Nearly 117,000 people call Clearwater, FL, home, and 23% of the city’s population are seniors aged 65 and older. With its significant population of seniors and retirees, it’s no surprise that Florida ranks as the nation’s second-oldest state. Yet, despite its high senior population and this demographic’s predisposition to Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, Alzheimer’s-related deaths in Clearwater decreased by >-20.04% between 2016 and 2020. Looking ahead to the future, though, this trend is likely to reverse. Alzheimer’s ranks as the seventh leading cause of death in the county, and 12.7 million Americans are projected to develop the disease by 2050.
Alzheimer’s currently has no cure. However, Clearwater’s seniors are well-served by a number of memory care communities in the area. With well-researched therapies and thoughtfully trained staff, memory care communities offer a secure environment designed with the needs of seniors in the later stages of memory-loss disorders in mind. Families in Clearwater can use this guide to help navigate memory care options in the area and compare average costs.

Traci, another member of the administrative team met with my brother in person and I (on face-time) and took us for a tour. They talked us through every step to make this transition as seamless as possible.
Once my mom arrived she was greeted by many caring staff members that are able to work through her stubborn moods brought on by her Alzheimer’s and encourage the happy and lively person she is naturally. The live music twice a day has absolutely been a highlight for her since she loves singing and dancing. The past few weeks I personally have visited the facility and can attest to the individual care the staff provides all of the residents.

The lobby area was very comfortable. There was a piano and stuff there. Up in the actual memory care area, they had several different areas. There was a room for just conversing and talking. They had a kitchen dining area where they could sit down if company came and have a meal together. Then there was another area for watching television. So, they had several open areas for doing activities that were inside, as well as a courtyard with fountains that they could go outside and enjoy. It was beautiful. Everything was very clean. Benefits and Drawbacks of Memory Care in Clearwater
- Sperling’s BestPlaces’ Health Care Cost Index for Clearwater is 103.7, slightly exceeding Florida’s average of 102.3. However, other costs, such as transportation, are significantly lower, and the overall average cost of living index of 99.1 is notably below Florida’s 103.1. This suggests that Clearwater’s elders get more for their money than the average Floridian.
- Clearwater’s older residents are well served by the region’s medical facilities, which include Morton Plant Hospital, ranked No. 2 in Central Florida and No. 7 in the entire state by U.S. News and World Report. Across the bay in Tampa, elders can also receive outstanding care at Tampa General Hospital, which is rated the best in Central Florida and No. 3 in the state.
- Clearwater’s crime rates are higher than the U.S. averages, but effective policing over the past 10 years has seen a dramatic decline in the number of violent and property crimes in the area. Families concerned about crime in the city may be pleased to know that memory care communities must have strict security in place to get their licenses, including surveillance cameras and controlled entry/exit doors.
- The narrow gap between winter and summer temperatures is one of the most senior-friendly aspects of the area, as winter lows are around 52 degrees and summer highs are approximately 90. Consequently, Clearwater’s elders don’t experience temperature extremes. High rainfall in summer causes humidity levels to rise to uncomfortable levels, but those drop to near normal the rest of the year.
- Sperling’s BestPlaces gives Clearwater an above-average Health Cost Index of 98.5/100. This is in part due to the good quality of air coming in off the Gulf and the city’s success in cleaning contaminated land as part of the EPA’s Superfund program. It’s also because Clearwater has 273 physicians per 100,000 people, which is 63 more than the U.S. average.
- Clearwater residents aged 65+ qualify for reduced-fare rides on PSTA’s regular bus routes, which operate throughout Pinellas County. Buses are wheelchair-accessible, so seniors with disabilities can also take advantage of the service.
