The Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey reports that nationally, seniors pay approximately $4,300 per month for assisted living, but care costs range drastically throughout the country based on factors such as local living costs and licensing requirements. Seniors in Massachusetts pay some of the highest costs in the United States, with rates coming in at $6,085 per month, on average. In Barnstable County, which has comparable senior care fees with its largest city, Barnstable Town, seniors pay even more, with average monthly fees of $6,338.

The average assisted living rate in Barnstable County exceeds the state median by about 4% at $6,338, making it the most expensive area in Massachusetts for this type of care. Worcester is the most cost-effective option in the state, with monthly rates averaging $5,488. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Barnstable County

Seniors in Barnstable County who require assistance with the cost of services at an ALR are fortunate to have a number of options at their disposal. As part of the Massachusetts Medicaid State Plan, seniors can receive financial aid through the Group Adult Foster Care program and Money Follows the Person (MFP) waiver program. As the designated Area Agency on Aging, it arranges free and low-cost services, including long-term care screening, which provides the required screening for those seeking Medicaid-reimbursed services in assisted living facilities. It provides options counseling, a short-term decision support process that guides seniors in evaluating their long-term care needs, as well as a long-term care ombudsman program that advocates on behalf of those in assisted living.
Barnstable Adult Community Center(508) 862-4750The Barnstable Adult Community Center is located in the heart of Barnstable County and offers an engaging environment that promotes social connections and recreational opportunities. Among its activities are art classes, technology support, social clubs, travel talks and cooking classes, as well as special events, workshops and intergenerational activities. Its robust wellness program includes cooking demonstrations, health talks and fitness activities to support health aging, as well as ask-a-nurse sessions, blood pressure screenings and foot care clinics. The center also provides health insurance counseling, a telephone reassurance program and a community resource library to help older adults connect with local services and supports.
Cape Cod Vet Center(508) 778-0124The Cape Cod Vet Center is centrally located in Hyannis and provides a wide array of services for qualifying veterans and their dependents. At this location, veterans can get help with applying for benefits that may help cover assisted living expenses, including veterans’ home placement, the Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefit and the VA pension. The center is open on weekdays during normal business hours, and services are provided by appointment only. In some cases, appointments may be available outside of normal operating hours to accommodate a senior’s schedule.
South Coastal Counties Legal Services, Inc.(508) 775-7020South Coastal Counties Legal Services, Inc., is a local nonprofit agency that provides free legal services to seniors aged 60 and over. At the Hyannis office, seniors can obtain assistance with applying for federal benefits such as Medicare and Social Security, as well as help with resolving issues related to healthcare, housing or finances.
SHINE(800) 243-4636SHINE is the statewide senior health insurance information program. This federally funded program provides seniors with free assistance and guidance with insurance-related issues, helping them make educated decisions regarding their long-term care and financial planning. Volunteer counselors are trained to answer questions and help seniors compare health insurance and prescription drug plans, sort their medical bills and identify and resolve billing errors. Counselors can also assist income-qualifying seniors with finding programs that can help them cover insurance and healthcare costs.
