I am/was a resident of this facility

Glastonbury Health Center has an excellent staff that is truly caring and professional. The nursing staff was very Attentive and took the time to explain all questions The physical/occupational therapy department made it possible for me to rehab to the point that I could return to my home. I really feel that everyone at GHC was sincerely interested in my quick recovery and rehab..

I am/was a resident of this facility

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I was a recent short term rehab patient for 2 weeks. My sons could not visit me due to COVID. I did not like the rehab and I did not make much progress. My sons told me they only had 1 phone conversation with rehab and never were spoken to by a doctor or nurse until the day of my discharge. The center recommended to my sons to consider hospice care. They agreed and I was accepted. However, I was unaware of this and my son told me he wanted to speak to me about it. The center told him they could not arrange a face to face meeting because they were booked and only arranged a phone conversation. I am wear hearing aids and my son was considered I wouldn't understand. Hospice contacted my son and was concerned as well. They arranged for a compassionate visit for my son to see me. I agreed to hospice. My son then told me hospice asked him to call the center to arrange to have a medical procedure done. My son told me it was the night before that he called. He couldn't speak to a supervisor he was told because it was too chaotic at the moment. He was not called until 3 hours before my discharge telling him it was too late to do the procedure and it was really hospice's responsibility. They also said my son he had to manage a wound I have from a previous procedure. Again no doctor or nurse told my son in advance about this. My son also told me they said they would email the discharge papers to him but didn't attach the files. He had to email them again asking for them. Finally, the center lost one of my hearing aids. The ambulance crew who were to transport me home noticed I only had one and told my son they searched the room and asked a nurse for assistance. No help. When my son emailed the center about this, they said they would look but that the transfer nurse said I had them. I do not. I am extremely happy to be home and out of that facility.

If quality care is important for your elderly loved one, do NOT choose this facility for rehabilitation. Our experience was for short term (4 weeks) rehab care. The only redeeming factor was the Physical Therapy Department. The social worker is inept, the nursing staff incompetent and inappropriate at times, leaves SO much to be desired, not even to mention the "doctor". The food, I'm told was barely tolerable and the building and rooms dirty. NOT a good experience!

The only reason this review has one star is because there were some very caring nurses, aides, PT and OT’s that were doing their best with what they had to work with. (You know who you are, and I thank you for advising me to hurry up and get him out of there, you probably saved my dad’s life) -My father was admitted after a hospital stay for rehab. He was quite disoriented when he got there due to being elderly and having slight delirium from being in hospital for a week. He kept trying to get out of bed (bed bars, alarms are not allowed in nursing homes any more) top administrator assured us they would change his bed to a “scoop” style bed, put mats down on sides of bed, and have 15 minute bed checks before we left for the night. When I arrived the following a.m. NOT one of the above was done. He went from being able to walk with assistance to bed bound and incoherent in 4 days. -Another morning I arrived and he had fecal matter stains all over his hands and under his nails, and had been laying in a soiled diaper for quite some time. They were about to serve him breakfast without cleaning him up first. I had to find the new morning nurse and show her his condition. -Due to low blood pressure drops he was not able to lay flat and needed oxygen. I arrived this morning at 7:30 to find him legs elevated, head of bed down and his oxygen cannula was off. His health had deteriorated so badly that we had to return him to the hospital immediately. Hospital found him dehydrated, under oxygenated, and in very poor condition. He is currently in a step down unit from ICU and hopefully will be able to recover from this. -I would not recommend this place for your loved ones. Added 12/16-Unfortunately, my dad passed away today. **I find it interesting that the facility is contacting people to write a review-speaks volumes. I am looking forward to my survey from the state.

I had a family member who was here for long term care and it was the worst experience of my life. I visited weekly and saw a lot of things... Patients crying to go to the bathroom and the aids hiding at the end of the halls ignoring them. They claim to be capable of handling dementia patients but the only thing they do for them is neglect them. They rarely offer water probably so they will not have to take them to the bathroom. The food is also terrible. Their is no quality of life here for the residents. Way to many residents to aids/nurses ratios and heaven help them if they get put in the VIP room...30 to 1... The nurses were miserable and most of the aids avoided you like the plague. If you are looking for long term care for a loved one keep looking. Once you get them here it is almost impossible to get them transferred to another place. Substandard care...If i could give less than 1 star I would.

If you are under 60 and just here for short term rehab not a good place to be no activitys based on people under 65 most people here are long term elderly residents. Short staffed most of time staff ana adminstration not very caring also u can not use your own doctors here. Because the facility's got 3 or 4 doctors that make changes to your medication I have had a health care scare that nearly ended my life no one should recive such lack of care or concern. I am looking for a nother health care facilitie to move to closer to my home in manchester My family and freinds and long term health care providersare very dissapointed in Athena for having such a lack of profelionship at this facility

Glastonbury Health Care Center is very good. The staff is excellent. The nurses, the aides, the personnel, the social director, and the financial office are really helpful. They've helped us an awful lot and they tended to all our needs, as well as those of my mother. The place is very nice, they keep it extremely clean, and they're always available. The food looks good, but she finds it bland, and I suspect that's because they don't put a lot of salt in their food. It's been about two months since she moved in.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I spent a few days at this facility for rehab/PT after a recent hospital stay. I was never formally checked in by a staff member or given any type of orientation/greeting- just put in a room. Lucky to get a pitcher of water. Nurses were obviously overworked and not the least bit friendly. The food was absolutely disgusting and the room was not that clean. Luckily, I was fairly self sufficient. I would not have stayed another day regardless- I can't imagine being bed ridden in that facility. I would strongly suggest you consider other facilities/providers before GHC/Athena Healthcare- it may be located in a very nice town but don't be fooled- it is a sad excuse for modern, professional health care.

Frustrated with parent's care

Medications are never on time. 3 days in a row missed medications for my mother in Long term care wing. Supposed to have no meds during meals because she throws them up, but IF she gets them, it's always then, with the expected results. Some days no meds entire shift. Extremelyy inconsistent medication timing. Very frustrated with this place , If you have someplace else to place your parent, do it. Cleanliness isn't everything. Need more CNA's and LPN's on staff. Ones they have don't have the time to do more for your loved one than the bare minimum, and it's not their fault. For prrofit, and it shows. .Business always bought and sold quickly for profit. Notice other listings on internet with different owners? Names barely up on front board and they're already changing them. Ask them, " How many owners have there been in these last 5 years?" This place is excellent for short term rehab only. I can recommend them for that only at this time. Will change review for long term parent care if it improves.

I visited this facility

I recently stayed here for 7 days and would like to share my experience. The facility is very clean and the care is Exceptional. The nurses are top notch and the assistants are very attentive to your every need. The physical therapy personnel are some of the best in the area and got me on my feet very quickly. They are understanding of your pain and transition your movement with great care and professionalism. The food is much better than can be expected and they do try to make every effort to satisfy your tastes. Keep in mind they are cooking for a lot of folks who are on a restricted diet, but they are more than willing to work with you on this. When you need something and "Hit the Button" the assistants are there very quickly and relay any info to the nurse promptly or get you anything you may need. The rooms are very comfortable but keep in mind there are no private rooms so you must be able to share a room. That being said you should ensure that you are able to co-habitat with your new roommate, they will move you if you are having issues but understand that they only have so much room and any changes should be made quickly. I would go back there myself or "Put" a loved one in here knowing that they are going to be WELL taken care of. I give this a GO TO PLACE for any after surgery issues you may have. Jeff Murray. Stayed 3/10/17 - 3/17/17

I am a friend or relative of a resident

Glastonbury Health Care Center was one of the smaller nursing homes with short-term rehab, which my mother had started out in and then she ended up in the long-term part of the facility. The staff was wonderful, very nice there, and answered questions readily. They were very sympathetic and understood what was going on. They treated her very well, and we were very happy with the care that she received. She shared a room with another woman initially. The room was on the small side, and she wasn't on the window side, so that was hard for her, but we could put her in the wheelchair and wheel her down into the lounge room. They had a sunroom, which was a really nice part of the facility. The food was very typical hospital food. She didn't eat all that much when she was in the long-term part of it. She liked the desserts mostly. She was on a soft food diet, so everything was chopped very finely. She did tell me that some of the food was good. She received occupational therapy and physical therapy every day, and they were very good. The recreation director came in and asked me a lot of questions. She was very nice and very thorough about patients' likes and dislikes and former jobs and activities, trying to find out what they were like.
