For the most part, nursing staff (registered nurses) are very good and caring. Orderlies (those that watch the residents and help them on a daily basis) are going to be a hit and miss. Mosts seems to be there to collect a paycheck, do what is minimum and that’s it. I’m guessing it’s the same everywhere else. The food service people in my opinion are the worse. Most go about their duties like the “soup man” on Seinfeld. Don’t touch anything in their areas, and asking for anything, responses are generally like you’re bothering them ( they can definitely use some training in dealing with people). Meanwhile, leftover snacks goes with them, so it seems, like no one sees it. Food quality is nothing to write home about, meats are overcook and tough, people who can’t chew or swallow certainly can eat it. Cleaning crew are good, place is kept relatively clean, no complaints.

My mother in law was diagnose by burst apendix but she did not undergo through surgery, she is 79 years old and so weak, so she diagnose through IV medline for 20 days after she confined at Beth Israel hospital for 13 days we recomend her to stay at Governeur nursing home, me and my husband are so impress the way they accomodate my mother in law, the nurses are very active, they check my mom on time, they give her medicine on time, they check her vitals everyday and they make sure they rehabilitate her correctly, the staff are so friendly, from cleaners to the cook, nursing aids and nurses, and so the doctors too, the office staff they were so nice, they give exact intructions for her medications when we ready to check out. I highly recomend this nursing home. My mom now shes already home and very energetic. My mom said she miss all the staff at the Gorverneurs maybe one day she will visit them.

The staff and social workers were very committed the making sure that my great aunt had everything she needed. My aunt was able to effectively communicate with the staff despite her inability to speak English, as many of the staff were multilingual and could speak Chinese, Spanish, etc. There were various scheduled recreational activities, and I witnessed an amusing game involving beach ball being played. In addition, there was a performer who would occasionally come to play music for the residents, and the residents seemed to enjoy it. The staff were exceedingly patient with my aunt, making sure she was eating well and living well. The workers ensured that the food was in a form that my aunt could eat (often mashed thoroughly) and she never complained about its taste. In addition, the nurses were friendly and competent and the social workers were very accessible and efficient. Sometimes my aunt complained that the temperature was uncomfortable and that it was too cold, but she said it was bearable.

I volunteered at the Governeur Healthcare Center for two summers. The staff in certain departments was very friendly, and seemed to genuinely care about the elders who lived there. People in the Therapeutic Recreation department formed friendships with residents and talked to them every day, and played games with them. People in the Occupational Therapy department were also very nice and gentle with recovering patients. However, the nurses were not very helpful. They did not care about helping residents and ignored many of the residents requests. For example, a resident would really want to take a bath and the nurse would just keep putting it off. The food provided to the residents was fair. It didn't seem very appetizing, but a good amount was given, and most residents ate it without complaining. The hospital was well ventilated and air conditioned, but sometimes too cold for the residents. There was also a television for the residents to watch in the monitor room, and lots of events going on all the time, planned by the Recreation department.
