Benchmark Senior Living at Plymouth Crossings is reasonably priced and small. There’s 24-hours care there if my mom gets up at night and goes to the bathroom and stuff like that. Some of the others were just too big and they weren’t going around to check on everybody. She’s in assisted living. They help her with medications, bathing, and if she needs to get up they’ll come and assist her to the bathroom. We like that she lives downstairs and is just down the hall. It’s not like a huge building where she has to walk a lot. They cater to her and they have a lot of activities. The staff is also excellent.
Her room is nice though it’s not the biggest thing. She has a roommate on the other side and they share a kitchenette and a bathroom. She has her own separate room and they share a kitchen area with tables and chairs and a little refrigerator.
They have music every Friday or Thursday night. They have a cocktail hour too, I just don’t know if they’re real cocktails or that’s maybe wine. The location is easy to get to from the highway. They have transportation back and forth to doctor’s appointments. They have a little minivan for any doctor’s appointment that would require her to leave the facility. They have an in-house doctor too and they do all her medication twice a day.
She says the food is really good. They have snacks and coffee that you can get whenever you want. Now because of COVID, you can go visit, but you have to stay contained. She goes to the dining area, but she can’t have her husband go in there. They serve them lunch, it’s a big meal, at the table. Whoever walks in, they take a temperature.
This place is a lot cheaper than a lot of the other ones.

All American Assisted Living at Wareham was very nice. I was impressed with the facility and they have in-house doctors and nurses that are there in the facility on certain days during the week and on-call during the weekends and holidays.
We didn’t experience any meals there, but they had a nice dining hall. They also had another small dining area where you could just come and go and eat snacks. There were just certain times that you could go down for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and if you have any kind of a memory problem, they would have people go up and get you to bring you downstairs.
We only met the salesperson there, but everyone that was walking around looked very helpful. We didn’t see a lot of interaction other than residents walking up and down the hallway and they were calling the residents by their first and last names. It was like they knew who was walking around, so that was pretty good. The staff during the tour was very knowledgeable. The facility was very clean. There wasn’t any clutter. It was very nicely decorated. It was like a home away from home.

We moved my dad into Sunrise of Plymouth Beach. It was close to home. When I toured the facility, it is just absolutely beautiful, and I just felt like it was going to be a perfect fit for him. And within one week, he is just thriving and enjoying himself, and it’s been perfect. They have done everything that they said they were going to do, and they are so welcoming. It has just been a very easy transition for him, which is great. The staff is wonderful.
My dad is very happy with the food. They have different kinds of activities throughout the day. They seem to have everything. It’s only been a week, but so far, so good. It’s right across the street from the beach. He has an ocean view from his bedroom, which is beautiful. It’s nice. It’s 10 minutes from my house, and his granddaughter is five minutes away and it’s just nice and convenient for all of us to be able to see him almost every day.

Laurelwood at The Pinehills is a new facility, but the layout and the size of the one-bedroom are much too small, so we didn’t pursue that. We walked away from them because the rooms are super teeny, we’re talking maybe 500 square feet, and the bathrooms aren’t attached in the bedroom. So she would have to walk out of her room in assisted living into the living room and into the bathroom, and I don’t want that. They wake up a lot in the middle of the night and that’s just too far. I want the bathroom in close proximity to the bedroom. That was the deal breaker right there, plus the rooms were too small. I don’t even know how you could put a couch in there. The facilities that they offer are very comparable to the other places we’ve looked at, so there’s nothing special about them.

Wingate had everything as far as rehab, memory care, nursing home. The rooms are gorgeous over looking the lake and garden. She went from rehab to assisted living. She was not easy to deal with but the staff was able to win her over. My moms health declined quickly. The staff went above and beyond to make my mom and our family comfortable. If I ever had any concerns they always addressed it and never dismissed it. My mom passed in March 2022. I have zero regrets and would recommend Wingate Inn to any of my friends looking for elder care.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Plymouth County
Seniors in Plymouth County who require assistance with the cost of services at an ALR are fortunate to have a number of options at their disposal. As part of the Massachusetts Medicaid State Plan, seniors can receive financial aid through the Group Adult Foster Care program and Money Follows the Person (MFP) waiver program. Low-income seniors are also eligible to apply for an optional state supplement (OSS) to be added to their Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment.
While many families use their own funds or personal assets to pay for assisted living, there are plenty of additional options to cover these costs. Some additional ways to finance assisted living costs include:
As the local Area Agency on Aging, this state body offers support and advocacy to seniors throughout Plymouth and surrounding counties. A long-term care ombudsman program helps residents of care homes resolve concerns about their treatment, and the Aging Service Access Point serves as a central collection of housing, medical and community resources.
Adults over 60 can get help with health insurance applications or access other social services such as legal aid and long-term housing counseling at this senior center. A wellness program offers low-impact exercise and dance classes and courses on nutrition and healthy aging. Members also have access to blood pressure and foot care clinics. Seniors can participate in language, computer and crafting classes or enjoy live entertainment and communal luncheons.
Operated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, this organization supports service members with financial assistance for housing, health care and education. This body also acts as an access point for pensions, life insurance and disability benefits. Veterans can get individual and group mental health care as well as pharmaceutical and laboratory services through the VA medical system.
This nonprofit offers a wide range of educational services, which include classes on nutrition, chronic disease management and financial planning. Here, seniors can also get health insurance and housing options counseling as well as information on scams and consumer rights. An emergency assistance program can provide financial aid for rent, bills and sudden expenses.
Elderly and disabled adults can access a free transportation program that offers rides to medical appointments, errands and social engagements. This nonprofit body also offers case management services, emergency financial assistance programs and free help with filing taxes. The Consumer Aid Program offers information and resources designed to protect vulnerable populations from fraud and exploitation.
