The Best Independent Living Communities in San Luis Obispo County, CA

"My mother-in-law will be moving into Avila Senior Living at Downtown San Luis Obispo. They're still remodeling. They have independent rooms, they also have assisted living. We toured the studios and the 1-bedrooms. The only place we didn't tour was the memory care because they're remodeling that. It's very homey, very comfortable, the remodeling that they're doing right now is very beautiful. The staff came up and introduced themselves, even when they're going past us in the hallway. They were very, very welcoming, and it seemed that's the way they are with the residents also. It was very nice. The rooms are very nice, roomy, and seemed to have everything that you would need. they had a couple of different models with the showers that we like. The food was excellent. We had a chef's very good salad, my mom tried a meat dish which she said was very good. We had a very good meal. I talked to the residents who ate there also, and they said that the food is really good."

"The atmosphere and the environment of Las Brisas were relaxed. There was not too much activity really going on at that point when I stepped in there. I know they have regular events, but I didn't see any of that. I checked out two rooms in there, and the size is ample. It is pretty good. The on-site supervisor was really nice, very informative, courteous, and considerate. From what I saw, it was nice and clean, and the doors were open. You'd come and go as you please. They had a nice kitchen and nice facilities there. They look out for their client's best interest."

"I went with a friend to visit their father. The rooms were homey and clean. Staff very caring. My friends Dad said he was happy here."

"I went to The Oaks at Nipomo. I like how they help them out, even though each person's living mostly on their own, they still kind of check-in, make sure they're okay helping out with their laundry, helping out with the small things, and just sitting down and talking with them. They know everything that's going on with everybody. It was great. It was clean. I mean, I didn't have any problems with it. I liked everything about it. The food that they showed us was better than what I'd eaten. They have outings, they have movie nights, and they watch the Super Bowl. They have a church, they have so many little living rooms for everybody and just kind of inclusive. It's great."

"The Villages is a very active community. It's independent living, and several members of our church are living there out of choice. One friend of ours is living there because she is elderly, and her family did not want her to drive anymore, but she is still well enough that we pick her up twice a week and take her to handbell practice. Sometimes our handbells go there and play, particularly at Christmas time. There is a transport van that takes them to church and takes them to rehearsals, as well as to doctors and everything else. Those people who drive the vans really care about their members. They wait outside while they're having coffee after church, and they're totally involved with the community. The meals are really good, according to my friend. She also loves not having to cook anymore. The accommodations are nice. The rooms are kind of small, but you can have one- or two-bedrooms, whatever you prefer. The grounds themselves are beautiful. There is a pool and an exercise room. I don't interact with the staff very much because they are such independent people living there, but those that I have seen are really nice. The grounds are limited. It's just a parking lot all the way around them, but there's a grocery store across the street and places they can eat that are close if they want to eat out. However, if they have a dog, you just have to walk them on cement. There are not many grounds. I think they do field trips occasionally, but none of my friends take them because they're so active. However, I see the van bopping around town. They have several vans, as a matter of fact."

"We toured Atascadero Christian Community and are waiting for a room to become available. We chose it because of the friendliness of the staff and the perfect accommodations. Overall, it was the best we’ve looked at. They had an exercise room, arts and crafts room, a beautiful outdoor facility with big deck chairs, Wi-Fi throughout the place, and private dining rooms for visiting families. "
