Although its primary purpose is to support community seniors, several of its services are equally useful to seniors in residential care facilities. These include counseling for beneficiaries of Medicare and Medicaid and those who need more information about the programs before signing up. The organization can also connect seniors to paralegals and attorneys who provide pro bono services to older community members.
Long-Term Care Ombudsman(877) 582-6995Seniors unhappy with the quality of their care or concerned about being transferred or discharged can contact the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, which investigates complaints free of charge. The ombudsman advocates for seniors during negotiations with the care provider and can keep the source of the complaint private if the senior wishes. The program also holds copies of inspection reports, which it can release to seniors making long-term care plans.
Office of Veterans' Services(855) 767-8387Passaic County's Office of Veterans' Service helps vets, their spouses and dependents identify and apply for local, state and federal benefits, including some that may help with residential care costs, such as VA Aid and Attendance. In addition to activities common to senior centers, such as games and leisure programs, the center also conducts an array of health and wellness and educational classes.
Community College Opportunity Grant(973) 684-8006Passaic County Community College offers grants to seniors to pay for tuition during the spring and fall semesters. To qualify, the senior must have an annual income not exceeding $65,000, live in Passaic County and enroll in a program with six or more credits.
