit was right around when we had a snowstorm so it was kind of inconvenient for them but it did not stop them. They took me through the facility and answered my questions, and I was very pleased with it. I found the rooms to be comfortable, well-thought-out, and well-appointed. A lot of people don't realize the difficulty for aged people to kind of get around and do things and I found that these rooms were geared towards easy access with all their bathrooms and spaces. The staff was very outgoing and friendly. They're willing to answer any questions and I was happy with them. The young lady who was supposed to meet me that day got her car stuck, and so she was running a little late. Another staff member filled in until she was able to show up but I was there in the middle of the snowstorm, too, so I understood it. It would have been easier for them to reschedule because of the snowstorm but they didn't so I thought that was really good of them."

"Rembrandt Assisted Living is a small, eight-person assisted living facility. They offer early memory care but not advanced memory care. It looked like a great facility. It had a real family feel, given how small it is. It's a real tight community feel. The staff was a ratio of 3 to 1, which was just great. I was impressed by the staff ratio. The couple that runs and owns the facility was easy to talk to and was able to answer all my questions. It seems like a nice community. My concern is that because my mother-in-law will at some point need full memory care, it doesn't seem like it's something they could offer if her situation gets much, much worse. I did not try the food, but I saw the dining area. It's very nice. It is a large dining room table. Everyone eats together, and I liked that sense of community and kind of homey feel to it. It was the two owners that gave me the tour, and it's clear that they're passionate about what they do. They were fantastic, and they answered all my questions. I saw a great relationship between them and the residents. The building is a former home that has been turned into an assisted living facility. So, it doesn't have the room and things that some of the large facilities that are specifically built as assisted living do, but they have certainly made it very warm and inviting and fit to purpose."

"We toured here. I chose that because it has quite a few assisted living amenities and is all included in the overall price, which is very good. The staff was excellent. They answered all the questions and even a few more that we asked. They took us to all sorts of studios and one-room apartments. They answered any questions we had about adjusting any elements of the room, like moving a refrigerator around to another location. They were very personable and very helpful. All in all, it was a very good tour, and they included Sunday brunch and it was very nice."

"I toured Benchmark at Alexandria's assisted living last month. They were having a change of staff and were just setting up the facility. We ate lunch there, and it was very tasty and good. They had quite a selection and a variety of food available. As far as the food service, it was really good."

"This is how dementia/elder care should be. My dad, who has dementia of the Alzheimer's type, has been living with me and my wife the past 2 years. He had a very bad experience at a traditional memory care facility prior to living with us, but after 2 years of care my wife and I were in dire need of a vacation and respite care for my dad. We found Tilden House which is much smaller and offers much more personalized care and way better staff/resident ratios than your traditional memory care facility. It feels so much more like being at home because it is an actual home. The staff were also amazing (thank you Wade and Eva!) and took such great care of my dad. After our 2 week vacation, we went to pick up my dad and he had clearly been well taken care of and most importantly, was happy as a clam. When asked if he'd be willing to stay at Tilden House again if we were to take another trip, he said "Sure, I had a good time here. The staff were very nice and make you feel comfortable." but when asked about traditional memory care he says "It was like being in prison." If you have a loved one struggling in a traditional facility, do yourself a favor and check out Tilden. It's the next best thing to home care for your loved ones."

"My uncle moved to Sunrise at Mount Vernon. We chose it for him because it was very inviting when I walked in, the nurse and staff all treated the residents with respect, and the food was good. I got a nice and warm feeling when I went in. My uncle's room is small. It's like a dorm-type, but he has everything in there that he can do, like having a nice-sized bathroom. The only thing that he doesn't care for too much is the shower being low. It's on the floor, and the water comes out. He's very conscientious about that and saying, "Oh, I don't like to take a shower because the water is coming out on the floor.", but I know that the lip is small because they want to use it for wheelchair accessibility. The facility is very clean. They invited us to a nice program for the 4th of July, and the whole family was able to come. It was really nice."

"The Virginian was very nice, but we thought it was a little expensive. It's a beautiful facility. They had great facilities, too. They're just really wonderful. However, we were not happy with the floor plans we looked at. They had a small kitchen area, but we need a little bit more kitchen space than that. They don't have cottages; they're just apartments. The activities were great. They had a beautiful range of activities. The staff was very nice and very accommodating. We enjoyed our visit there, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. It's a couple of thousand a month more than most of the places we looked at. I would love to be there. However, it's a little far away from where we wanted to be. It's half an hour from the doctors, which is not good."

"Sunrise of Fairfax was a big facility, but it seems like they had it planned out for residents who get tired of walking a long way, so they had sitting spaces at regular intervals along the hallways so that elderly residents with mobility issues could pause along the way. It wasn't especially updated. They still had carpeted floorings and the hallways weren't especially spacious. All the people that I met were friendly. The residents that we ran into seemed happy. The dining area was nice and spacious and they had a little separate seating area from the main dining area and there were residents there sitting and just socializing. They also had a library with lots of different types of books and a computer for the residents to use. They were completely full and did not have a room they could show us."

"My brother and I visited Sunrise at Bluemont Park in Arlington and toured their assisted living facility. It was small and intimate, which was nice. The staff seemed to be very friendly and very connected to the residents there. We stayed for a meal, and it was fantastic. I think the only thing that concerned us about that one is that it didn't have a physical therapy facility because it was kind of small. It didn't have a separate exercise area, that type of thing."
