Assisted Living Communities in Springfield, VA

"I went to see Braddock Glen's assisted living on behalf of my uncle. It's like a hotel or a resort without a swimming pool. I think it's nice and welcoming. It's a rustic classic type of housing. It's like a colonial home type of style. I feel pretty much at home. I toured inside the dining room, the little library, the hallway, and one of those rooms that a resident allowed us to go into. The room is airy and convenient. One room is sufficient enough for one individual with everything inside. It has a small bedroom with a bathroom right next to it, a little kitchenette, and a table with a window looking into the courtyard. It's almost like the ground floor level of any hotel, with all the convenience within reach. I don't see any need for additional things. I think the staff is excellent. I only talked to one lady and she is the most courteous lady I have talked to in terms of senior living staff, and I have met several. She is awesome. I saw the property dining area with tables, tablecloths, and decorations for Halloween. Everything's set up for lunch or probably dinner but I only passed through it. I saw a full suite of menus for the whole week. It's well thought out, and I'm sure the food would be decent. I did not see anybody there doing activities. I came in the morning on Saturday so maybe it's not the right time for people to come out of their rooms. Only a few people were sitting and reading newspapers, looking out the window."

"I found the Paragon Assisted Living Potomac House Communities for my father. It's a group home. He moved in and he loves it -- the best place he's ever lived. This was perfect for him. The staff is great, my father feels very special there, it's very small, only eight residents, so it's very individualized. It's like they really care. He has the same, consistent people all the time. They have a chef who comes in every day and prepares the food. It's a brand-new facility, it's not even a year old. It's well-maintained. They clean the room every day. They have nice, big, open hallways. They have minimal activities, and they could probably do better for people who have the ability to do stuff. They're a great alternative to a bigger facility."

"My brother moved here after a 4 month stay in a dreadful place in Stephens City (near Winchester). He is fairly independent, so he doesn't need a lot of care, so I can't comment on the level of care provided by the CNAs. However, from what I've seen, it is good. (Certainly I haven't heard anyone be mean!) Spring Hills is way, way better than my brother's former residence. He likes the fact that you can order from a menu, order as much as you like, and order sodas if you want. He also likes the fact that the food is served for several hours at a time rather than having to sit down to eat "supper" exactly at 5 every night as before. (Food was poor at other place - for example, supper consisted of a sandwich and soup, plus lemonade and dessert.) The staff seems great, his studio apartment is small but comfortable, and there are activities for him, although as a fairly young man, many don't appeal much to him. The community counselor takes him out to lunch every month or two, and the shuttle takes him to medical appointments. I didn't think we could afford Spring Hills, but the community counselor was terrific and worked with us so that we could. They involve me in formulating a care plan, which I like, and keep me informed of anything I should know. I feel that I can call them whenever necessary, and that I will get a response. Overall, I would rate this facility somewhere between a 4 and 5, although it is only the second assisted living facility I've visited, so I don't have a lot of experience with them (luckily!) "

"I went to Sunrise of Alexandria as it was recommended to us. The staff was very friendly, welcoming, and eager to work for my situation. The rooms that I saw were very nice; it was a little too small for my needs as my parents are still together, but it would be fine for a single person. The dining room looked lovely and had a good menu. I saw a calendar with the menu of activities that looked very nice; I didn’t see any going on, but I did see people socializing in common areas, which I really liked. It felt more like a big home than an institution. The people are conscientious of what’s going on, and the memory care ward was secured "

"Rembrandt Assisted Living is a small, eight-person assisted living facility. They offer early memory care but not advanced memory care. It looked like a great facility. It had a real family feel, given how small it is. It's a real tight community feel. The staff was a ratio of 3 to 1, which was just great. I was impressed by the staff ratio. The couple that runs and owns the facility was easy to talk to and was able to answer all my questions. It seems like a nice community. My concern is that because my mother-in-law will at some point need full memory care, it doesn't seem like it's something they could offer if her situation gets much, much worse. I did not try the food, but I saw the dining area. It's very nice. It is a large dining room table. Everyone eats together, and I liked that sense of community and kind of homey feel to it. It was the two owners that gave me the tour, and it's clear that they're passionate about what they do. They were fantastic, and they answered all my questions. I saw a great relationship between them and the residents. The building is a former home that has been turned into an assisted living facility. So, it doesn't have the room and things that some of the large facilities that are specifically built as assisted living do, but they have certainly made it very warm and inviting and fit to purpose."

"We toured here. I chose that because it has quite a few assisted living amenities and is all included in the overall price, which is very good. The staff was excellent. They answered all the questions and even a few more that we asked. They took us to all sorts of studios and one-room apartments. They answered any questions we had about adjusting any elements of the room, like moving a refrigerator around to another location. They were very personable and very helpful. All in all, it was a very good tour, and they included Sunday brunch and it was very nice."

"My mom was a resident of Benchmark at Alexandria. I liked that it was very new, and everyone was very knowledgeable and helpful. The facility was very clean. It had a sort of hotel-like feel. It's a long but not wide building, so the floor was just this big corridor, and at the end, there was a larger room where you could do stuff. It's not like some other places I might describe as a really big house. It was more like a facility. It was very expensive, but everyone at her level of care was about the same price, or at least there wasn't anyone significantly cheaper in this type of larger facility. The rooms were a decent size, and the layout was easy to understand."

"This is how dementia/elder care should be. My dad, who has dementia of the Alzheimer's type, has been living with me and my wife the past 2 years. He had a very bad experience at a traditional memory care facility prior to living with us, but after 2 years of care my wife and I were in dire need of a vacation and respite care for my dad. We found Tilden House which is much smaller and offers much more personalized care and way better staff/resident ratios than your traditional memory care facility. It feels so much more like being at home because it is an actual home. The staff were also amazing (thank you Wade and Eva!) and took such great care of my dad. After our 2 week vacation, we went to pick up my dad and he had clearly been well taken care of and most importantly, was happy as a clam. When asked if he'd be willing to stay at Tilden House again if we were to take another trip, he said "Sure, I had a good time here. The staff were very nice and make you feel comfortable." but when asked about traditional memory care he says "It was like being in prison." If you have a loved one struggling in a traditional facility, do yourself a favor and check out Tilden. It's the next best thing to home care for your loved ones."

"I looked at one of the suites in Sunrise at Mount Vernon which was very nice. The place was very nice. They do art stuff, walks, music, entertainment come in and play familiar songs that people would know, bake cakes and bread, games, and puzzles. It's just a sundry of things that they do in a month. They have church service for various denominations every Sunday. They try very hard to work with your loved one and they seem to understand. The place is also very clean."

"We toured The Virginian. What I like best is that it's a very upscale place. It doesn't feel like it's just for old people, it feels very lovely in general, as a nice, welcoming place. The staff was very good. I felt elegance when I stepped inside the community. The rooms are very satisfactory. The dining area looks very nice, and I think the variety was nice."

"Sunrise of Fairfax was a big facility, but it seems like they had it planned out for residents who get tired of walking a long way, so they had sitting spaces at regular intervals along the hallways so that elderly residents with mobility issues could pause along the way. It wasn't especially updated. They still had carpeted floorings and the hallways weren't especially spacious. All the people that I met were friendly. The residents that we ran into seemed happy. The dining area was nice and spacious and they had a little separate seating area from the main dining area and there were residents there sitting and just socializing. They also had a library with lots of different types of books and a computer for the residents to use. They were completely full and did not have a room they could show us."

"My mother is at Sunrise At Bluemont Park. On the campus, there are three different buildings, and there are independent living and assisted living. My mother is in the building that’s only assisted living, and there’s memory unit on the third floor. The facility is very nice. My mother is getting very good care there. They have PT and OT there. They have a lot of activities. They have trips all the time to different places, many of which are at no extra cost. Every afternoon around 2, they have some activity, and they always serve snacks. The residents are kept busy doing things. They don’t like them to sit in their rooms, but if they want to sit in their rooms, they can. "

"I was disappointed with Sunrise of Falls Church because while I was looking around a lot of the residents that I saw were just sitting in their wheelchairs doing nothing. I was there for about an hour and a half, but they didn’t seem to be interacting with each other people. The staff were somewhat discombobulated. They seem to be not knowing what exactly they are supposed to do with me. I saw their rooms. It seemed a little bit older, but they are very nice. The place is also clean. I just think they need to work on how the staff interacts with the residents more. "
