Tiverton is a town in Newport County, located on the shores of Mount Hope Bay on the Massachusetts Border. Seniors make up 24% of its 16,359 residents, a significantly higher number than the U.S. average of 16.5%. Many seniors may be drawn to Tiverton because of its below-average health care costs, outstanding air quality, very low levels of violent crime and quick access to several hospitals and medical centers. The town boasts a serene environment while also being only half an hour from Providence.

Tiverton’s assisted living fees tend to be around $4,950 per month, which is average for Rhode Island. In most assisted living facilities, seniors struggling with daily tasks, such as housekeeping, can get freshly prepared meals three times a day, comfortable accommodations cleaned and maintained by trained staff and the opportunity to participate in community-organized activities. Residents are free to use their time as they wish, which makes assisted living an attractive option for seniors who only require limited support.

This guide considers the pros and cons of living in Tiverton and the costs for various types of senior care in the region. It also lists several senior-friendly resources.

  • According to Sperling’s Best Places, Tiverton’s average cost of living index is 111.2, which is slightly above the state average of 110.6 and the national average of 100. New England states are typically more expensive than most, so the higher cost of living isn’t a surprise; plus, many of the indices, such as housing costs, aren’t relevant to seniors in assisted living. What may please seniors is Tiverton’s health cost index of 84.7, which is significantly lower than the national average.
  • Tiverton’s crime rates are lower than the state and national averages, sometimes by great margins. For example, the chances of being a victim of property crime in the town is 1 in 87, compared to 1 in 65 for the rest of Rhode Island. Violent crime is even less of a problem, with the chances being 1 in 1,424 compared to the state average of 1 in 452. Also, the Eagleville and Bliss Corners neighborhoods share a reputation for being safer than the town center and North Tiverton.
  • Tiverton doesn’t have a hospital of its own, although the Lifespan Physician Group, Inc. provides primary care services in the town. However, less than 15 minutes north in Fall River, there are several hospitals providing a wide range of care services. Additionally, many of Rhode Island’s finest hospitals are in Providence, which is 30 minutes northwest.
  • Although Tiverton’s climate can’t compete with warmer locations in southern states, it is senior-friendly for much of the year. Annual summer temperatures hover around a very pleasant 81 degrees, and the town is only four days short of the national average of 205 sunny days. Winters can be cold, averaging 22 degrees in January, and snowfall is typically 32 inches annually, which is a little above average.
  • Water quality in Tiverton scores 40/100, which is below the national average of 55. However, with a score of 84, the air quality is high compared to the national average of 58.
