La Grange is a small community in Cook County, Illinois, and it’s a suburb of Chicago. An estimated 2,600 of the village’s 16,000+ residents are retirees aged 65 and older. This tight-knit community sees almost no crime and enjoys around 200 days of sunshine each year. Despite being a small village, La Grange is home to the faith-based AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center La Grange.
Nursing homes provide care to frail seniors who need 24/7 attention and supervision. These facilities have on-site nurses who can manage residents’ medical needs, including chronic illnesses. As older adults who live in these facilities have complex needs, there’s a low staff-to-resident ratio, which is why skilled nursing units are the most expensive type of senior care. In La Grange, the median monthly rate for a semiprivate room is $8,076. More independent seniors might consider assisted living or home care.
This guide provides a comparison of nursing home costs with other types of senior care and other metropolitan areas. It also includes several resources for seniors living in La Grange.

It was a poor choice.

My sister is at the Meadowbrook LaGrange nursing home. They have 2 large parking spaces, one especially for the doctors and then the other one for the visitors. I noticed that and I liked it even though I got lost the first time I was there.
My sister’s room is very, very nice. It has a shower, and a bathroom with a sink even though she doesn’t use it because she cannot walk. It’s all very clean. There’s a bed and two windows in the room, and it’s nice and big.
They have nice nurses. There are a lot of people in and out of her room all the time too for medication or therapy. She’s very happy there. The place is very clean, the employees are very kind, and everybody there is so nice.

My mother was approved for rehab at Oak Trace. I visited the facility. It was everything we were looking for. We are excited about the transition. Oak Trace found out that she needed a series of injections in her knee which would provide stability and allow her to benefit from rehab. We offered to cover the cost of the shots ($1600). They said medicare would not allow us to pay. The day she was scheduled to move the reneged on the placement and we are now scrambling to find another placement.
We found 2 other facilities that will cover the cost but not geographically convenient. They say they are a non-profit but operate more like a for profit corporation. Beware!

You hear some things about nursing homes where they’re not very sanitary or kept up, but this was a very, very clean facility. The people seemed to be caring for their residents. No complaints at all. They were very professional. No type of negative attitude in dealing with them and in speaking with family members. They have a chapel, and they have a couple of areas where the residents can come out of their respective rooms and watch TV. I was satisfied with their services.

My 92 year old mom passed away at this facility 9 months ago On january 18th 2021. She had lost a good portion of her eyesight within 10 months prior to entering this facility. She then had something similar to a stroke. Unable to move for the most part and declined each day. Due to covid I was not able to see her. Trying to reach someone on her floor to either talk to my mom or a staff member was a struggle. The ONLY nurse i was able to reach and had compassion was louis. The floor manager a short young girl had NO COMPASSION at all. When they told us they were putting mom in hospice they told us we could make an appointment for 2 days later to see her. All the floor manager cared about was if mom was still their after 5 more days we would have to pay. We gave her our decision to leave mom at the facility vs risking mom passing away in an ambulance if we brought her home. After we told her our decision all she did was walk away from us. Maybe she will be in the same situation some day. And I hope some day I will see her so I can tell her how I feel to her face. She is a disgrace to that facility.

While a lot of hospitals have done away with skilled care units on site, Rush Oak Park has maintained theirs. This is a unit licensed as skilled nuring beds, just like a nursing home, but within the hospital. This offers a nice alternative typically for elderly people who need sub-acute level rehab and therapy that allows them to potentially avoid having to go to a nursing home to receive it. Therapy services here are less intense than one is required to participate in when in the acute level rehab program, which is also available at the hospital. Rush Oak Park Hospital is on the western edge of Oak Park, readily accessible by public transit and close to the expressway. The skilled care unit is on the fifth floor and residents do not typically venture off the unit during their stay. The unit offers a large dining room and has a nicely appointed therapy area, but no real common areas for visiting. The rooms are typical hospital rooms which are set up for two beds, but are often only utilized for one person per room, which is nice for the patients. The food is average hospital fare, and sometimes patients complain that it offers too little variety. The staff is overall fantastic, and tend to have less turnover than one would find in many nursing home rehab units. Care rendered is kind, compassionate and appropriate. For people hoping to get home after rehab, they are fortunate if they are able to take advantage of this program.

After we got past ourselves, we saw the staff in action, we as a family we can now say, our Mom is being well taken care of and her quality of life has improved 100%. We are grateful and we let the staff know. I will say this you can place your love one in a million dollar facility, if you do not let the staff know how important that person is to you by how you visit and how you care, what do you expect. They will care like you do. That is what you want.Again we as a family are very pleased with Weschester Health and Rehabilitation Center. My Mom’s room is quaint. The rooms are very clean, no harsh smells, the grounds were beautiful during the summer, plenty activities. Nice place.

My mother was in the rehab facility for about four weeks and finally was discharged a few days ago. She had fallen and broken her hip and was placed here after her surgery for rehab. She had previously had mobility issues but was making progress until her fall. She is not a typical patient however. Her medical history over the last year is about 10x more than a normal person her age. This is due to her multiple rounds of chemo and finally a stem cell transplant to combat against the Leukemia. She is on a large regimen of drugs to prevent rejection, GVHD, and infections. These meds are critical to her continued recovery. Having said that…
Day 1 – 3 were incredibly stressful for her here. Her medical history was not accurately conveyed to this facility and this facility was slow to respond. By around day 3 we finally got everyone on the same page and her meds were being accurately dispersed to her. Her transplant team was also looped in and setup to receive the blood work on a regular basis to ensure no issues with her stem cell transplant.
Since she was here for rehab for a broken hip, we thought that is what would be occurring. On Day 1, we were told that since she never had a covid booster shot, she would be isolated in her room for 10 days, no PT or OT. First off, that is ridiculous. Second, she CAN’T receive a booster shot as she is immunocompromised. She had a two dose vaccine and later after her stem cell treatment, an antibody treatment for covid that is safe for immunocompromised individuals. This facility did not accept either of these points and she had to wait 10 full days to get into the PT gym. Now, they did end up doing some walking and light PT with her in the hallways as this place is a ghost town.
After Day 3 to around maybe the 12 day or so, my mom reported that they were slow to respond to calls. Slow to disperse medicine. Not managing her diabetes correctly, and a slew of other issues. Now, I can’t say for sure if she is correct as her memory tends to go when she is stressed, however I did witness the slow responses to calls. Seems like they are understaffed or do not particularly care.
After she was out of isolation, she was finally doing PT in a gym with someone who she really liked.
One glaring issue that popped up was her lack of movement. They didn’t want her getting up and using the bathroom on her or and later in her stay didn’t want her using a walker, only a wheelchair. What kind of a "rehab" place encouraged lack of mobility? This one. You know the reason? Insurance. They don’t have the staff to help your loved ones feel more independent. Oh, and that rehab with the PT people…20 minutes top of light exercises. I witnessed that.
Food was fine. Rooms were ok. Facility is old. Lack of upfront parking. Spaces for doctors that are NEVER THERE and NEVER RETURN CALLS.
They will keep your loved ones in a bed for 23 hours a day and not think twice about it. That is the truth about this "rehab" place. Luckily my mom got out and is somewhat mobile with a walker. Now she has to find an at home PT person to make some actual progress.
Think twice about sending your loved ones here. They are NOT for rehab.

I was in Bethesda Rehab & Senior Care two months ago. That place wasn’t that big but they were nice and friendly. It’s not as fancy, but it’s very clean. If you don’t like their food, they will get you what you want to eat, and they will make it for you.
They have everything. You could use the Internet, and you could even hook the internet up on your TV, so you have a bigger screen. Everything you need there, they have. If you need something that they don’t have, they will go out and get it for you. If you like ice cream every day, they’ll serve you ice cream even in the morning, serve you anything you want.
That facility to me was probably one of the best. It’s not as fancy as the one I am in right now, but it’s not horrible looking either. They had the friendliest staff I ever met, even from the nurses, the doctors, all the way down to the CNA. They go around, they joke with you, and they make you feel at home.
They have all kinds of activities, and you could do a lot of things. I just got out of there like two months ago, some of those things are limited because of the Covid 19, which most of the other places have as well.
It’s a very good area and very safe. It has a huge parking lot. So, if you have visitors and they could come in and visit, you don’t need to worry about parking. It’s a very unusual building looking from the outside, but it’s very clean. What I mean by unusual is it has a different architecture.

My mother was a patient at manorcare. She was going to have 2 weeks of physical therapy and then home.,but her dementia got worse and we knew that was not going work.
She received excellent care, thanks to the staff who were always respectful, and the manager Victoria She is so caring about not only one person but all the patients. She really put my mom at ease when she left.
I also wanted to say that Steve is the best representative of your business. The first thing you see is his smiling face, he is also very nice about answering your questions.
I have come to realize that when you see happy, efficient employees, they have a good hands on manager like Victoria!

My brother is currently staying at Grove of Berwyn. I can’t go in there, we’re not allowed in. The staff member said when I dropped things off for him they had to have a paper signed for that. The staff has always been nice, I could say that. The social worker, kind of overworked, it took a while to get all the paperwork done, but she did it and we did speak, and I understand when someone has a lot on their plate because I think she works at different facilities. Just for the fact that it is a nursing home, there’s nothing there for him to do. With nice weather they would let him stand out at the back chairs that they got there. They were taking him to his VA appointments, his medical appointments, and everything. On the whole, I think they’re probably better than some nursing homes I heard complaints about, because my brother’s not really complaining other than that he wants to get out of there because there’s nothing to do, so I guess I would say they’re OK. I have nothing to say negative about them. I’m kind of neutral because all of the staff that I talked to were all very nice. They do not have any activities that I know of, there’s nothing going on there. Every now and then they have a, I want to say therapist, not that he needs therapy, but they would take him out of the room for exercising so he walks around. There’s no reason, physically, for him to be there, mentally either. He just loves to walk around and they had him lifting weights. I thought they might have been based more on somebody that comes to do therapy with other patients and they just kind of dragged him to do some stuff so that he wasn’t just sitting there comatose.

Oakbrook Healthcare Centre is the facility my mother-in-law was released from and now she’s going back in to do some rehab. They’re going to see if she’ll stay there or in the other facilities that would be good for the family to look at.
She was already there. She was in the hospital for a week and then she was transferred from the hospital to Oakbrook for rehab. She was there for almost 3 weeks, and then she just was released last Saturday and now she’s going back in.
It was chosen based on proximity. We toured it and it was fine, but it was also based on proximity to the family since it’s kind of close.
The place seems clean, it doesn’t smell, and the staff is friendly. It met all my mother-in-law’s needs.
The food seems not that great but it was fine. It just didn’t have much flavor. We sat with her at dinnertime and we tasted the food. It was a kind of mass-produced food.
She had a lovely private room, it was very nice, and kept up very nicely. She was in a portion in the facility where they had games to stimulate them, TV, and music.
For rehab, she was doing some activity to strengthen her because she broke her hip so they were trying to strengthen her ability to walk. They did things but it was kind of hard to gauge whether they were engaging everybody including those with memory issues. I know the staff was trying though.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in La Grange, IL
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
