The Heritage is an independent living facility founded by Norwegian ladies just over a century ago. It has no memory care and mostly a la carte health services. A monthly fee for something like 25 lunches is required, as is a minimum nursing service. There is no dinner service but there is a free daily continental breakfast. It is served by three different health plans such as HP.. It is an old building, but recently remodeled. The Heritage is one of several parts of a very large campus covering a whole city block and connected by under ground tunnels. There is transitional care on the SE end, a large subsidized residence on the SW end, and nursing care on the NE end. The Heritage is on the NW end with over view of the Parkway. The State Fair entrance is just west and Como Park just east by half a block. Residents vary in function and health from outstanding to shut-ins and there is significant turnover through death and transfer to nursing care. Waiting list is long, but there is often the possibility of jumping place when people say they are not yet ready to move there. If you enter transitional care from a hospital, this gives you some priority to enter the Heritage directly from their transitional service. The refundable fee to get on the wait list is relatively high. Sunday services are offered in a beautiful chapel in the center of the complex. There are three admin staff outside of the dining service. A very basic room service is given once a month that includes a small amount of laundering. It has the feel of a smaller residence.

My wife was at Lyngblomsten for about 10 days, and that was an interesting experience. We are on the waitlist there for an individual to move there. It is a multi-level facility, from independent to assisted to memory care and to full nursing care. The transitional care unit, which was attached to the nursing home facility, it had some things that needed improvement -- both the physical facility and the care. They do a number of things quite well. Cleanliness was quite good.

What was really good in The Heritage was that the apartment was bigger and the chef was impressive. He worked on everyone's dietary needs. You were not tied-in to three meals a day. You could pick the number of meals that you want during the month. It looked older, but it was clean and well kept. There was a lot of tunnels and locking system. They had a lot of transportation available to the people living there so they could go where they wanted to go. What knocked them down is that they were farther away than what my mom would have been comfortable with. However, during our visit the staff was superb. They treated us very, very well.
