I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My parents were at The Bristal at York Avenue. They were only there for a bit, and then they wanted to come down to Florida with me. My dad enjoyed it. He did the activities, and he always joined in. My mother was miserable though. The last couple of years, all she did was scream at him. She lost her sister about four years ago and just went downhill from there. She refused to eat, and she refused to go out. There were activities, and my dad did everything. He loved it there. They all went down for dinner. However, my mom didn't like it, and she was like that. The people who work there seemed very nice. They come in and check on them. My parents had a nice room. They had a bathroom, a living room, and a bedroom. It was nice. It's just my mom didn't like it. My dad would go to shows. I also think they went to the park one day to see a movie or something. My mother didn't do any of that, but my dad did. The upkeep of the place was OK. It was kept clean. They had to wash their own clothes though. The washing machine worked, but the dryers didn't.

My mother is there, I would move her if I could. We've already paid the community fee (which many facilities waive), and more change would be hard for my 99 year-old mother. The staff turnover is a joke; I think there is only one person here who was on staff when my mother came 5 months ago. I think there have been 3 "executive directors" in that time. The front desk rarely answers, hard to find anyone on the weekend. Lots of explanations of how it will be better soon, no real results. Expensive, don't go there. I'm angry enough to write this review.

I visited this facility

We like the Bristal at York Avenue. We liked the rooms and we also liked that every floor had a communal area and a terrace on it for everybody to use. We also liked it because it was smaller. It was one of the smallest ones we saw. The others seem large and more like hotels. They have a nurse there all the time, and from what we could see there were several people in wheelchairs, so it's assisted living that we saw. They have a microwave and a small refrigerator in the room. The staff who toured me around was very informative and obviously knew what was going on in the Bristal. She knew how to present it. It's a beautiful new building.
