Saint Paul Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Saint Paul:

Weatherization Program CareNextion

Address: 85 7th Place E, Suite 280, St. Paul, MN 55101
Phone Number: (651) 539-1500

This program is funded by the US Department of Energy and supplemented by the state of Minnesota. It provides free home energy upgrades to eligible homeowners and renters. Priority is given to senior citizens and households with children under the age of 12. Potential energy upgrades include air leakage reduction, water heater repair or replacement, attic insulation and ideas to help reduce household energy usage. A free home energy assessment is conducted on all qualifying households to see if cost-effective energy improvements will reduce the current energy bill.

Transportation

Address: 1645 Marthaler Lane, West St. Paul, MN 55118
Phone Number: (651) 455-1560

DARTS is a nonprofit organization that provides wheelchair-friendly transportation services to seniors in the greater St. Paul area. The program aims to help seniors continue to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Door-to-door transport is provided to medical appointments, restaurants and grocery stores. Transport needs to be booked at least a day in advance to allow buses to be scheduled. There is a charge for each trip, but discounts are available for seniors with limited incomes, and donations are always welcome.

Meals on Wheels

Address: 451 Lexington Parkway North, Saint Paul, MN 55104
Phone Number: (651) 280-2000

The Wilder Foundation is a nonprofit organization that runs a meals on wheels program in Saint Paul. The program is funded by community donations and there is a small charge for each meal. Seniors who cannot afford the meals can apply for a discount or to receive their meals for free but proof of income is required. A group of volunteers delivers the meals to seniors throughout the Saint Paul area on a daily basis. The menus are reviewed by a dietician, and a wide range of special diets can be accommodated.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
