Nursing Home Communities in Havre De Grace, MD

"I had a friend who was at Laurelwood Healthcare Center for 10 weeks. We weren't very happy with the staffing, the pushy business environment, and the lack of support in getting financial assistance. They were pushing for his wife to be there, and it wasn't even appropriate. So, my entire experience with them was negative. I was there almost daily. My friend's room was clean and sparse. Their food was average (I don't think it was any better or worse than anyplace else). The clinical staff seemed great, but the administrative staff was not helpful. They're the ones who were pushy and not really supportive of my friend's situation."

"This facility gives there patients a lot of freedom. Patients are free to roam about the building and can even play games and smoke outside. When you first arrive at the facility it is a plain, brick building surrounded by a little shrubbery. From what I remember there isn't much land. As you are going towards the entrance there are patients out front enjoying the weather. Inside is more like a hospital like atmosphere. The rooms are set up exactly like a hospital. The only difference is there are inside recreation rooms for the patients. It would be more comfortable if each patient had their own room and area for their personal belongings. Overall a good, affordable place to send family members. "

"My mother was in the care of Sandra at Forest Hill Health and Rehab on her last days on earth. Sandra made her happy and comfortable and provided her the best imaginable service. I can't thank her enough for giving my mother the most wonderful possible experience she could have received. She also made me feel comfortable when I wasn't able to be there that she was treated with grace and had someone there to go above and beyond providing her needs. Kristen her nurse was also another fantastic staff member that cared for my mother. She really touched my mother's heart and it was evident that she genuinely cares for her patients. Both of these individuals as well as many others staff members and social workers although I can't remember everyone's name were very kind to my mother and our entire family during a difficult time in our lives. Thank you to the staff on unit 300 for all you have done for the care of my mother. "

"Ware Presbyterian Village is kind of homey. It’s cottage-type and surrounded by some rural areas. The staff is very friendly, very helpful, and try to do whatever they can to please you. I saw the menu and talked to some people who have eaten there and were pleased. They have a fitness center, a swimming pool, and a library. I thought everything just kind of fell into place, so I was very pleased with it. "

"I visited Newark Manor. My dad was also there eight years ago. It's nice, small, and nothing fancy, but they care for their patients. Everything looked very good. The appearance was nice and clean. They have an exercise area."

"Mom chose Cadia Rehabilitation because we have family living in Middletown, and it's close to her home. That was going to be the most convenient for family. It's both a nursing home and a rehab facility. For the most part, we were happy. We thought she got good rehab. She was walking very well when she finished her stay there. We only had one concern and that was because she had gotten a blood clot and there was some confusion about what type of medication she should be on when she left. They were saying that she should be on Coumadin. The doctor that was following her with the blood clot did not prescribe that, and he was not happy that they put her on Coumadin. It was a little bit of a hassle right there at the end when she left. But that was the only issue. The care was good. She felt that they paid good attention to her. It was a lovely facility and we were very pleased with it. "

"I really liked Millcroft. They showed me the open places and gave me a tour of the facility. They have a place for people that need more assisted living and a place for people that can live on their own. Right now, my parents are OK to live on their own. They just need somebody to help fix meals and check to make sure that they're OK. It offers two-week respite instead of having to be there for a month. They have a lot of activities and were geared more to the needs of my parents, so I really enjoyed that place. It looks like one I would probably use. "

"Overall, the quality of the care provided was excellent. Staff were very welcoming to families and very friendly and familiar to residents. The residents were also provided with a well filled activities schedule, though admittedly, there were many repeat events. At one point my grandfather had to be confined to a special section of the assisted living facility because he was trying to escape, more or less. The way in which residents were treated with regards to the door, given that they really did need to be secured in order to ensure their safety, was respectable. Staff joked lightly about the subject with the residents, and did everything in their effort to make it seem as if they were not being held against their will. There came a point where my grandfather could no longer eat solid foods, and at that point it was imperative that he receive a special diet of pureed foods. This facility was able to accommodate him, indeed, going above and beyond to add some culinary zest to the puree. When he got to the point where he could not manage his own hygiene, the nurses managed to make him presentable, and respected his dignity in the process. The ambiance varied drastically from building to building. In the final building where he received the highest levels of care, I found it quite uncomfortable. Indeed, it was very obvious that this was the sort of place that people would never leave from alive. Despite efforts to provide a sun exposure through a skylight, in this particular area it was not sufficient. You could also tell that the staff were suffering from malaise in this particular building as well. Perhaps it cannot be avoided in such a place. I do feel very fortunate that the ambiance was my only complaint. He was well treated and cared for when we could not be there for him. "

"I would actually rate this a zero. The facility is not the cleanest. The front desk is rude. I did encounter some nice people, but not enough to compensate for the bad. Despite these "minor" issues that could be tolerated, this is why I would not put your loved one here. The nurse or tech came to my mom when she rang her bell at night. My mom needed to be changed and was having chest pain. The girl said "what do you want me to do about it, I'm not touching you - you have disease, why do you go to bathroom so much?" (I didn't know about this at that time because she was afraid to tell us thinking they'd be even more mean to her at night when we left) Then, a couple days later I went to see her at night ( I wasn't going to but something told me too) When I got there she said she had been telling them something was wrong with her feeding tube and her throat was burning and she was struggling. I immediately got the nurse after I realized her feeding tube was backing up into her throat and asked that they turn it off and helped her cough it up. At this point she had already started to aspirate on it. I asked that a doctor be called (to which at this time none were there on duty) and 911 was called. She is currently still in the hospital, still fighting. The hospital showed me her bottom side and that this should not have happened and the look on their faces was that of just dismay. I've heard stories about nursing homes but I really never thought it happened or would happen to us. I know each person has their own experience, but ours was not good. Very disappointed that there are people out there like this."

"This facility is the best in Chestertown. They gave my husband hope and a reason for living, the staff is most compassionate, caring and loving we have ever met, the food is the best. I always felt as if the nursing home. was our home, the laughter was so wonderful. Please give this place a chance, it is the very, very best. Unlike other places the nurs.ing staff listens to the patient and the family, they will go out of their to make your stay the best. Thank you to all, for giving my huband and I hope. "

"The location is beautiful and the facility and its ambiance is refined. There are a good amount of things to do--gardening, indoor pool, fitness center. The food at the Skipjack Cafe is pretty good, and the nature trails are peaceful. There are some functions throughout the year, such as a gingerbread house display, which is great for visitors and townies to come and see. The library is great. The only problem is the pricing, but then, there are quite a fair of bonuses to living here. The help is generally good, but may vary from time to time. Pets are also allowed, which is fantastic. "

"I like the surroundings at Glen Meadows, but again very expensive. It’s a very old community, but it would be perfect for where my children live. You have to go outside to where the restaurant would be, which I don’t like. It is an open land -- a lot of beautiful trees, lot of acreage, beautiful view to look at. You have an individual floor plan. It is an old building, they do change things if you want things changed. The view is really beautiful, and from what I can gather from talking to people I know, you buy your place, but then you have that monthly fee, and it is very high. For scenery and for locality, I love the Glen Meadows. I have friends who moved there, and they seemed to be pleased with everything. People that I know are happy with it. "

"Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community is a really nice and well-kept place. If Mom runs out of money, they are not going to kick her out. They do bingo a couple of times a week and trips. They have Ms. Quarryville Pageant and outside people come in to do concerts for them. I would like them to do more daily activities inside the community. They have computers in the assisted living side. The staff is really helpful and taking good care of her. They come and get her when it's time to eat and check on her quite a bit during the day. There are doctors that come in to check on the residents. "

"Ivy Hall was where my mother transitioned to assisted living. Overall, it was very good. The only thing I ever noticed about any of the nursing homes is the smell when you go in. They have a strong urine odor. I would recommend them, but they should improve on the general smell when you walk in the front door. "
