Macedonia is a small city situated in Ohio’s northeast. It’s home to around 12,000 people, and 19% of residents are aged 65 and above. The city’s seniors benefit from Macedonia’s location midway between Cleveland and Akron, which gives them access to great healthcare and amenities while still living in a small community. Macedonia also has comfortable summer weather and a low cost of living.
Seniors in Macedonia who need some help with daily tasks may wish to consider moving to an assisted living community. These facilities are designed to assist older adults who aren’t able to live independently by providing help with activities such as personal care, transportation and meals. Assisted living doesn’t offer the high level of medical care found at nursing homes. In Macedonia, the average cost of care in an assisted living facility is $4,875 per month, which is higher than the Ohio average of $4,350.
This guide provides an overview of assisted living in Macedonia, including information about the average monthly costs, benefits and drawbacks of life in the city and resources available to help Macedonia’s seniors.

My father was a resident at Independence Village. The process of moving in and familiarization was handled very professionally and efficiently. The entire staff, from the Executive Director down to the handyman, were friendly, caring and responsive to the needs of my father and other members of my family. In particular, the facility was very flexible in terms of meeting my father’s care needs. The food was excellent and the facility was always sparkling. Having worked in healthcare myself, I was very familiar with the wide range of quality in various facilities; I would rate Independence Village near the very top.

My Dad moved to assisted living in Maplewood at Twinsburg about a month ago. He had been very strongly against living in any facility, but due to his dementia, there was no other option for him. Initially, he was loudly vocal about not wanting to stay, but within 4 days at Maplewood he made a complete turn. He enjoys all the activities and fully participates in the physical exercises and is a huge contributor to the group discussions. He always tells me that we can’t go back to his room because he might miss an activity that is ready to start. All the staff, especially Morgan, knew exactly what to say to him to calm him and get him to open up to participating. Dad has told me that none of the staff is "negative" – and that is a huge compliment. I am glad that he is in such a warmly welcoming facility that has multiple opportunities for him to actually thrive (not just live) physically and mentally. And I can’t neglect mentioning the well maintained and beautiful building and grounds (thanks to Steve), super clean rooms (thanks to Tracie), exquisite dining options (thanks to Chef Ty), multiple interesting excursions (thanks to Allie), and loving personal care (thanks to Marva and the nurses). These people make Dad’s stay at Maplewood a pleasure – and he no longer wants to leave!

My sister has moved into Light of Hearts Villa. It’s a faith-based community. It was formed by the Sisters of Charity, which appealed to my sister. They’re into Bible study and their whole attitude is not all about money, so that appealed to us very much. Right now, we’re trying out assisted living because she fluctuates between doing good and then not really realizing what day it is or whatever, like her recall of facts, numbers, and things. They feel that they would like to start her there and see how it goes, and if need be, they could always move her over to memory care. Right now, they’re evaluating her situation.
I haven’t tried their meals. I have to give them a heads up when I’m coming for either lunch or dinner, so you have to put a request in. But my sister is very happy with their food because she’s there for every meal three times a day and no complaints, and she is a food fussy. Her room is like a suite. There’s an entranceway, a pantry so she can store things, a private bath for the shower, and there’s room for her queen-sized bed, a nightstand, a recliner, two dressers, and a rocking chair. It’s quite roomy.
They play Jeopardy and they play bingo. Yesterday, a husband and a wife came and sang and played instruments and so forth. I think it was like songs from the 1940s and 1950s, which they all enjoyed. My sister is doing much better walking so that she can get around with her walker. She can go visit some of her friends. They’re not all in the same area, but they can go by elevator up or down. She’s doing much better mingling with people.

She said she felt like a queen. They were great to her. They took care of her. They were wonderful with her and so caring. It’s a small place. They had her sitting at the table eating which she wasn’t doing at another community. She had a private room and they made sure that she bathed and got up to have dinner with the other residents. It was such a difference from how she was. She perked up as soon as she got there. One lady painted her nails. They brought a hairdresser in for her. They actually came to her funeral and made some vegetable trays.

The food comes with the rent so you don’t have to pay extra for meals, so I give them credit on that as well. And it’s affordable for elderly citizens who are on a fixed income and don’t have extra money. This one is elderly-friendly. There’s no trouble trying to connect with the staff. We haven’t tried the food but they showed us the meals. At the time that I applied, there was one room available that would have been on the second floor. They were accommodating of the fact that I wanted to make it difficult for him to leave, so they were going to put him on the second floor.

Management at this facility has already been cited by the state for poor communication. They are slow to return messages and seldom seen in the halls of the facility. At least that’s my experience, and I visited three times a week.
This facility does accept Medicaid residents, which is why our loved one ended up here. It is not a great choice for private-pay.
Food is so-so at best and the facility does not exhibit a high level of cleanliness. Laundry service is also inconsistent and often loses items.

The man who was at The Woods at Solon Pointe wasn’t the admissions man, but he still took us on the tour. Unfortunately, he didn’t have all the information we needed. He was very nice, but we weren’t all that impressed. The place was clean and it looked nice. As far as activities, we hardly saw anybody there, and the man said most of the residents stay in their rooms. The place was quiet. The building looked clean and the room he showed us was very nice. The dining area was nice and big.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Macedonia
Assisted living facilities in Macedonia are licensed and overseen by the Bureau of Regulatory Operations, a division of the Ohio Department of Health. The Bureau conducts unannounced inspections every 9-15 months to ensure facilities are complying with the state’s assisted living rules and regulations.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Macedonia
- Seniors in Macedonia don’t need to pay state income tax on any Social Security retirement benefits. Although income from pensions and retirement accounts is taxed, there are credits available to taxpayers over 65, which can help seniors balance their budgets. Sales taxes are high in the state, but exemptions for most groceries, prescription drugs and newspapers help limit their impact on seniors.
- While the overall cost of living in Macedonia is high when compared to the state average, it’s still almost 8% lower than the national average. Costs for healthcare and transportation are significantly lower than the U.S. averages, which can help seniors save money for other retirement expenses.
- Summit County is a member of the AARP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. This means the county, including Macedonia, is actively working towards becoming a great place to live for people of all ages.
- The overall crime rate in Macedonia is 22 crimes per 1,000 residents. Although the property crime rate is slightly higher than the Ohio average, violent crimes in the city are significantly lower, at only 0.25 crimes per 1,000 residents.
- Summit County received passing grades for both ozone and particle pollution from the State of the Air report. This may help the health of seniors in Macedonia who live with lung conditions.
- Summers are considered very comfortable in Macedonia, with highs in July of around 82 degrees. In January the low temperature averages 20, and the city experiences around 71 inches of snow each year, which may appeal to seniors who enjoy white winters.
